  1. He doesn't have much to gain from hustling. He's gonna end up at first or back in the dugout one way or another.
  2. one of our pitchers will contract flesh-eating bacteria in their pitching arm
  3. Aren't a good number of these guys the definition of "replacement?" What did you expect?
  4. pujols is gonna force 'em to rewrite the WAR algorithm, to account for taking the bat out of the player's hands ahead of you.
  5. If you really think the "odds are we'll have a decent rotation pretty quickly" then I don't think you've been paying attention.
  6. 2008 was the most disappointing to me. 100 wins, Teixeira rental, Hunter Vlad and GA all had great years, as did Figgins, Aybar, and Howie. 62 saves that year I think for KRod? Fuck the Red Sox.
  7. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/20082470/billy-beane-oakland-athletics-rebuilding-new-stadium-mind On a similar note, thought this was quite amusing. They haven't even picked out a location for a new stadium, let alone started the approval process or building it. They have to be at a minimum 5+ years out from actually playing in a new stadium... not to mention the Warriors or Raiders. Could be pretty grim couple years up in that toilet bowl.
  8. It's ok, he's a top prospect for full time fatherhood, his angry glare is already big league quality
  9. don't know the timing of everything, but wasn't madoff's fund "returning" 10%+ at that time? anyway, bonilla was smart, insisting on 8% of the principal per year until he was paid in full, 35 years later, as if he had put into a great investment himself.
  10. Between Wells, Hamilton, and Pujols, that's got to be almost half a billion, straight out of Artie's pocket, for basically fuck all. I'm still fuming about the $3k I blew on an extended warranty 5 years ago.
  11. Needs to go to the Chris Ianetta School of Drawing a Walk
  12. I thought we were gonna witness the fairy tale season -- family lifelong Angel's fans and season ticket holders, went to HS in OC, then he hit that game winning home run the first week of the season. Since then, yeah pretty fucking grim. He's a veteran with a a good glove so Scioscia will stick with him throughout the season, virtually guaranteed.
  13. yes, just the sight of that jersey stirs up a deep rage, can't really fault whoever punched him.
  14. missed this thread but jesus didn't realize his WAR was that bad. the hamilton contract was only 5 years, and it has been absolute torture watching that money slowly smolder away for fuck all in return, now we get to do it all over again. actually it's worse because Pujol's net contribution over the year will be less than just benching him (according to WAR at least, not saying we have better options). lucky for arte he is a star and does help put butts in the seats.
  15. espn's ideal "sports" weekend. a brawl in a baseball game and tiger gets a dui. too bad lavar ball didn't get involved in a high-speed police pursuit, they could've scored the trifecta.
  16. Didn't realize this, if true it makes me feel a whole lot better about the Teixeira rental. We had a great team that year, I'm still bitter he walked away.
  17. pin that one on the coach he was gassed 3 batters ago, wtf
  18. great article, thanks for posting. couldn't agree more, can't believe the game has lost the "fireman" role (KRod before he took over for Percival), and can't believe analytics hasn't shaken up bullpen use more already. i think street said it was a mentality thing, that closers were mentally prepared for the 9th inning and using them in other situations would upset their preparation, but that seems more a symptom than a cause. Love this quote: "If everybody in that [bleep]ing bullpen can’t save a three-run lead for one inning, they shouldn’t even be in the big leagues.”
  19. jesus he's the least aware player i've ever seen.
  20. This is the main problem to me, if you are serving up meatballs on the outside part of the plate then someone like Cano is going to take advantage. Shift falls apart if your pitching strategy isn't complimentary. Clearly the use of the shift across the league is driven by data, not by a hunch. That said, this article shows Cano is pretty successful against the shift: http://www.lookoutlanding.com/2016/11/11/13599868/how-robinson-cano-beat-the-shift
