Not true if he cannot pitch does not mean he can't be an OF. They are totally different, you do not throw splitter or curve balls from OF, those are pitches putting stress on arm.
I agree and think the idea of Ohtani getting some RF time is absolutely worth entertaining. He has the arm strength and athleticism of what could be solid to maybe even gold glove defense. If he continues to heavily struggle as a pitcher, transitioning to our new all star right fielder is a damn good second option.
I believe someone mentioned earlier that Maddon confirmed Ohtani will be getting some RF work. I wouldn't be surprised if he's been working on his fly ball routes right now during this offseason to prepare, Ohtani is a resilient and hard worker after all and also seems the type to do whatever it takes to help the Angels win.

I would love to bring on Dahl on a cheap contract. Lots of upside and would be a great platoon with Ward and Upton in the corner OF spots. Gives us a solid means of production until Adell/Marsh are ready.

I think we need to have 5 solid SP's and keep Ohtani as a wild card for the 6th spot. We've relied on Ohtani to be the #1 guy last two years and have been burned due to injury.
1. Free Agent SP
2. Bundy
3. Heaney
4. Canning
5. Barria or Free Agent SP2
6. Ohtani
I still think Ohtani can be and will be the ace he is capable of, but it's best to err on the side of caution when building our rotation to avoid a repeat of the last decade of relying on injury prone pitchers.

Would love to see a trade involving Lindor and one of their pitchers like Plesac or McKenzie. Maybe something along the lines of:
Angels get: Lindor (+21mil), Plesac
Indians get: Adell, Suarez, JerJackson, (possibly additional prospects? I'm eye balling it here)
Rotation:
1. Plesac 2. Bundy 3. Heaney 4. Canning 5. Taj Walker (2yr/16mil) 6. Ohtani
Lineup:
1. Fletcher 2B 2. Lindor SS 3. Trout CF 4. Rendon 3B 5. Walsh 1B 6. Ohtani DH 7. Upton LF (Marsh when ready) 8. Ward RF 9. Stassi C
Pen:
Hand (2yr/14mil), Mayers, Barria, Pena, Buttrey, Middleton, Sandoval
I think this team wins the division. Ideally, we could extend Lindor as well.

Woodn't that be nice

I just hope we don't end up being one of those teams that take a huge cut in payroll. Now is the perfect time to take advantage of the market and get some good deals.

Cant wait for the angels to sign him so he can get his 2nd tommy john surgery.
But seriously i really hope this isn't true, Didi is basically another Upton with his extreme cold/hot streaks and will cost money we need for SP's.
I'm fine with taking a chance on Rengifo/Barreto/Thaiss/Jones at 2B, all of whom have upside. Even a low risk/high reward signing of Ha-Seong Kim would be a more welcomed move.
Get us Bauer or a combo of Stroman/Gausman/Walker plus some pen pieces to supplement Pena and Mayers.

Great writeup, @Jeff Fletcher.
I wonder if the Angels should explore a trade sending Simmons to a team that needs a SS before the deadline. Fletcher while not as wizard like as Simba at SS is pretty damn close iMO from what I've seen with my own eyes.
The difference is the bat, Simba takes some of the most ugly swings and approaches at the plate most of the time.
What kind of return do you think we could realistically get from trading Simmons?

Tomorrow. Maddon says Ohtani will DH every day and Adell only supposed to miss this one game.

This greatly increases the Angels playoff chances. For reference, if there was a 16-team playoff for 2019, only 7 of the 8 teams in the AL would have had a winning percent over .500. The 8th playoff team would have been the Rangers at 78-84 (.481).
Most projections have Angels in the ballpark of 30-30 this year, so our first playoff appearance since 2014 is now very likely

Injury prone player gets injured

I think you're seriously underestimating the talent of Alvarez, Bregman, Correa, and Altuve. That's an absolutely solid core group of guys. Even Brantley and Guirrel are fantastic support pieces.
The only questionable part of their team is if their pitching will hold up. They lost Cole. Its only a matter of time until Grienke and Verlander pitch their age. McCullers is a wild card coming of injury. and Whitley, James, and Urquidy are all prospects that still have a lot to prove. Their pen has Pressly and Osuna but not much else.
They will still finish over .500 unless by some miracle everything goes wrong.

Good article about Canning's start last night and some of his advanced stats. Canning looked like a top of the rotation guy.

Another high risk/high reward guy. Perfectly fits the bill of an Eppler pick

Right Field Options for the Angels

Ultimately, I think it's likely that Ohtani will be a good pitcher next year, albeit with a strict innings limit as well. His at bats will likely come almost exclusively come from the DH spot. But Maddon is a big fan of guys playing multiple positions, so I think at the very least we see Ohtani becoming available as a solid backup OF if we're in a pinch.
I know there are many who are skeptical about Ohtani as a pitcher now, but I think they have prematurely lost their faith in him. Last year was his first time back since his TJ and thanks to COVID, the circumstances for his return were far from ideal. I'm a big believer it was the lack of a full spring training that caused Ohtani's woes as well as his injury.
On the hitting spectrum, I think I point to the lack of a full spring training as well as the shortened season not allowing him a real chance to turn things around. The talent and skill are there still.
