Not sure where Odorizzi ends up at this point, but his asking price must still be high.

14/340 with 4 years of team control comes out to ~30 million per free agent year.
.301/.374/.582, 39 hr, 27 stl, 150 wRC+, 6.5-7 war in his 143 career games.
Not bad, really

I don't think we can question Albert's commitment or work ethic. I do tend to believe that there's credence to the rumor that he's 2-3 years older than advertised, which would make his decline more age-appropriate, if still rather sharp for such a (formerly) great player. If you shift his career stat line up 2 or 3 years, it just makes more sense.
I think it was IP upthread who mentioned the defensive shift. That could play a part.
He absolutely is 2-3 years older. So then his prime is shifted, and the decline starts to look more natural.
The signing made sense from the business side more than the baseball side, and that was clear in the beginning. So the Pujols deal is fine by me.
On a separate note, Richards hurting his knee while covering first is the turning point in my head

I think the most we can say is that Arte likes making money more than winning. The two aren't mutually exclusive, obviously, but if he has to choose, he'll choose the money.
So yeah, he could have offered Bauer 3/$150M, Realmuto 7/$210M, Hendricks 4/$100M, traded Adell and Detmers for Gray, and Marsh, Rodriguez, Adams, Jackson, Paris, Kochanowicz, and Yan for Luis Castillo. And yes, the Angels would probably win the AL West. But....well, you do the math.
Frankly, winning the world series isn't the goal for most team owners. It's not like Arte is an exception here.

Can Bauer double as the pitching coach?

Fun fact: Cozart ended up being one of the highest paid players in MLB last year because he got released before the shutdown.
So he would have made less money if he were less bad. Interesting

Bulk of this board as we entered the offseason has followed this narrative
Finally we're getting an ace! Bauer, Snell, even Darvish or Musgrove. Lots of options!
We got Quintana......he's OK......he's better than what we've had
Now Cobb.....he's better than Teheran. He was good in 2013.
For me this exemplifies fans attempting to alter their expectations to accept front office failure.
Next wave of statements I expect is misplaced optimism of Ohtani becoming the ace we need.
For me FO has needed to acquire an ace and we've failed at that yet again. I'm not arguing with anyone.
I shared the same sentiments last year and heard similar responses from many trying to convince me how good Teheran was going to be.
Cobb was good pre injury. He's been terrible since. Same for Teheran and his shoulder.
This is disappointing

I'm not a billionaire. I don't see how 5 million is that big of a deal. Especially when you'll likely win a lot more ball games getting you more revenue. People here act like going over the tax will bankrupt him.
I have a savings and checking account.
But how many shares of GME

It's pretty perplexing. You'd figure the Angels had as much competition for Rendon than for Cole/Bauer. Is that incorrect? Are teams willing to pay a whole lot more for a top starter than a top position player?
The market is usually thin at the top, so it's hard to really come to a general conclusion. It depends on the player and team and circumstances.
But often a top pitcher is high impact on the margins, moreso than a top position player, so that could be part of it

I think this has been asked or mentioned before... but @Cosmo_Kramer why do you have a picture of George instead of Kramer?
Because I like that scene.

Odorizzi seems like the more likely target by Minasian, but he might be waiting for the Bauer domino to fall first
-
I think Torres is Minasian and the rest is Moreno. So we don't know if Moreno will overrule Minasian like he has with Dipoto/Eppler in the past, and nobody can confirm the story.
Bauer is still possible, but it would take Moreno to do it. And I always figured that would be the case anyway.

and I thought I would also mention that one of the reasons Billy might have gotten fired isn't that he failed on all the one year deals or that he failed to secure pitching, but that 23m dedicated to Upton in 2021 and the additional 28m allocated to him in 2022. Damn that would be a nice chunk of change to spend on someone else.
I still think a healthy Upton can contribute. His last 100 PA .289/.379/.602.
Can't count on it though

Angels fire Mickey Callaway, placed on MLB Ineligible List through 2022

The Mets guy admitted to it, so they let him go. The Mariners guy said it on leaked video, so they let him go. Callaway doesn't have anything public like that, so still waiting to complete the investigation.
