What I'm learning from these mock drafts: no one has any clue about who is going to draft whom.

Exactly. But it’s still fun to speculate and get excited about the possibility of drafting someone who can be a solid future contributor for the big league club.

I don’t have the eye for being able to assess talent like most of you on here, so it’s always insightful to read what you all have to say. It’s appreciated.

    The latest from Bleacherreport.

    15. Los Angeles Angels: RHP Matthew Allan, Seminole HS (Fla.)

This is the first spot where it will take an above-slot deal to ink right-hander Matthew Allan to his $4 million asking price, albeit not much above-slot with a $3.89 million slot assignment. The 6'3" right-hander already has three above-average pitches and legitimate frontline upside, making him the top prep arm in a thin class. For an Angels team desperate for pitching, it's a price worth paying.

Looks like BA and Bleacher Report both have the Angels taking Allan.

I hope they do, but you never know with this team.

Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, Calif., hasn't had a player taken in the top few rounds since Adrian Gonzalez was the somewhat surprising No. 1 overall pick of the Marlins back in 2000. Thanks to a breakout fall and a consistently solid spring, Cavaco has popped up to be the next from Eastlake to likely go in the early stages of the Draft.

Cavaco first started getting attention for his complete tools package at the Angel Elite showcase in the fall, where his tremendous raw power particularly stood out. The only question about his offensive profile is how consistently he'll hit to get to that power, as there is some swing and miss to his game. Beyond the bat, Cavaco will show flashes of plus tools across the board. He's clocked sub four-second times home to first out of the box and he has the chance to be a plus defender at third, with very good hands, footwork, a plus arm and a willingness to stick his nose in the dirt.

The industry was sleeping on Cavaco, who wasn't invited to most of the summer showcase circuit events, so there is a lack of track record and the infielder hasn't been challenged against tough competition like some have. But scouts are awake now, pouring in to see this pop-up prospect, one who is now likely to go early enough to forego his commitment to San Diego State.

Eppler has never traded a significant player with remaining major league control. I think José Alvarez is probably the most established big leaguer he traded, besides walk-year guys.

Unless Skaggs or Heaney are somehow so awful that they become non-tender candidates, they aren’t going anywhere.

If they’re good enough to be worth trading, they’re too good to trade. Trades of good, established major leaguers are almost always for prospects, which makes no sense for the Angels if they plan to win in 2020.

Ohtani, Skaggs, Heaney, Canning will all be on the 2020 rotation depth chart. If they’re going to trade anyone, it would be someone like Barría, Peña, Suarez, Sandoval, in a deal for a more established starter like Stroman or Ray.

Why were the Yankees scouting Skaggs and Heaney last July if Eppler wasn’t open to trading them? If it was definitive he was not trading them, I’m sure the Yankees of all teams would have known.

  5. $100 million for Simmons’ age 31-35 years?

Bogaerts got $120 million for his age 27-32 seasons, with $20 million vesting option for age 33.

I think a 3 year extension for ~$45 million (after the $15 million he’s set to make in 2020) plus a 4th year $15 million option is more realistic.

Maybe something around Luis Castillo and Eugenio Suarez from CIN but that would obviously cost a lot more than Adell.

If the Reds begin to tear the team down, I think this may be something worth exploring.

What would it take to get both? Adell, Barria, Jackson, Suarez?

An example is Alex Kiriloff (sp?) who is like 9th on their list. Good player but to rank him that high seems a bit absurd.

He was who I was thinking of when I said that Adell was punished for getting promoted to Double-A. Kirilloff, a 21 year old OF (was 20 during the season) who has yet to reach Double-A got ranked 5 spots better than Adell, who reached Double-A at age 19.

Adell is the only position player with four 60 grade tools (per MLB Pipeline) not in the top 10.

  8. Greinke is owed $104.5 million from the Diamondback. $95.5 million after the $9 million in signing bonus still owed by them.

If Arizona covered the $2 million trade assignment bonus + $15 million more, and we only need to send back a package of Jose Suarez + Brennon Lund, would you do it?

    2019-2021: $21 million per year

2022-2026: $17.5 million total (After $15 million from Arizona)

”3 year” / $80.5 million is much more intriguing with money deferred this way.

I don’t think Arizona will eat anymore money without receiving more from the Angels in return.

  9. I don’t believe it’s been noted on here, but part of Greinke’s salary is deferred to 2022-2026. He only receives $21 million per year through 2021.

“...the deal includes salaries of $31 million in each of the first three seasons, $31.5 million in 2019 and $32 million in each of the final two years. But he will receive $21 million of the money during each season, with the remainder deferred.”
