Vladdy Issues reacted to jsnpritchett in The Official 2023 MLB Amateur Draft Thread
Admittedly, I don't know much about either one, but Wimmer wasn't ranked on pre-draft boards that I saw, and Kent was ranked as the equivalent to something around the 4th round. That's kinda what I don't really get: it's not like these two guys had major heat on them to begin with, so why go out of your way to go over slot on them?

Right off the bat I made a bad statement by only mentioning draft spending when I also meant pick quality. With regards to what you wrote, thank you... yeah I agree and we all know that.
My biggest issue is with the picks, we made a lot of picks in rounds 1-10 that don't seem like they're going to be getting over slot value for the draft round they were picked at (to I guess have more money to spend in rounds 11 - 20 for HIGHER UPSIDE picks like Caden Dana or a Mason Albright)...
... and yet we didn't seem to pick HIGHER UPSIDE guys like a Dana or Albright in the later rounds is my issue.

Twins? I like it. Could be a sneaky way to have a 27th roster spot, and nobody catches it.

from a completely non-biased uninformed perspective...seems like an underwhelming draft. Those ranking numbers have alot of - next to them. Heres to hoping their scouting department and minasian are great at their jobs. Go halos!

Interesting on Wimmer. Wonder what they're seeing that others apparently don't?

I will forever refer to him as the 42 year old HS senior.

Ok, so after the McCroskey pick in the 20th round, I'm officially confused. Guess we'll see how it plays out over the next couple weeks with the bonuses these guys get. I just don't see anyone who looks to be significantly over slot. They could still sign undrafted guys, too. Max bonus for them without penalty is $125K. Anything over that counts against the bonus pool.

of all the years to be conservative with their draft spending than the year of the deepest draft #AngelWay

Gotta say I’m really underwhelmed by this draft.
Almost feels like they drafted to restock the AA team after they made a plan to buy at the deadline, and then the last 10 games fucked that idea and they had no time to pivot.

Gene Autry sold the team to Disney that changed the name from California Angels to Anaheim Angels. So Mickey Mouse is the rat in all of this.

Vladdy Issues reacted to Capital_Dave in Outside the Box Plan: Sign Ippei: 10 years/ $10 million
The two are obviously very tight.
I assume Ippei is an employee of the organization, not an employee of Ohtani personally. So my plan is: lock Ippei up with a 10 year/ $10 million personal services contract. Ippei is set for life and Ohtani has a major incentive to re-sign with us.
And if Ohtani still goes elsewhere, no biggie, doesn't count against the salary cap... we recruit heavily in NPB and become a pipeline for Japanese talent. There's already a ton of Angels gear being worn by Japanese baseball fans. Let's put it to use!

That really comes down to team direction. The Angels seem unwilling to enter a rebuild and as a result they seem to be stuck in this cycle of mediocrity. They keep drafting high floor collegiate players because they're fast to the majors in hopes of competing but it isn't working. You don't get elite players to build around at the collegiate level unless you're picking 1-1, and without entering a rebuild phase, you aren't picking 1-1.
*Note - I believe Zach Neto is the exception here, not the rule. While not elite, I think the Angels found themselves a legitimate 4-5 win SS from the college ranks in the middle of the first round with Neto.
Typically, the only way to get elite players 11th overall is to go the riskier prep route.
Schanuel is not a bad pick, but I believe even outside of a supercharged draft like this year, he's still someone that goes around 11th overall in the first round. SSI the Angels didn't capitalize.
I think that if the Angels changed their organizational direction and were willing to rebuild, then picking someone along the lines of Aiden Miller or Bryce Eldridge could've worked.
But as it stands, with their current philosophy, Schanuel is the right pick.
