Santana, as exasperating to warch at times, is still far superior to Blanton. Ar least Santana has Major League stuff, Blanton would be a fifth starter in the Independent league.

If they fired Scioscia, which IMHO would be a bad decision, Dino Ebel is the likely candidate for the interim job. Butcher would likely be fired too.

There aren't any candidates I'd rather have than Scioscia, who is regarded as a very good manager.

Think about who the Dodgers have had since Lasorda retired. They had Walter Alston, Lasorda, then these guys.

Bill Russell (3), Glenn Hoffman (I), Davey Johnson (2), Jim Tracy (5), Grady Little (2) , Joe Torre (3), and now Mattingly (3).

In the same time frame the Angels had Marcel Latcheman (3), John McNamara (I), Joe Maddon (I), Terry Collins (3), Maddon again (I), then Scioscia (14).

Stability is underrated in Managers. Scioscia is the 23rd manager (by tenure) in Angels history. Given that 5 of the other 22 have had multiple stints, (Mauch, McNamara, Lachemann, Rodgers, Maddon), that means only 18 guys have held that job.

Best Managers in the game have been there for many, many, years. Taking Scioscia's tenure out of the equation, the other 17 have then covered 35 years. Which is just over two seasons per guy.

Seeing as a lot of these guys lasted less than a year or were interim managers, you really have eleven guys helming the club for more than two years.

Scioscia is in his 14th season.
    Rigney had 7 1/2 seasons.
    Mauch had 4 1/2 seasons.
Lefty Phillips had parts of three.
Dick Williams had parts of three.
    Fregosi had parts of three.
Doug Radar had parts of three
    Buck Rodgers had three.
Marcel Lachemann had parts of three
Terry Collins had parts of three.
    McNamara had two.

We're spoiled to think that there is someone better out there.

Looking around the majors, after Sciocia, the longest tenured guy is Gardenhire in Minnesota. Then in the AL, you have guys hired for 2006 in Joe Maddon and Jim Leyland. Then guys for 2007 in Ron Washington and for 2008 in Joe Girardi,

Everyone else has been replaced in the last three years.

In the NL, Charlie Manuel has been leading the Phillies since 05. Bruce Bochy and Bud Black since 07, and Dusty Baker for 08.

Everyone else has been replaced in the last three years.

Do you want to replace a manager every three seasons, as is the evidence for the trend in baseball?

How many guys have World Series rings in the group who has lasted more than three seasons?

Manuel, Bochy, Scioscia, and Girardi. That's it. The Tigers have been there and lost. Gardenhire never has been. Baker has been and lost.

If they aren't going to upgrade to a better manager, it's best if they just hope Scioscia pulls something out this year, or we'll end up in a manager search every three years.

    I don't want that.

The pitching sucks. I knew this going into the season, but hoped it wouldn't be so bad. Pitching is the problem. Once they figure out how to fix it then everything will be fine. Until then, expect a .333 winning percentage.

I think percy would do a fine job.  His credentials are greater than Butcher.

Butcher was also a relief pitcher for years on the bigs.

Percy has postseason experience plus 14 years in the bigs...  i'll take that over what we have...

Arte is one of the smartest and greatest owners in sports. He and the entire front office have spent the last 10 years trying to establish a culture of winning and restoring some tradition to a franchise that was nothing more than the red headed step child to the Doyers for most of their existance. I'll say this, I am reading and posting in this thread for a reason. But calling Arte out for giving Sosh a 10 year deal, ehhh not so fast...

Like I said, the FO is trying to establish a culture here. Who was the last manager to take this team to 6 playoffs in 8 seasons, (5 yrs out of the previous 7 when the contract was signed if I'm not mistaken) that included a WS Championship & 2 additional ALCS appearances? Like it or not, it was Scioscia. Giving him the 10 yr deal was almost a no brainer. We don't like it now because of the high expectations and lack of results. Shoot, I don't like it now either but given the current history at the point in time, I see nothing wron with the decsion - I actually almost applauded it.

The A's commited two errors, the Angels none. The difference in this game was Josh Hamilton being the black hole in the 4th spot of the batting order. Had he come through early in this game the Angels would have blown out the A's.

With that A's bullpen the first home run was the game ender. If you want to beat the A's you have to beat them before they get to the 7th inning, not play catch up.

I used to collect the Topps cards of all the Angels from 67-74 and stopped around the time I discovered girls.
When my son was around 8 we went back and scouted around for older cards and current ones to flesh out the team set collection from 61- to what was present time in the early nineties.
Over the years we completed it with all the variables and traded sets right up to the WS team.
Currently waiting on a grandson in order to move forward.

I'm looking forward to my brother (splint) posting in this thread. Being a fan was just an expectation growing up, I don't think we've ever had this conversation before. Our older brother, may he rest in peace, was a Dodger fan and was buried in a Dodger Jersey I bought him for Christmas earlier that year. I can't really put my finger on it but my guess is I was closer to Doug (splint) so I became an Angel fan. I'm sure it helped that we grew up in Anaheim.

1994 when I was 9 years old. Grew up listening to my dad talk about the '82 and '86 season and the heartbreak that followed. Even though the '95 season sucked hardcore and I was devastated, I can look back on it now and appreciate it a little since it is something every fan should experience with their team. The highs and lows. Especially since I wasn't alive in '82 and only a year and a half old in '86.

My first Little League team was the Angels and my favorite movie when I was a kid (besides the Great Mouse Detective) was Angels in the Outfield (I was adopted and had been in a foster home like the kids in the movie). That's when I started following the Angels, and even though I've only been a home Angels game once (against the Padres in 2002, close score) I've been a fan ever since. I've actually been to the Oakland Stadium for fan fest one year and had a reporter ask me my favorite team when I was wandering around on the field... I said the Angels, and my dad was very upset with me and we left immediately.

The seeds were planted before, but I have to say 1994. That may seem odd, considering that was the strike year, but the strike really got my attention on baseball. It helped that the Angels were so good in 1995. I guess 1995 was my first taste of the old Angels paradigm of playing well enough to finish just short. I was as big a casual fan as anyone up until 2002. I went to games all the time and I was thrilled at wins and disappointed at losses, but 2002 is when I really began truly identifying with the team. That's because 2002 was my first year at school in New York after living my entire life in Santa Ana. Anybody who moves away understands how their relationship with their hometown changes. The Angels were my connection back home. The whole "east coast goes to bed before the west coast plays their games" is pretty accurate, but I stayed up late struggling with 2002's version of streaming video. Beating the Yankees and winning the World Series really helped me establish myself in New York. You wouldn't believe the respect Yankees fans gave to a kid wearing an Angels hat in the city.

Question? If you could relive the 2002 season all over again here on the board, in detailed fashion, game by game till the Erstad's final catch, would you be interested?
