Second Base got a reaction from Hufflepuff in Angels sign Zach Plesac (1 year, $1 million) - DFA Kolarek
I like that Plesac didn't regret breaking COVID protocols since shelter in place was stupid and evil to start with. However, his pitching hasn't impressed anyone for a couple years now.

I don't care what team it is.  If you have a guy with a name like it came out of a wild west story like Braxton Garrett you don't trade him.
Pretty sure this is the dude that shot Billy the Kid, or Jesse James, or gave Doc Holliday tuberculosis.

I'd love to be able to get Braxton Garrett in a Taylor Ward swap. Not sure that's in the cards. Probably Edward Cabrera, whose no slouch himself.

arthroscopic.  No labral or cuff repair.  Just cleanup.  Plus, it's one year.  Perfect type of flyer.  15m with at least middle rotation floor and a little more 2/3 potential.  High trade value upside if they're out at the deadline.  Good bridge to next year for a better FA class.

They're absolutely better. It has cost them a pretty penny in finances and talent but that's what a bold, aggressive GM does.

They added Sale, Bummer, Lopez, and Kelenic without losing anyone and you can’t see how they’re better?

Every year, everything gets more expensive, but particularly now with the ridiculous inflation we're seeing. MLB players and teams probably aren't exempt from this as their operating costs and costs of living have similarly skyrocketed. So a player that was with 10 million a year or two ago now probably goes for closer to 20 million.
I think as an owner and GM, you either have to get used to more expensive prices for free agents, or wait for the market to correct itself, hopefully with a new president and a better economic plan.
Not sure either path is a very good idea at this point. The best you can hope for is inexpensive home grown talent, and without a great farm system, the Angels are at a deficit there.

I mean, it's good and bad I guess. Their post hype prospects have done remarkably well. Teams don't usually get a lot out of guys that are 26-ish with no options left, yet the Angels scored on Ward, Thaiss, Moniak, Rengifo, Soriano....
And then there's the guys they draft and are almost immediately in the majors before any hype can come, like Silseth, Joyce, Neto, Schanuel....
It seems to me that the Angels have done really poor in the areas where prospect hot sheets really focus on, which is drafting or signing toolsy teenagers and developing them so that they're major league ready at 22. The last guys that fit that description in the system was Adell, or maybe Maitan. They did have Marsh but they dealt him for O'Hoppe which seems like a very good trade for both sides right now.
Personally, I think they've got something in Caden Dana.

I think it's going to be a quiet off-season for the Angels. They won't want to overpay and screw their future, which is kind of what they're experiencing right now. And they've got a lot of young guys that they'll need to figure out if they're building blocks or not. Neto, O'Hoppe, Bachman, Joyce, Silseth, Moniak, Adell....
I think it's a solid bet that they'll continue to address the bullpen, and add a short term veteran bat and a back of the rotation arm and that's it. Unexciting, inexpensive and disappointing. But how else are they supposed to rebuild their depleted farm system?

How long until it comes out that the Angels are cutting payroll because of the RSN uncertainty?
Also, it's still impressive that the Angels still haven't exceeded the luxury tax, no matter where it's set. It would be one thing if they were always at 160 because that's their cap, but the fact that the luxury tax continues to climb and the Angels continue to regard it as the line they won't cross suggests it's more of a principle thing for Arte.
