Justin Upton looks to return to form

If he's healthy then he should hit decently fine. His fielding on the other hand.... oh boy... -

Honestly, no. Definitely not from a pitcher who isn't playing every day. -

Contract Predictions from The Athletic // Jim Bowden

$36M AAV is a flipping joke. That's near Trout territory. No one is near Trout territory, not even Cole. -
You nailed this post @Second Base. Some analysts think Wheeler still has some developing to do and can become an ace. Having Callaway, his manager from last year, could help draw Wheeler to the Angels as well. Maddon and Callaway will really help our young players develop. Free agent pitchers will see that Maddon is managing the Angels and that Callaway is the pitching coach which will be attractive. Not to mention that they can play in So-Cal weather, and oh yeah, Mike Trout.

Can we just build a new stadium behind the old one already? -
YOU Build the 2020 Angels // YOUR Offseason Plan

I've got payroll after guarantees, buyouts and arb guys at around $142.7M So i'll go off of that and assume your $200M budget opening. I'm going along the lines that Arte says "We're winning these next few year while Maddon is the coach and screw the budget/future". YES I KNOW IT"S A TERRIBLE IDEA. Just having fun with this. Gerrit Cole: 7yr/$224M backloaded, salary 2020 at $23M 2020 Payroll at: $165.7M Zack Wheeler: 5yr/$85M ($15M, $17M, $17M, $17M, $19M) 2020 Payroll: $180.7M Assuming Indians trade Lindor- Trade Simmons (-$15M) + Marsh + Suarez + Yan to Indians for Mike Clevinger (+$4.5M) 2020 Payroll: $170.2M Rendon: 7yr/$217M backloaded, salary 2020 at $28M 2020 Payroll: $198.2M Maldonado: 1yr. $2M. Then go for Realmuto next season 2020 Payroll: $200.2M Rotation: Cole, Clevinger, Ohtani, Wheeler, Heaney, Canning. Lineup: Fletcher (SS), Trout (CF), Rendon (3B), Ohtani (DH), Upton (LF), Pujols (1B), Goodwin (RF), Maldonado (C), LaStella (2B). When Adell come up: Fletcher (SS), Adell (RF), Trout (CF), Rendon (3B), Ohtani (DH), Upton (LF), Pujols (1B), Maldonado (C), LaStellla (2B). -

Construction takes about 1-3 years after approved. Could happen while the Angels are making a serious run. If the Angels have already considered it as an option then i'm sure they've reached out to people already. -

If/When the Angels explore building a new stadium in the lot I'd love to see the artists' renditions for the new design. Would also be cool to see what new features a 21st century ballpark would include. -

Agree with everything minus the 25,000-30,000 for seating. If Arte and Eppler built a freaking winner then the 44,000+ seats would be filled. Period. -
I fully understand, but i'm just asking if he retired then he's not guaranteed the rest of $ correct?
-
It depends what prospects would be attached to giving away Cozart and his contract. If he can't return and he decides to retire then I assume his contract is void right? Angels save the $12.76M?

I think Arte would lean towards renovating the stadium since he put down $3M in video board updates. But damn I would love for them to build a new one. We have the 4th oldest stadium and it's not iconic like Fenway or Wrigley. Plus, a new stadium that is modernized with technology would be incredible. Would be awesome for Arte to work his business magic and surround Trout with the best players and the nicest field. And get rid of those boring uniforms. -
You guys really think Strasburg is worth $25M/yr? He's a boras client so he'll easily push $28M-$31M/ yr If we're saying he's worth $25M then why not do this?: Payroll currently: $141.7M; open to $190M. Sign Cole: 7yr $217M ($26M in first year) Sign Strasburg: 5yr $125M ($23M in first year) Payroll: $190.7M Once Simmons and Cozart come off books in 2021 then add another bat.

“We are 100% focused on Anaheim,” Angels spokeswoman Marie Garvey said. “Long Beach is on the back burner.” https://www.latimes.com/sports/angels/story/2019-10-29/how-anaheim-might-help-pay-for-angels-stadium-development Seems like the preference for the Angels is to remain in Anaheim. Which leaves two options for them... Build a new stadium or update the new one. I wouldn't mind them building a new one on the lot. How would you guys feel about a new stadium on the property?
-
Agreed. Overall, I don't want the Angels trading away someone like Marsh this offseason. Adding Cole/Wheeler likely gets us in the WC game (assuming no injuries to anyone). Other than that, I don't think 2020 is the year to go all in. Realistically I think the window for the Angels to seriously contend starts in 2021. That's also when contracts start to come off the books so the Angels can direct that money to fill holes that depth can't fill. If Upton has more injuries and more decline then the Angels might need Marsh as a strong 4th outfield option. Eppler has money to spend and he should obviously start with only that.
-
Unless the Angels look to add a lower tier arm as a third option for FA or trade for less. I doubt they wanna go back to situation like Cahill/Harvey. Specially if Eppler is on his like year of contract.
-
1yr deal for an age 36 season could seem decent. maybe $10M-12M range? And yes, that's the risk you'll run into with any trade for the Angels.

Option A: budget opened to ($190M) Currently at $148M Release Bour, Tropeano, Garcia: Saves $6.3M Cole: $26M for first year (backloaded) Wheeler: $15M for first year (backloaded) Hamels: $8.5M Total payroll: $191.2M ------------------------------------- Option B: budget opened to ($190M) Currently at $148M Release Bour, Tropeano, Garcia: Saves $6.3M Trade Bedrosian for prospect: saves $2.8M Cole: $28M (backloaded) Wheeler: $18M (slightly backloaded) Trade for Clevinger: adds $4.5M Total payroll: $189.4M I've got a total of 10 options written up...

Good thing you brought it up cuz here's what i've been thinking: Budget opened to ($190M) Currently at $148M Release Bour, Tropeano, Garcia: Saves $6.3M Cole 7yr $217M: ($29, $32, $32, $32, $31, $31, $30) Wheeler 4yr $80M: ($19M, $20M, $21M, $20M) Total payroll: $189.7M
