Did anyone else get a little emotional when your childhood hero died 40 years later?  I was at a loss of words when he vanished.

    Spoiler

Although im a little younger(born in the late 80's) i grew up with the OT and Luke, so for me it was extremely sad. If it had to happen they should have waited until the end of the trilogy. This is the end of the "Skywalker" saga. Luke should have made it to the end.

i keep seeing people complain about rey using the force with no training.

luke learned how to use use a light saber, blindfolded, to deflect laser shots in about 30 seconds of time with obi wan. he destroyed a death star using the force after maybe 2-3 days of instruction.

rey grew up completely alone from the time she was about 4, using the force without knowing it to survive.  talk about on the job training.

besides, it's fantasy bordering on mythology. sometimes, you just have to go with it.

    Spoiler

Its not that shes using to force thats a problem, its to the extent shes using it at this point in her journey. TLJ takes place literally right after TFA so with absolutely no taining of any kind and maybe a week or two in universe (From the start of TFA to the end of TLJ) she goes from a nobody on Jakku to a near Mastery of the Force? Nope sorry it doesnt work that way. Anakin, the freaking chosen one, born of the force even needed years of training. I dont care if shes unrelated to legacy characters, that shes just some random girl with the force(though we already knew from the previous six movies you dont need to be a Skywalker to be strong in the force) theres no developement here. She's just winning lightsaber battles in TFA/TLJ, Lifting huge boulders with no strain, hell even Yoda struggled to hold the crumbling ceiling after Dooku brought it down. And the Whole "darkness rises and the light to meet it" is such a cop out excuse for why shes so stong. The Force created Anakin to counter Plagueis meddling with the force. AGAIN he still need to be trained for over 10 years. Its like they want Rey to be a legend without any of the work put in.

Yeah, i agree sometimes you just gotta roll with it, but to me, in this case they are going against long established "rules" of the Star Wars universe. That line from Kylo kind of sums it up "let the past die, Skywalker, The Jedi, the Sith...etc" is basically Disney telling us in movie that whatever what had seen before forget about it, cause we're changing it.

Theres a fan theory that Snoke is actually inside Kylo now and has taken over his body. I’m not sure how much I buy  into that but it makes a little sense. I think Luke told Rey he could see Snoke inside and corrupting Kylo which is why he tried to kill him. Snoke was portrayed as being powerful enough to get into both the heads of Kylo and Rey and admits all the conversations they had with each other were actually Snoke controlling them. Snoke even told Rey he knew exactly what she was thinking, hence him toying with her when she tried pulling the lightsaber. I have a hard time believing Kylo was able to kill Snoke the way he did and Snoke not know about it. It would have completely contradicted his characters ability. So it’s possible Episode 9 will show the struggle between Snoke and Ben fighting over Kylos body. But in the end, Ben would just redeem himself and it would be very Return of the Jedish to me.

    Spoiler

I dont know if i buy the body switch theory, but something tells me Snoke isnt done for just yet. I cant recall where i read it, but in one of the books its stated that "Snoke hides his true appearance, even while in the comapny of others" or something to that effect. Maybe he'll be back.

Ben was the closest thing he'd ever have to a son and his sister and best friend's son. There were other trainees as well at the temple. This was his chance to rebuild the Jedi Order. And he feels like he blew it. He watched Ben be seduced by the dark side and there was nothing he could do. This would be enough to cause most people to collapse emotionally.

    Spoiler

I mean i guess it would be pretty devastating, but its not like it was Lukes fault. Its implied in one of the novels that Snoke had been corrupting Ben since before his birth. Also, under Yoda's watch 10,000 jedi perished, the jedi order which lasted for thousands of years was no more and the Sith rose to power, and yet he still believed in the force and was willing to train Luke.

I think it’s just another head game Luke was playing on him.  In the Force Awakens when Kylo sees Finn with Anakins lightsaber, he gets extremely mad and demands he gives him the lightsaber because he says it belongs to him.  I think the whole projection with Luke was just one giant mind game to screw with Kylo and get him to appear unhinged in front of this new Empire he is leading.  Show them he’s not stable enough to be a leader. Perfect example of this is when he’s firing on Luke with all the weapons and General Lux finally has to step in and tell them to stop while making the snide remark to Kylo asking if he thinks he got him.  I think Episode 9 will have a power struggle between Kylo and Lux.  I just wish the Lux character had a stronger presence and was less whiney.

    Spoiler

You know that is just so Luke right there, it is actually kind of brilliant. Hux seemed to be the butt of many jokes, and was actually pushed around quite a bit. i felt a little sorry for him the be quite honest. When Snoke force pulled him acorss the bridge early on infront of the whole crew, that was just humiliating.Thats is one interesting dynamic im looking forward to in 9. Will the first order willingly follow Ben?  Its so funny that Snoke turned out to be nobody really. people have been speculating since before TFA about who he is and is was all for naught. I loved the way Serkis handled Snoke. I really wanted to see more of him.  Snoke seemed really interested in Vader, was it just the Skywalker bloodline? I mean Sidious was really the last true Sith Lord and Powerful as hell, yet he doesnt ever mention him. Its still a mystery how he even knows what he does about what happened with Vader and Luke.

My take on that was Luke knows Kylo is extremely arrogant and had he projected the grey haired, raggedy, homely, old Luke, Kylo probably would have thought Luke was weak.  So he projected the young, strong, Jedi Master that Kylo remembered. And Luke knew he would get a reaction out of Kylo that way.  Just my opinion of course.

    Spoiler

Interesting take... i like it a lot. Thats probably exactly why he did it. Still why with Anakins saber? why not his own that he built? even though they didnt exactly lock sabers, i would have loved to see that old green one last time during that scene. I mean i know it was in the flashback, but only for a few seconds. what a tease!

Thats why I said let’s see what happens in Episode 9 before judging this movie. We really don’t know what’s going to happen with Luke. I feel they are already doing something different with Luke than what we’ve seen before. Luke projecting himself through the Force is something we haven’t seen before. Let’s see what he can do in death.  I keep thinking of what Obi-Wan said in ANH.  Strike me down and I’ll become more powerful than you can possibly imagine. Wonder if that has any truth with Luke also.

    Spoiler

Fair point, i guess im just letting my disappointment could my judgement here. It's possible especailly now that Carrie is gone that he might have a big role to play in 9. I willing to give it a chance.

ETA: Speaking of the projection scene, i found it strange that he appeared younger and with Anakins saber. I wonder why that was? if it has any kind of story significance or was just a choice by Johnson.

In no way is Rey superpowered in this.  Both Luke and Snoke pointed this out. Luke said she was very powerful but it was also raw and she is very much unpredictable. That’s what scared him in the first place.

As for Poe, he’s supposed to be in insanely skilled pilot. They haven’t shown it too much which I think they were trying to do him taking on the ship by himself, but character wise, he’s supposed to be unmatched as a pilot.

    Spoiler

Luke could barely lift one rock, did you see the amount and size of the boulders she lifted with no strain, it was as if she's been training for 20 years. I dont even think Yoda could make it look as easy as she did. and she sure is an extermely talented lightsaber duelist with literally no training in how to use one. The way she handled those praetorians... Im not really sure what they are going for here...but it sure comes of a super powerful.

that really comes off like a rant when i read it back, but i really dont hate the character im just trying to prove a point. they should have had a more gradual build up in power imo.

Poe i get that he supposed to be great, its just come on, theres being really skilled and then theres over the top. Its like a top ww2 ace taking on 50 fighters alone and surviving.

Very, very bold movie. I’m still unsure of the whole thing and I think I might be that way for a while. I definitely need to see it a couple more times to try and digest it. However, I think this is one of those movies that a lot of people will end up liking AFTER Episode 9 is released. Or at least people will find it much more enjoyable.  I think there is a lot of WTF moments going on in people’s head and once they see he entire trilogy completed, this movie will be much more appreciated.

Youre assuming Luke’s story is done in all of this.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he still has a rather large part in Episode 9.  Just because he’s dead doesn’t mean he’s gone from the story. Obi-Wan and Yoda proved that one. Speaking of Yoda, it wasn’t until he appeared and destroyed the tree that Luke woke up to what his purpose was. Rey wasn’t going to go back to the island after the way she was treated by him and finding out the story with Kylo. At this point the best thing he can do to train Rey is to die (which he said was his purpose on the island) and come to hear as a ghost.

As for it being un-Luke like to kill Kylo in his sleep, he explains in the movie he realized the same thing. He hesitated in killing Kylo even though he said Kylo was pretty much the embodiment of the Dark aside at that point. But Kylo caught him standing over him and reacted towards it. Luke wasn’t going to kill Kylo even though he knew he should.

    Spoiler

Thats exactly why im disappointed, i dont want to see another force ghost, its been done already. Theres no reason Luke should have been on that island, there was no explanation other than he was feeling sorry for himself. I mean after all these years he needed Yoda to tell him failure is the best teacher? I think he learned that in the OT. They didnt know what to do with Luke so they took the easy way out. I dont see why he and Rey couldnt have gone on adventures together similar to Obi/Anakin. Now that to me, would have been fun to see. I like the chemistry between Mark and Daisy. But its is what it is.

Dude had some serious shit in his life. Raised without his parents on a crap planet. Aunt and uncle who raised him murdered by the empire. First mentor killed by a nightmare machine/Sith who killed his father and an entire planet. Destroys space station with countless people on it. Nearly killed by a wampa. Strange ass training by an overgrown frog. Finds out the  nightmare machine/Sith is his father. Loses hand to nightmare machine/Sith. Nearly eaten by a giant desert vagina with teeth. (Lucas had issues) Nearly killed by nightmare machine/Sith's boss while trying to save nightmare machine/Sith. Saves nightmare machine/Sith. Nightmare machine/Sith subsequently dies. Trains nephew. Fails miserably.  Dude deserves a bit of PTSD consideration.

    Spoiler

That is a good point, its just why has none of that bothered him in the 25 years before Bens Fall? Ben is what broke him finally? ehh as you pointed out he's been through hell and back already. I mean i guess its possible, i just dont buy it. and to cut himself off from the force? not even Old Ben went that far and he went through just about as much as Luke. Maybe i'll change my mind in time about how they handled him. for now though, i strongly dislike it. I mean why did they bring the OT3 back? just to kill them off? it would have been better to do a trilogy without them in it. Disney knew they would get buts in the seats, thats why. Its one thing that irks me about the ST so far, everything thing is bigger and stronger and badder than anything in the OT. Super powered Jedi with no traning, bb-8 can do anyting, Poe(and i like the character) can take on a destroyer alone.

just talked with one of my school parents. he thought a lot of it was focused on keeping the series relevant for millenials.

he also said there are light saber fights, good guys and bad guys (depending on your persepctive), and flying vehicles.

I could totally see that. I feel like that's the Disney influence right there. I dont care what anyone thinks of Lucas at least he had a vision and made his films they way he wanted. He didnt cater.

  12. Im curious what ya'll thought of...

    Spoiler

how they handled Luke in this. Im not sure i agree with anything they've done with his character so far in the ST. They basically made it all his fault any of this is happening. He tries to kill Ben in his sleep? That i could never see Luke doing. And what exectly was the payoff for finding Luke, He really didnt teach Rey anything at all and then he dies. Guess Jedi dont need training anymore? It used to take a lifetime of training to become a competent force user. I know its not his story anymore,i just find it to be lazy to kill him off. its such a tired trope, old master dies. I mean Luke is only 55 in TLJ.

  13. Ok... just got back a few hours ago from seeing this. Not really sure what im feeling right now. There was some really good stuff and then a few things that i didnt care for. Its a long movie with a lot going on,but is paced rather nicely, didnt drag at any points for me. Its still fresh,  definitely need to see it one or two more times. Right now id give it a 6/10, maybe 6.5.

Have to think the statement about Pujols playing first more in '18 was also a subtle way of showing some respect to Ohtani through the media. A surefire HOFer and baseball legend is deferring to you so you can play here and DH.

I like how dark horse the Angels are in this. All the articles on the Mariners, Rangers, and Padres feeling confident make me optimistic.

Agreed. Shit usually goes down when we aren't hearing much in the media. I feel like the Angels have just as good a chance as any of the other teams to sign Ohtani.

  15. Personally, i'm fed up with the "loot crates"/gambling boxes. Its widespread in the gaming industry now and only seems to be getting worse. its as if they build games around crates and microtransactions these days.

Yeah i guess its nice that EA made some changes for BF2, but come on, they knew what they were doing. This isn't their first rodeo. It took gamers a very short time to notice how fucked the economy in the game was and yet, the company who designed and has been working on the system for the last two years didn't intend for it to come out the way it did? Sorry, that's BS. They thought they could get away with it and gamers weren't having it.

I know its not just EA, but they've got to be the leader in gambling crates, i swear every game with their name on it has crates in it. Hell, they changed the gearing system in the MMO i play(a Bioware/EA product) in the last year, after 5 years of a perfectly fine gearing system where you would earn a token from doing whatever group content which you would then turn in for the gear you wanted or needed to a random loot crate system. It destroyed the community,  it got so bad they they were forced to merge 20 servers a couple weeks ago, down to 5.

the funny and true thing is getting laid so much for simply playing a musical instrument. you hear the stories or see the movies and it seems ridiculous, but when myspace came out is when I was in various bands or projects and my main pic was me on stage at the house of blues playing. chicks used to message me just to fuck. it was wild. it made me laugh because playing bass is the no name of the band but broads didn't care as long as you were on stage or had an instrument in your hand.

ps. only victor Wooten and les clay pool play slap bass

Never thought i'd see mention of Vic Wooten on AW. Im not a bassist, but i have mad respect for that man. Who needs guitars when you can throw down like that!

  17. This thread has been good for a few yuks. I cant believe you guys remember half this shit. It was such a breath of fresh air to come here from the old Angels.com forums.

Lee...what can i say about that poor sod that hasn't already been said? He did bring a lot of the harassment on himself, I admit at times it was funny, but also a little sad the way everyone seemed to constantly goad this old fuck into an argument. HA! good times right?
