  1. That would have to be something collectively bargained for. With how it is now with no cap and people giving 10 plus year contracts I don't see the players giving that up. That being said It would be absolutely better for baseball if this happened. More player movement. A more even playing field. I would also argue a hard cap would be beneficial as well. But that is a discussion for another day.

Wulff and the other guy are worth what?   Some $5-6 billion?   Why can't they front enough of the cost???????

When other state and local governments are giving funding to provide these stadiums. The owners will always be asking for some sort of handout. If you don't have to pay for it all why would you. I imagine that is what they are thinking. Chargers basically got a free stadium out of leaving San Diego.  Arte is trying to do the same thing with Anaheim or another city.

His career .300 average is in jeopardy this year. I speak about it in the 1B primer article.

Why does the career .300 average matter? You think it matters that much that he would throw away 59 million dollars? The guy is still a first ballot Hall of Famer with out question.

I agree with Strad in this case, mainly because what is the point to cutting him when we dont have a better option?  I think he steps down on his own after this season personally to protect the career 300 avg, but for this year at least hes the best option we have for the everyday 1B.   Till Thiass or someone else pushes him, any discussion of cutting him is moot.

    I will take that bet

I'm surprised Eppler hasn't done anything yet. Though I wonder if his first big move is to sign Trout to a longterm extension and he's waiting on Machado and Harper to sign first.

If he is waiting for Machado and Harper to sign. I imagine they won't be signing soon. They will be exhausting as many options and as much bidding as possible to drive up the prices. A lot of free agents and trades could happen before they both get deals finalized.

....are you and kevinb the same guy? I quoted hin, didnt see if you quoted me earlier.

Anyway, i dont think hes a dick for turning down deal. I thinks its a dick move to turn down that deal.

Its his life and money, so its not for me to say. I just think thats by far and a way a fair deal, given that he so far has never lived up to the hype, and is already being offered to get paid as if he has.

To put it in bigger picture terms, a contract like that is a huge burden to a team...it effects other moves. Thats fine. But its basically saying "300 million isnt enough, pay me more, regardless of how it effects the rest of the team."

I 9 times out of 10 support the player in these situations.i think they should get all they can. But 300 mill is already pretty much breaking the bank. Maybe he wants more years?

Yes. This is my work sn. I understand you saying you think it is a dick move. And maybe he hasn't lived up to the hype that was set upon him at whatever age it was that Sports Illustrated made him the cover. But To say he hasn't lived up to it to some extent is wrong. The guy made the league at 19 years old, has won an MVP has gotten the Nationals to the playoffs a couple times.

So far in his career his avg season is

    279 388 512 900 OPS 32 home runs and 32 doubles.

While sure that isn't Trout that is still incredible and has made him a top 5 player in baseball? And he is just 26 years old. I get that 300 million is a lot of money. I just don't get why he would sign the 300 million dollar deal now when free agency is about to start. He has waited all this time to be courted by 15 teams why not get to experience it and see if the bid goes up. If it does he wins if it doesn't and he has to "settle" for 300 million so be it. But to me there's no reason to accept that deal now, it actually makes me like him a little more than I do, because I know if I was in his shoes 300 million guaranteed would be hard to walk away from. But you have to give him credit he has a ton of confidence and he thinks, whether he is right or wrong, that he can get more. We will see if he is at the end of the day.

Good catch, i was off. I thought stanton was 275.

So then I shall refrain from having an opinion.

Of course, that would include everyone here, yourself included, from having any opinion. Being that we arent actually Angels. So what do we care if they win or lose?

To the second point I care less and less the older I get. I still enjoy it but whether my favorite sports teams win or lose doesn't have some dramatic effect on my life. I was more at odds with your comment about him being a dick because he turned down a deal. I don't know why you think that makes him a dick? I guess that was my real problem with what you said.

I don’t get why people are so down on Cozart, you guys realize he was arguably the best hitter they had at the beginning of the season.

He will be 33 years old next year. He hit 219 last year and he's coming off an injury that took him out the entire year. And the year he was going into his free agent year he had a career year.

Adell's athleticism is unmatched.  There's no way he's Trout because no one is Trout.  There never was a Trout and there my never be another.  Same with Shohei and the same with Simmons.  Just unbelievably unique talent here in Anaheim and Adell will fit right in.

As for the question, is he THAT good, I suppose I'd need you to characterize what "THAT" is exactly.

If it's Trout, then no, Adell isn't THAT good.

If it's Calhoun, yeah, Adell is even better than THAT.

If it's a future all-star, then yeah, I believe Adell is THAT good.

To me, the high end is a .290 hitter that blasts 40 HR's and steals 30 bases.  His OBP and batting average would be solidly below Trout and his defense would be about even.  That's the high end, meaning he's a perennial MVP candidate, expected to finish Top 5 each year.

The low of course is that he's a toolsy 4th OF, because in that scenario he wouldn't have been able to make enough contact or his pitch recognition would never properly develop which would keep his BA and OBP too low.  Sort of like a less fast, but more powerful Billy Hamilton.

The middle ground is a good every day player and occasional all-star.  I think he'll settle in as the sort that hits .260 or .270, gets on base around .330, hits 30 HR's and steals 20 bases and plays very solid defense.  Basically, Justin Upton, but faster and MUCH better defense.  Or George Springer with less on base ability and faster.  Or a more athletic, stronger Torii Hunter.

That's what I believe Jo Adell is going to be.

So you are saying the Angels have 3 players that have never existed in MLB history and Adell is just under that. Adell is a 30 30 home run steals guy? How many of those have their been in baseball. Simmons is the greatest shortstop in history? Wow I haven't heard this argued before. You do realize we just left an ERA that gave us Jeter, ARod, Tejada and Nomar right?

Would rather keep Pujols, and let him retire with the $59 million owed him after 2019.   Who knows what Cano will bring, especially after being suspended, and being 36.   It's time to prepare to get much younger at 1B.

Pujols is not retiring before his contract ends. Stop with this nonsense. It won't happen. I would much rather have Cano then Pujols not even close. Younger and better I have no care at all about steroid use or being suspended. Hell if he gets suspended he doesn't get the money. I wish Pujols would and get suspended for 3 years we'd save a lot of cash.
