First, defensive metrics are the murkiest of all stats.  BB-Reference's version of WAR focuses on DRS, FGs on UZR they are pretty similar, but DRS throws in subjective analysis using stringers to determine the difficulty by employing Baseball Info's Solutions, "Good Fielding Plays/Defensive Misplays (GFP/DME) system", it does this to try to be more comprehensive but in doing so it can cause some double dipping which they then employ yet another methodology to try to factor that out.  It's there where the differences however slight make for "fuzzy" results and what many see as bWAR overrating a player's actual defensive production.

Offensively they grade around OPS+ whereas fWAR uses wRC+ which is built on wOBA and if I have to explain to you why that makes one stat better than the other then there are multiple discussions that need to be had before even starting on the differences in bWAR and fWAR.  wOBA is built around the proven reality that getting on base (not making an out) is the biggest factor to scoring runs while OPS is treating OBP and SLG equally.

fWAR had Moniak as a 1.5 player.  It seems pretty clear that the version properly adjusting for the importance of not making outs is giving you a better idea of how well Moniak performed.

Defensively it's back to the slight difference and added components.  DRS uses rPM (runs minus plus saved) to rate the player against the league average -- UZR uses RngR (range above runs average) to try to do the same thing -- both of these stats get their data from the same source (BIS), and RanR like rPM gives Moniak a positive score so it comes down to how much you really want to buy into subjective human analysis vs math.

I don't know of a single person who prefers bWAR to fWAR.

And yet we see so few do that.

Total number of OFers in all of MLB to post 2-3 WAR seasons among qualifiers

    2018 - 41,
    2019 - 36
    2021 - 32
    2022 - 30
    2023 - 34

Here are the actual names per year if you want to try to find the "plenty of guys" taken off the scrapheap who managed a 2-3 WAR season.

    2018 https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&month=0&ind=0&pos=of&team=0&pageitems=30&startdate=&enddate=&season1=2018&season=2018&pagenum=1

More importantly, here are all the Angels OFers to produce a 2.0 fWAR season since 2012 when Trout came up

    Trout (every year).
    Hunter (2012)
    Trumbo (2012)
    Calhoun (2014, 2015, 2016, 2019)
    Goodwin (2019)
    Upton (2016, 2017)
    Ward (2022)

12 seasons, 36 starting spots, another 1-2 back up spot, so anywhere from 36-60 spots and it's happened exactly once with Brian Goodwin.

I don't have any interest in discussing whether or not Yelich at 125 mil from age 33-37 (LOL), would be worth doing.  But let's not downplay just how valuable and yes RARE a legit 2 fWAR player is.  The Trout era Angels will likely be a case study on just how valuable and important a team full of 2 WAR players is .vs the eggs in one (or two) baskets approach the Angels have followed.

Sorry for the long post full of abbreviations and information very few of you likely have any interest in but out of respect for all parties involved I figured I'd do it this way than just say BULLSHIT! and drop some snark... (like always)

Thank you and may God bless the Angels during these winter meetings.

"Hallelujah, Holy Shit! -- Where's the Tylenol!"

Inside Pitch delivering some facts, I think as Angel fans we might be a little spoiled by Trout's excellence. 2fWAR doesn't seem very valuable but it turns out to be more rare than I thought.Great stuff, also nice quote from Clark W Griswold.

Wow! That's fantastic. I wonder what's the average from those situations. HBP? Walks?

I don't know about HBP but I read where it was 12 guys he walked with the bases loaded. He said he would unintentionally intentionally walk a guy to face a different hitter who he thought he could get out. The story also said that Palmer almost gave up a Grand Slam to Rico Carty but Al Bumbry went over the wall to bring it back. Palmer was a beast.

That's just devastating news.  Lou is easily one of my favorite posters.  I've also enjoyed his short, but to the point posts and his no nonsense attitude.  I don't pay much attention to who likes my posts, etc., but I always smile when I get a "like" from Lou.

I'm incredibly sorry to her this news and I've noticed his lack of participation of late.  I kept checking his profile and saw he was reacting to posts, but not really posting and I wondered.  I thought about reaching out, but didn't because I thought he'd pick up his activity any day now...

I will pray for Lou and for his family.

I've never met Lou, but I feel like I know him a little.  Just a little. I feel like I know enough to know he is a good guy.  I'm honestly very saddened by this news.

You could not have said it any better than that, I don't post a lot but it too used to give me a kick when he liked my post.Cancer is just a bitch and it touches everyone someway. This news just made this day worse than it was.

I deleted it earlier. I sincerely apologize. I had no way of knowing that.

I just thought you are being grumpy for no reason.

It's all good,I apologize as well. I just let things get out of hand. What's funny is you are one of my favorite posters, you put a lot of effort in and I appreciate it.Sorry for letting my emotions get the best of me.

Are you literally just arguing that they were separate trades? Like nothing else matters. Separate TRADES!!!!

They were separate trades. I agree. But I am telling you they are linked AND THATS WHY THEY ARE ALWAYS MENTIONED TOGETHER.

It's like I'm arguing with a brick wall.

Go make up some more shit

LMAO. You've got to be fucking kidding. No one will support you. It's nonsensical. I am not making shit up, I am saying what literally everyone else thinks, and you're being an asshole.

I don't need anyone to to support me ,the facts do that.

I was being called an idiot who makes things up and I got defensive.

I don't think the Moniak Syndergaard trade happens in a vacuum, ie Moniak and Marsh are always linked. I know they were two separate trades, but dont see a world where the Angels take on Moniak if they still had Marsh.

All this has nothing to do with what I said.

    Who cares?

Let's do a poll. And see if I am correct or you are.

Good job on the poll, you just make up some more shit. The poll should be was Moniak traded for Syndergaard, none of your word bullshit. I never said there was not a link, I only stated the FACT that he was traded for Syndegaard and not Marsh.

Hey, that's twice you've insulted me now, when we can just disagree. I'm asking you nicely to stop.

I have my opinion, and you have your incorrect one. I am sure any of the senior writers, or Jeff Fletcher or Taylor Blake Ward would agree with me, but you keep on keeping to your incorrect opinion.

To not think they are linked is to not examine the bigger picture. Moniak is not traded for Syndergaard in a vacuum, it just doesn't make sense. Moniak and Marsh are linked.

Everything in this post is wrong

I took that from Jeff Fletcher

No, I am in fact not that stupid. Let's ease up on the personal attacks. No need for that shit.

I know that technically they were traded for who you say, you are correct.

    --

I am saying that The Angels would not have acquired Moniak for Syndergaard had they not previously sent Marsh to the Phillies, nor would the Phillies have traded Moniak to the Angels if they had not previously acquired Marsh.

The Phillies needed a CF and had been disappointed with Moniak's availability, as he was frequently hurt with them. They got one, which left little playing time for Moniak. Then they acquired Syndergaard in a deal for their surplus CF.

The two are definitely linked. Sorry you don't feel that way.

How arrogant are you to think you  know how things went down.

I keep seeing that the Angels have a half game lead in the third wild card spot, in all articles, today, but really, they're tied with the Yankees for the 2nd wild card spot, and both teams have a half game lead.

The Angels have played more games than the the Yankees, and have one more win and one more loss. Had they won one of the four close games that they lost last week, they'd be up by a game over the Yankees (and 1.5 games up over the Astros and Blue Jays.)

Great another one of your made up "facts". The articles are all wrong and you are right? Now that is laughable, see at this time the Yankees hold the head to head tiebreaker, so they would be second and the Angels first.

  12. 1 minute ago, Hubs said:

They traded for three guys for two guys. In the span of 24 hours. From the same team. Treating them like different trades is laughable.

You can't be this stupid,go to Baseball Reference and see who he was traded for.I guess facts don't matter to you. You can make up any bullshit you want don't make it true.

  13. 3 minutes ago, Hubs said:

Within days, to the same team. Moniak And Marsh play the same position. If we had asked for Moniak back in the Marsh-O'Hoppe trade they would've done it.

You must have inside information or something because how in the hell would you know that. You can say whatever you want but the fact is Moniak was traded for Syndegaard, end of story.
