I think signing someone like Verlander should actually make more sense for the Angels, specifically because he will likely get a short 1 or 2yr deal. I say "should" because it will largely depend on if the rumors of Perry's "zero limitations" are true or not and how much Arte will green light.

A 2/80 or 1/40 fits the Angels situation in that they're able to add an Ace, all while not having to commit long term and risk another albatross contact when the player regresses. Also makes sense with the sale situation, Verlander raises the value of the team from a marketing and talent viewpoint, while also allowing the long term flexability to remain intact for a new potential owner. Plus Kate Upton.

Kershaw would be another guy that makes sense if he had any desire to leave LAD, and I'm still particularly fond of the idea of the Angels adding Conforto on a short term deal too

Maybe we end up trading Ohtani and signing Kodai Senga and Masataka Yoshida to replace him

I remember reading somewhere around the trade deadline that the White Sox made an offer to the Angels for Ohtani. It was something along the lines of Ohtani for Cease, Kopech, Eloy Jimenez, and Andrew Vaughn. The Angels said no and asked for the Sox's top 2 or 3 prospects be included too so the trade never happened.

I wonder if the Angels could still get similar offers. Or if not, what an Ohtani package would look like now that he only has 1 year before free agency

Assuming good health and velo, I reckon they'd start him in AA where he has yet to find success. I could see him being a quick riser in such a scenario.

If Correa is willing to take another 3-4 year deal, then i absolutely think signing him would be the smart play. 

He's only 28, and is solid both defensively and offensively. A short term deal with high AAV seems the move most beneficial for the Angels, as they avoid a long term albatross contract. If he were to make the playoffs with the Angels, I'm sure the cheater narrative would fade away a bit more.

Walsh is terrible. Look at his numbers versus RHP's this year.

Spending a little at 1B would be the best way to upgrade the offense and would show that they are letting Perry try to win.

Josh Bell or even Trey Mancini is the way to go.

 

I think Mancini is the perfect fit.

He offers solid production at 1B and LF, our two biggest positional question marks. Mancini could platoon with Walsh at 1B and Adell in LF, which would give some stability and still allow enough playing time for Walsh/Adell to "break out". 

As for 2B/SS, while entering the season with just Rengifo/Soto/Fletcher isnt the worst thing in the world, I would still prefer they sign a middle infielder and push Fletcher to the UT role. Someone like Drury would be perfect.

Seems to imply to me that they're betting on Walsh to re-establish himself and that 1B isn't too high on their priority list

I feel like this is the same scenario we run into every season, relying on scrub-level players to hopefully click and over perform, which always leads to more mediocrity when it fails. In an ideal world with an ideal owner, there would be enough $$$ to sign a LF, SP, 1B, 2B/SS, RP, Closer.

With the owner situation we have entering the offseason, we'll likely be lucky to get 2 of those needs addressed. And of those needs, i would wager the Adell/Moniak OF situation as far more likely to bust than a Fletcher/Rengifo/Soto/Velazquez situation we have for 2B/SS.  So i'd prefer signing an OF, and leave Adell/Moniak to battle for the backup OF spot. Ideally we sign an OF like Mancini, Adell starts in AAA to work on his swing, with Moniak being the backup. I do think in such a situation, whoever is handed the backup OF spot, is probably the one the Angels view as more of a bust with the one in AAA still having some level of potential to not give up on.

Adell's a guy we've all drooled over before, and I think that same star-potential still exists. When he first came up, his glaring issues were his defense, his eye, and his hit tools. He's since improved his defense to a passable level, and the power, speed, arm, and athleticism are already there.

I feel the key to his success will be drastically improving either his eye/discipline/batting approach to allow a for higher OBP to raise his OPS to passable levels, or drastically shortening his swing to allow for higher and more consistent hard contact rates and a higher batting AVG. Unfortunately for him, those are the two hardest things to improve upon. But he'll forever be a scrub, barely even useful as a bench player, if one of the two areas do not improve.

I believe they both make league minimum. If Velasquez still has options next year, I don't see any reason to cut him. He has value as a bench player, although he has to remain as a bench player/AAAA depth or his weaknesses become extra obvious

I do miss Big Brain Billy quite a bit, but I think if Perry was given an increased budget like Eppler was, I would have faith in him to elevate the Angels to a superteam like the dodgers or mets. 

My wet dream is the new owner comes in with a Cohen like mindset and raises the budget significantly. 

I think Barria's key to continued success will be his control and pure BAbip luck. His baseball savant has him well below average in almost every category, especially xBA, xSlg, and barrel%. He is above average in BB% and Hard hit %, which implies he's been good with his command. 

Barria reminds me of how Julio Teheran was on the Braves. Two guys who don't have very good stuff and poor advanced metrics, yet somehow continued to be useful. Hopefully Barria can continue to be effective in the bullpen, specifically in long relief. 

Whenever he starts to suck (ideally after his Angels career), he's a pretty easy cut.
