One position player that came through the Angels development pipeline since 2003 has/had accumulated more than 15 WAR.
280 position players have accumulated 15 WAR or more in the last 21 years.
There have been 3 pitchers in that category.
173 pitchers have accumulated 15 WAR in the last 21 years.
Let's do some silly math for a second. 450 players and 30 teams or 15 players per team. So the halos are 11 short. At 15 wins a piece that's 165 wins below average over the last 21 seasons.
Obviously, there's probably a fair number of holes in that calc, but the raw numbers speak to the catastrophe that is supposed to be the lifeblood of every major league franchise.
To me, the discussion about how this franchise has been run the last two decades starts and ends with this. You don't start averaging 75 wins a season for almost a decade out of nowhere. It starts years in advance of that.

Just seems weird to give Arte credit for signing Weaver after he was drafted in the first round and Arte refused to meet his contract demands. This is how low we need to go to find things to give Arte credit for I guess. Arte playing chicken with Jered Weaver over a few million dollars is indicative of why he is such a shitty owner.

Unfortunately that is not the world Angels fans live in.

Imagine Aaron Hicks of all people, steps up and has a huge season leading the angels into contention.
I think we are due for something like that

Ok I did not realize Hicks was a black dude.
Now he has to make the team.

I think so. But won't be surprised if they don't.
The direction of the team is just beyond me at this point.

TroutField reacted to Inside Pitch in The Official Los Angeles Angels 2023-2024 Hot Stove Offseason Thread
It's a perception thing with Snell, his pitch counts get him into trouble. It's possible it's being overstated but the reality is his lack of innings was/is constantly being brought up.
And people can talk about how pitchers don't go as deep in games as they did in the past and how the game is evolving, I'd make that argument too. But the reality is the guys that make that sort of money tend to go deeper into games.
The one thing all teams do a better job of these days is gauging value. It's possible that if the average performance of all 5-6 inning pitcher improves then their salaries come down when compared to the guys that go 6+ for the same reason you brought up in your other post, scarcity.

I don't have any inside friends, but my suspicion is Arte has stepped in a few times. Pujols, Hamilton, Rendon, stopping Rengifo to dodgers trade, and refusing to trade Ohtani would be some examples.
I asked because your language suggested Arte signed and drafted everyone. It sounds like you were more commenting on what the angels did under the ownership of Arte which makes sense.

If the report was accurate, the Yankees offered Snell 6/150 in January.....what are the odds that Blake Snell makes 150 million before he retires? If the report was accurate, the Blue Jays offered Chapman 6/120 last year. Same question. Not Boras' best work for sure. He doesn't always read the market correctly.

He took one of the best run franchises in sports and ruined every single aspect of it from top to bottom.
Im not mad about Snell not being signed, I just can’t believe what this old f**k has done to my favorite sports franchise

Thats wrong.
he bought the franchise in 2002 from Disney who put Stoneman and Scioscia in charge and let the baseball people run the baseball club.
as soon as Arte started putting his hands all over the franchise and even more so player personnel decisions, and stopped listening to smart baseball people things went the wrong way.
things were fine for 7 years while the pristine farm system kept chugging along. 2010 on has been a cluster fuck. 13 years of a bad franchise vs 7 years of a good one that he took over.
I won’t derail the thread with this topic but wanted to make that point

I’ve became a little pessimistic about the overall outlook of the team. I was feeling a little better at the start of spring but the lack of offense has worried me. I’m not even sure signing Snell and losing the pick is worth it at this point.
roll with what you got and let the rebuild play out. Stephenson, Estevez, Drury, Ward, Sandoval, etc can all be dealt at the deadline if they are having solid seasons.
Let Schaunel, Neto, Rengifo, Moniak, Adell, O’hoppe etc take their lumps and build a good core.

It was the 02-03 offseason. It was voted that because it was put on a tee for him with Mike Scioscia, Bill Stoneman, a top farm system, and fresh off a World Series championship. Riding the coat tails for another 7 years before completely ruining everything is exactly what I’m saying.
he was the owner that let it all go to shit because he didn’t allocate resources to the farm.

If Snell hadn't thrown that sim game for teams he would have only been able to get $61.9 million.
