  1. It's a weird issue, because there are a number of factors at work. On the extreme ends there are some people that can down 4,000 calories of crap every day, do nothing, and still look great naked; and there are some people that can watch what they eat, work their ass off, and still be significantly overweight. I think the vast majority of us lie somewhere in the wide range between those two extremes (though age matters a lot here too). I was pretty overweight (not horribly so... Like 5'7" 190-200) for most of my teens/early twenties, and I was never bothered by good-natured teasing by friends or co-workers mainly because I understood there wasn't any malice in it on the part of others and I knew it was my doing (i.e. It wasn't a disease, but just my refusal to change things). That being said, it would've bothered me if someone did it with the intent to cause harm. On the flip side, if someone approached me with a "Hey, you wanna talk about a plan to get healthier?", I would've viewed that as a genuinely kind gesture and taken no offense at all. In the end, I changed my habits on my own accord and got down to a healthier weight (generally between 155-165 now), though I am prone to the occasional month or so of terrible eating. But I always bounce back and correct it.
  2. I've always found that high altitude thing interesting with regards to mpg. I had a Civic with a K&N air filter (put on by the previous owner) all through college that would average 35-37 highway mpg normally. I drove it back and forth from CA to KS four or five times while I owned it, and it would get 42 mpg or more every time through the Rockies. I think the highest I ever got (based on pump/trip odometer math) was 46.
  3. People spend lots of money on dumb stuff all the time (the world of collectibles in general can provide countless examples). I commend this kid for identifying and exploiting this particular instance of that.
  4. PSP is pretty upscale in certain areas, but it still has its underclass and residual rough parts. Also, it's still in the desert.
  5. I have a framed thing I put together after the 02' series. It has the PE front page from the day after game 7, 02' cards of several players on that team, a ticket from the ALDS clinching game against the Yanks, a ticket from game 6 of the WS, and a pennant from that year.
  6. The deal is that I have to get a re-creation of a Joe Mauer baseball card that will not exceed 5 inches top to bottom. Everyone involved agreed that I get final choice of coloring, and I get to review preliminary sketches of the work before choosing the artist.
  7. It is a no, though that area is free of any blight. Just some pasty, chunky skin.
  8. It was never notarized, but it was discussed.
  9. Nope. The placement is my choice according to the contract, and it will be back shoulder.
  10. I will not be paying for it. A number of people have pledged money to the cause.
  11. I'll follow through with it. There's a whole office behind this at this point, so there's no getting out of it.
  12. Went to the game tonight with about ten former coworkers. It was gut-wrenching, but the Twins pulled it out. So it's still not over. Just need the Twins to sweep the WSox in a series absolutely nobody (players included) cares about.
  13. Catalina is solid for a weekend date sort of thing with an SO. Take the boat over, rent a golf cart and drive around (there are some excellent views), check out some shops, grab dinner, and get a couple drinks. It's nothing terribly exciting, but it's pretty and will score you a few relationship points.
  14. Not a bad idea. I'll have to check the language.
  15. Back in March a guy I worked with (who is a Twins fan from MN) was complaining that the Twins would suck this year. I pointed out that they outperformed their stats last year, but still had 83 wins and had some good young guys (Sano, Buxton) that could help out this year. I jokingly mentioned that I would get a Joe Mauer tattoo if they didn't win at least 60. A couple days later he came to me with an offer. $200 if the Twins win 60 or more. A Joe Mauer tattoo if they won 59 or less. Seemed like easy money at the time. Then we got a written version of the bet with tattoo pledge money from various coworkers. Once again, this was in March. I didn't think it would come to this.
  16. At one point all they had to do was go 12-31. Meaning they've gone 7-26 since then.
  17. If the Twins don't reach 60 wins this year, I will have to get a tattoo of Joe Mauer on my back left shoulder. This was a work bet made in March. Seemed like easy money at the time. I held this from the board for a while, figuring it wouldn't come down to the wire like this. Bottom line: I need the Twins to go 5-5 from here on out. Wish me luck.
  18. I'm looking forward to the Magnificent Seven. I think I'm always intrigued by westerns because they give characters a lot of room to breathe and become larger than life (think Val Kilmer in Tombstone). And I like the idea of seeing Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt work together in that sort of setup. It'll either be very good or a bit disappointing IMO, but I definitely want to find out.
  19. My brother goes to Portland, ME, about three times a year for vacation. He swears it's one of the best places in the country to spend a couple lazy summer or fall days.
  20. That sounds like Manhattan. It's a silly place. But in a great way usually.
  21. https://www.yahoo.com/beauty/maybe-dont-use-your-face-mask-to-be-racist-194523428.html Facepalm for this girl from my alma mater. That said, the area is so white that I can actually understand some people that grew up in the area not even realizing how dumb such a post is.
