    final 2023 payroll: $215 mil

    beginning 2024 payroll: $174 mil

luxury tax for 2024: $237 mil

they've got plenty of room to play around with.

A couple things to look at. The bottom of the screen shows net salary vs lux tax at $189 mil. Second, Trout and Rendon actual salaries combined this year exceed AAV by about $5 mil and I think it's understood that Arte operates by actual salary instead of AAV so we should say the beginning payroll for 2024 is around $194 mil which means even to get back to last season they have $20ish mil. Let's hope the first half of the season goes well enough for him to bless the increase for the back half

I don't know about just a one season suspension, since Pete Rose was banned for life. Now MLB is going to have to make a decision and they should do what they should have done a long time ago and reinstate Pete Rose, he has served his damn time. They need to make a serious rule like a 3-5 year ban, but this lifetime bullsh*t is a bridge too far in my opinion. There has to be some middle ground or just stick with the lifetime ban. Just be consistent, because now their backs are to the wall with Shohei potentially violating the same rule.

Rose was accused of betting on baseball, including his own team. It was well know at that time that betting on baseball would result in a lifetime ban. I was a huge fan of the Big Red Machine and Rose in particular but I can't see any way around sticking to the letter of the law on that one.

I doubt Ohtani or Ippei or anyone involved here was betting on baseball and since sports books are such a huge sponsor of all leagues now I don't see any way, short of him betting on baseball, that he gets even a full season ban.

Last person he talks about is pesche. Says he wanted out of Carolina over the summer. Go get him beeker.

Two teams off the top of my head, Toronto and Edmonton, are going to early exit these playoffs because the middle of their D is atrocious. Maybe Pesce wants to stay on this side of the border but there's going to be competition for him, maybe even Florida replaces Montour with him or the Devils lure him home

  4. Pesce is gonna be in demand if he doesn't re-sign in Carolina. He and Skjei are a rock solid second pair and he's a great PKer. He's been a 'Cane lifer so he might just want to stay home but he'd be a great guy to help lead your D

Demelo is more bottom pair guy one a good team

Maybe even take a chance on Sean Walker. Not that big but great with the puck on his stick and his skating makes him a good PKer. I know you guys love your ex-Kings

Right now, the beeker FA scoresheet looks like he is 2 for 4 on signings. Gudas and vatrano vs killorn and strome. Good thing we have the two duds signed for more money and longer term.

The idea of Killorn is to be someone who can show how winning teams back check and win puck battles. He could be a scoring threat with the right center. I have no idea why they gave Strome that much term. No way he'd ever be a 50 point guy again unless they brought Panarin with him

I don't know enough about the ownership situation in Arizona to have an opinion on whether that is why their situation is what it is. One thing is clear - they can't continue to play in a 4,500-seat college hockey arena.

The idea was floated about moving them here before the expansion franchise was awarded. Seeing their plight now explains why Bill Foley was only interested in an expansion franchise, not in buying and moving an existing one. He preferred to start fresh rather than inheriting someone else's mistakes.

They got themselves evicted from their arena for non-payment and now they're waiting for some state or municipal taxpayers to bail them out with land and a building. Bettman really wants a team in Arizona and it should be working but they (ownership) refuse to act like top professionals. Even if they end up moving a new expansion will end up in Phoenix but it will be same old shit until they force these clowns to sell

Suns already said no.  Then again, looking on the interwebs, it's a city owned property.  So don't know.

They got evicted in Glendale and can’t cut a deal with the Suns in Phoenix. Horseshit ownership

@arch stanton  At this rate, your Avalanche will need "Hello, my name is" tags around the locker room for a few games.

Overall I’m pretty happy about what they did. Would have liked a truer 4C who can win some face offs on the PK but as long as the big boys stay healthy they’re favorites.

i watched a little bit of the race last night on espn 2. no idea who won or where they were racing, but lou said i should watch it, so i did.

it's starting to grow on me a little bit.

the old man in me doesn't like that they drive over the red-and-white stripes on the corners. it seems like they're driving over a part of the course they're not supposed to, like catching a pass out of bounds.

That was the Bahrain Grand Prix. A little something they cooked up to screw up our traffic and overrun us with Eurotrash for a few days every year in the late winter when weather is too bad to race anywhere else. I can't get into it at all. The cars all look alike. There's never any lead passing or lead changes and they don't even look like cars
