It's not really.  It's the total money.  The likelihood a 33 year old Snell will get another $150-190M in free agency in two years is almost zero.  Now was his time (last time) to cash in. 

If he loosens up on location and lowers his contract demands, I’m not sure we’d be very high on his list. Without draft pick compensation and with a more reasonable contract structure, he’ll get a lot of interest.

I haven’t been in favor but signing Martinez would help some…and he would be relatively cheap, compared to Snell…and, if he hits well, give you a chip at the Trade Deadline.

Its the damage to the farm, that's been the issue.
Many of us have said it but I don't think people realize just how truly bad the system was in 2015.  The gap between the Angels and the next worst team was possibly bigger than the gap between that team and the very best farm system in MLB.

Personally I think this makes sense for the Giants. Snell......should have taken the Yankees deal.
Monty or Lorenzen + JD I think still makes sense for us.

That’s why I wanted them to snag JD Davis. It made way too much sense to have insurance at 1st and 3rd and also a good bat.

They can do that AND try to add pieces.  This just seems to be a situation where what he wants and what best suits the Angels doesn't really line up and to date neither side has been willing to make it work for both parties.
The Angels shouldn't be trying to sign anyone who will cost them a pick to a one and done deal -they aren't one player away.

What this doesn’t tell me is whether Arte is actually interested in signing Snell and if he views him as someone who will substantially change the team.

If you thought you might sign him why wouldnt you want to see how he looks? He could sign today and very easily miss the start of the season getting himself into playing shape.

It could. Again, depends on how you spin it. I’d like to believe it means some substantive discussions with Arte doing more than saying no. If I’m guessing, I think Rosenthal probably got it right. Olney wasn’t necessarily inaccurate but maybe painted too optimistic a picture. Olney did say he thought Snell, in the end, would sign with the Angels.

Exactly. Moreno sucks but not wanting to pay Davis almost 7 million isn’t evidence of that.  No team wanted to pay him that much.

He will get to play everyday in Oakland before he gets traded at deadline.

Arte has a terrible track record of going toe to toe with other teams for a player he and other teams equally want. Especially when it's a pitcher. 
They should have wrapped this shit up a week ago before the Urquidy injury. Arte is a dumbass. He has ZERO direction for this team and it's obvious the direction that Perry wants to take (and Wash and Trout) aren't on the same page as the owner.

Arte could surprise us all in the end, but I think most of us are skeptical of that possibility.  It's getting close to opening day.  The way the team is presently constructed just doesn't inspire much confidence from a fan's point of view.  It's still baseball and surprises happen all the time.  I think a lot of fans have baseball fatigue and the season hasn't even started.

Well until Snell signs somewhere that's a legitimate point.  The reporting today that Arte is uninterested suggests otherwise.

May not be a “few years” if it’s an opt out deal after one year…..unlike us, they might be willing to forfeit the pick and pay the tax in the short term because they are a legit Series contender.
