This post will never receive the acclaim that it deserves, but I want you to know that I appreciate it. Also, it's by far the smartest thing ever written in the USC thread.

he's a quiet man. comes from good stock, from a tomato farm in the middle of massachusetts. farm has been in the family for 157 years. mom runs the business side of the family business and is good in keeping clean books. his sister ruth dropped out of college to become a nun. his other sister bonnie runs a day care center near plymouth.
torre worked his way through university by working at a fro-yo shop near the gas station. he was a regular in the weight room, at least when he wasn't volunteering at the local orphanage. he graduated with magna cum laude, then spent his summer building low-income housing in southern mississippi with jimmy carter and the habitat for humanity people. he also likes to do cross-stitch and word searches in his spare time.

Never come to New Mexico. Ever. For your sanity's sake. Also, avoid Texas. But I'm sure you being an educated fellow wouldn't do that in a million years.

I would be happy if the name "Trump" was never associated with the term "military".  My hope is he lets others completely handle it and stays as far away from it as possible.

Look, even if you're going to dismantle something, know what the hell you're talking about. She's not there out of altruism. She's clearly not there for her expertise. She couldn't possibly give half a shit about trying to improve the current system, she knows next to nothing about it.

As far as protests?  Study the civil rights leaders of the 1950s and 60s and try to show half the savvy as they had. Understand that the minds you are trying to reach will subtly look for any reason to disregard the message. If there is violence the message will be immediately lost. Caesar Chavez understood the power of the imagery of hostile law enforcement contrasted with non-violent protesters and the symbolism of arriving from the grape fields to the state capital on Easter Sunday.  The media lustily show violence if there is any and probably ignore you if there isn't. You have to give them a non-violent reason they can't ignore you. This requires amazing discipline and strong leadership.
In general? Accept that because the Republicans have gone so far to the right your tent has to cover a lot of ground. From the Bernie supporters to the coal workers in Appalachia . And that your coalition isn't always going to agree on everything, but that's okay. Be the party of patience and understanding. No name calling! Think Hillary regrets the deplorable statement?  Well she should but sadly probably doesn't. Purely anecdotal experience has about half of the people I see online from the left who are vocal loudly declare that they will "unfriend" or otherwise disassociate with those on the right that supported Trump. They are part of the problem. This social changes in this country should never have had to occur. But they did. And they happened remarkably quickly. Even UEFA still has to remind fans to kindly not throw bananas at certain players. LBGTQIA was declared by the government as mentally ill almost until my birth. Is it a surprise there are stragglers in the process?  An ounce of understanding will go along way in this process. Certainly isolating them only exasperates this problem. You win hearts and minds with kinds words. Not with slurs and anger. The right can use those quite effectively to scare people into voting for them. They create an image of scary minority groups taking away their basic necessities of a happy life and provides a (unrealistic) solution of building a wall as the only way to stop it. How do you scare people into being nice to minority groups? Would you want to?
The left has to vocally accept the process that led Trump to be POTUS. Failure will to do so, even if it is rather unpleasant, will taint your protests as being sour grapes. The opposition cannot be about Trump the person. That approach has failed. Or at the very least has reached its conclusion. Criticizing him as a terrible person at this point is beating a dead horse. Focus on the issues. Repealing of ACA is a great example. The left should be able to have a field day reaching those poor Republicans hearts (and wallets). So far...their leadership has been...less than inspiring.

(They should show this image in any future political communications class as what NOT to do)

Buzzfeed didn't create the memo. They reported that it was circulating around Washington. As far as we know that's true. You can't spend your lifetime lowering the bar then get bent out of shape when someone else goes a step lower.

I actually took a course dedicated to the first amendment as it applies to the press at hippie liberal U. You pretty much nailed it. Trump is a supreme asshole and is clearly opposed to free speech. It's honestly pretty indefensible, and even those that support him should be very wary.
    Yeah, he's a jackass.

OK, it looks like I'm the only one on AW who has taken communication law. Public figures (elected officials, professional athletes, celebrities, etc.) can only successfully sue for libel (i.e., published false, defamatory content) if they can prove that the person who published the statements acted with actual malice (defined as "knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard for the truth"). Actual malice is virtually impossible to prove, and as far as I know, it has never been proven, nor it is intended to be proven.
The reason for this is that if a public figure were able to successfully sue and bankrupt a publication or individual for publishing false, defamatory statements, it would create a chilling effect that would discourage people from saying anything negative at all about a public figure in fear that said public figure could use all the powers at his/her disposal to prove falsity and effectively destroy that person or publication.

This is why no sitting president in recent memory has ever sued someone for making outrageous statements, because they are smart enough to realize their law suit would never fly in court. It's also the reason that tabloids exist, because celebrities are unable to sue for libel, either.

Trump's right trolls the left. The left predictably responds angrily in kind albeit it isn't really their strong point. The right relies on the fact that everyone is in general a reactionary asshole. The left kind of depends on that not being the case. So the right profits in the exchange. It'd almost be funny if it wasn't so tragic.
