Suarez could barely get out of the 4th inning until something clicked in August. I think he's fine, but I don't like the idea of him as our #5 and counting on him consistently. Him as #6 changes the quality of our rotation

Suarez started throwing a slider. Shifted a bunch of his curveball usage to a slider, and the results were much better

Starting pitcher: Carlos Carrasco, Alex Cobb (club option), Yu Darvish, Jack Flaherty, Lucas Giolito, Sonny Gray, Clayton Kershaw, Lance Lynn (club option), Kenta Maeda, Tyler Mahle, Germán Márquez, Miles Mikolas, Frankie Montas, Jordan Montgomery, Charlie Morton (club option), Aaron Nola, Jake Odorizzi, Shohei Ohtani, Eduardo Rodriguez (opt-out), Hyun Jin Ryu, Max Scherzer (opt-out), Luis Severino, Blake Snell, Marcus Stroman (opt-out), Julio Urías, Alex Wood.

This is why I'd probably punt on a multi-year deal for Eovaldi now.  I think a number of those guys are better than him, and if Ohtani leaves, I think there are various options we could pivot to that would be solid options.

Agreed. Kluber/Cueto make too much sense at this point

    Surprised they aren’t pursuing Cueto?

Similar age and 2022 stats to Kluber

Averaged 6 1/3 innings per start, 158 innings in 24 starts and 1 relief outing.

Kluber made $8 million in 2022.

Cueto made $4.2 million in 2022.

Either would be a good one year signing and slotted in #4 spot, with Silseth hopefully ready after 2023.

Ohtani, Sandoval, Anderson, Kluber/Cueto, Detmers, Suarez

Kluber/Cueto would both make sense. No draft pick, as opposed to Eovaldi.

I think they add a starter and a reliever

    Just popped into this thread.

This is sort of a pointless thing, but since I'm bored today, here's my 2 cents...

SPs (5): Anderson, Sandoval, Detmers, Suarez, Silseth. Next up: Davidson, Canning, Daniel

    Ohtani (1): Ohtani

RPs (8): Estevez, Loup, Tepera, Quijada, Herget, Barria, Wantz for the top 7, and then you can have whoever you want out of Devenski, Webb, Holder, Warren, Marte, Ortega, Garza and C-Rod. (And don't be surprised if it's Lucas Luetge, who got DFA'd yesterday by the Yankees.)

(Davidson is out of options, so I'm not sure what to do with him. Maybe he gets the 6th spot in the rotation or maybe he's a reliever. Or maybe he's a reliever who makes spot starts. Or maybe they DFA him. Who knows?)

C (2): Stassi, O'Hoppe. (Next up Thaiss, who is out of options)

IF (7): Walsh, Fletcher, Rengifo, Drury, Urshela, Rendon, Velazquez. (next up Lamb, Soto)

OF (3): Trout, Ward, Renfroe (next up Adell, Moniak)

You'll note that I am not putting a true 4th OFer on the team because the Angels keep talking about how so many of their IFers can also play the corner OF (pretty much every single one of them except for Rendon and Velazquez), so I am thinking that's what they're going to do. I think they could really use Velazquez for his speed and defense, more than having someone like Adell or Moniak as a 4th OF. Also, lets those guys play every day at AAA.

Maybe Barrera instead of Velazquez, but like the rest

Urias violated it as well, but those situations were a bit different from one another.

I think the Dodgers will assuredly move on from him, but maybe they will find someone who will toss a few mil their direction in the form of a trade of some kind.  The bottom line seems to always be the #1 priority for organizations, so maybe they are holding out for someone to make that offer.

But I would still say the most likely thing we'll see is they DFA him in the upcoming days.  They likely knew exactly what the penalty would be, which is why they signed Syndergaard + Martinez for exactly what they did.

Could see a smaller market team take a flier on him

Padres’ shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was kept off the diamond for the entirety of the 2022 season following an off-field wrist injury and a PED suspension. Fast forward to this offseason, San Diego made a big splash by signing all-star shortstop Xander Bogaerts to an 11-year deal. If the Padres decide to move Tatis, plenty of teams could be interested in adding a potential franchise player to their infield. Bookies.com has developed hypothetical odds as to which team Fernando Tatis Jr. could end up on for the 2023 season.
