  1. Agree in Schilling's case it does. Hi back. Hope all is well.
  2. Broadcasters are more important. Does anyone really believe it is just a coincidence the Kansas City Royals became a contending team after they hired Rex Hudler and Steve Physioc?
  3. Arrogance and desire to be constantly be in the limelight doesn't always mean stupid.
  4. East: Yankees Central: Royals West: Astros Wild Cards: Blue Jays, Angels
  5. Agree. There is no way Scioscia opts out of his contract and there is no way Arte Moreno will stop being an involved owner. Even if the Angels hired a quality GM, he wouldn't have a huge impact.
  6. To criticize Dipoto for not developing a farm system that produces MLB players slows a lack of understanding of the process of drafting and developing MLB players. I'm going to exclude Trout from all of this because he is a unique, once in generation player. But each of the other players you mention spent several years in the minor leagues before finally establishing themselves with the Angels. Dipoto was hired in 2011 and it is premature to say his drafts were failures. Dipoto was also hamstrung because the Angels first pick in 2012 was 114 and 59 in 2013. The jury is still out on how many of Dipoto's players in the farm system will be Major League level players. But saying Dipoto never produced a Weaver or Aybar ignores the reality of how long it takes for a player to go from draft choice to Major Leaguer.
  7. Using farm team rankings to defend your position on Dipoto weakens your argument because farm team rankings are about as meaningful as pennant race predictions in January. At one time, the Angels had a farm system that Baseball America rated as one of the best in baseball. Remember when Casey Kotchman, Jeff Mathis, Dallas McPherson, Steve Shell, Brandon Wood, Reggie Willits were going to make the Angels a powerhouse for many seasons. As all of us here are well aware, each of these highly rated prospects turned out to be a bust.
  8. Angels should sign Livan Hernandez. I'm sure he has another three-four good years left in him.
  9. In this case, what should black people be responsible for?
  10. Of course not and I hope no one here at Angelswin would even suggest they would.
  11. Then have the second base umpire count or a put clock on the scoreboard. Doesn't matter to me. My point is according to the rules, as they are currently written, MLB pitchers are required to deliver a pitch within 12 seconds after they receive the baseball. MLB needs to find a way to enforce a rule that is already in the book instead of adding something ridiculous like banning shifts.
  12. Before MLB comes up with new gimmick rules to increase scoring or speed up the game they should require umpires to enforce the rules that are already part of the Official Rule Book. Balls and strikes are called according to rule 2.00: "The STRIKE ZONE is that area over home plate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is a line at the hollow beneath the kneecap. The Strike Zone shall be determined from the batter’s stance as the batter is prepared to swing at a pitched ball." Calling balls and strikes according to the rules will no longer force batters to swing at balls six inches off the ground or a foot outside. Enforce rule 8.04: "When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter within 12 seconds after he receives the ball. Each time the pitcher delays the game by violating this rule, the umpire shall call “Ball.” The 12-second timing starts when the pitcher is in possession of the ball and the batter is in the box, alert to the pitcher. The timing stops when the pitcher releases the ball. When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter within 12 seconds after he receives the ball. Each time the pitcher delays the game by violating this rule, the umpire shall call “Ball.” The 12-second timing starts when the pitcher is in possession of the ball and the batter is in the box, alert to the pitcher. The timing stops when the pitcher releases the ball." No reason to have a debate about a new rule because the "pitch clock" is already there! If a timer on the scoreboard is too upsetting to the purists, then have the umpire count to twelve once the pitcher receives the ball in the same fashion a basketball referee counts the ten seconds as the ball is advanced up the court. Since the rule only applies when the bases are empty, this should be no problem for the home plate umpire.
  13. There was speculation it was the Rockies that made $110 million offer and Shields had no interest in pitching in Colorado.
  14. He made four starts in the 2014 post season and was only good in one of them. Game 3 of the ALDS.
  15. Like Josh Hamilton? A lot of Angels fans were pretty pumped with they opened that gift from Santa.
  16. I don't see the need for the Angels to pursue Haren...at least at this point in the off season. There are better options out there right now and, since Haren has closed the door on being traded to any other MLB team other than the Angels, the opportunity to trade for him should still be there later.
  17. Wood and Sean Rodriguez played for the Bees at the same time and both them were class acts who were hard workers.
  18. There was no way Miami was going to let Mathis get away. His option was exercised weeks ago. Giancarlo Stanton is a very talented ball player, but there is no doubt that Jeff Mathis is the face of the Marlins franchise. Marlins exercise $1.5 million option on Jeff Mathis
  19. Probably not because Jesus is in the distribution end of the business. I can't remember if it is Felipe or Matty that does the stitching.
  20. It is November 1 and a journalist or blogger has to write something baseball related. A column of pure speculation is the result and this causes fans to get excited, depressed, or angry at the baseless predictions made. I enjoy reading these types of columns but they cannot be taken seriously.
  21. In a word, yes. The only function of a MLB team is win as many games as possible. I don't believe there is any disagreement that Maddon is a better manager than Renteria so the Cubs had to make the move even if it meant not demonstrating "common courtsey."
  22. Sign Franklin Morales to a minor league contract with a spring training invite: I’ve still got to take care of rotation depth and a bullpen lefty. I think I can take care of both of those in one fell swoop by signing Franklin Morales to a minor league deal. Morales was dreadful in 2014, but these things happen when you pitch for the Rockies. This would be the worst possible for move for the Angels. The things that happened to Franklin Morales in 2014 had less to do with him pitching for the Rockies and more about him being a very below average pitcher. Angels need to stay far away from him. Selfishly, I would not want him pitching for the Bees.
  23. I agree this is nothing more than a free agent signing and to say otherwise is following some unwritten code that has no basis in reality. The only important question is are the Cubs better today with Maddon than they were last week with Renteria? That's a pretty easy question to answer.
  24. After reading through this thread, I wish I was still coaching high school baseball because I would change my entire philosophy. I remember having a team that over achieved the entire season. We qualified for the regional, beat two teams that were higher ranked than we were, and lost in the regional championship game. I remember huddling in the outfield after the game and telling the kids how proud of them I was. That the loss in the game we just finished was tough but the victories that placed us in that game were special and they can be proud of what they accomplished. But if I could go back to 1988, I would now have a completely different message. I would tell them they were losers. That believing in themselves, picking each other up, winning big game after big game when no one expected it, and battling until the final pitch of the region championship game doesn't mean anything because we are getting on the bus without the trophy. I would make sure they were ashamed of themselves and not proud of anything they accomplished.
  25. I heard it and I agree with what Reynolds said. I don't have any statistical data, but I've seen many Bees game in the last several years and the run-on-contact play seems like a failure the majority of the time. I don't understand why the Angels continue to use it as much as they do.
