jshep got a reaction from SlappyUtilityMIF in Angels Acquire Huston Street
Of course this thread has shown the opposite is true too.
As soon as the thread was announced, there were people rushing to nitpick every single flaw each of the prospects we gave up has to justify that they really aren't that good.
It was a decidedly different tone than when those guys were still Angels' prospects.

And there was room for both of them. Relievers aren't like 2nd baseman or whatever where the presence of one negates the need for another.

if the other team's 3-4-5 is coming up in the 7th, put in the best reliever whether it's Smith, Street, or matching up with Thatcher

Wow, just giving away Sean Burnett's # already.
Ice cold, Angels.

Well not to get involved in a debate on the merits of that trade again, but Corbin would have been nice to have last year as well as for next year and the future.

jshep got a reaction from SlappyUtilityMIF in Ian Stewart DFA'd
At least I'll always have that Ian Stewart foul ball I caught in Spring Training.
Cooperstown has been trying to get it from me, but no way.

Rondon is the big one in my opinion. I can deal with the other three.
And whether or not the minor leaguers become anything is only part of the equation. It's that they have value right now, regardless of the future. The idea of trading ASSETS for a reliever and minor leaguer is why people are upset.

People keep saying "prospects are just prospects," but every guy is at one point "only" a prospect. Imagine if two years ago we had traded Calhoun and Richards for a relief pitcher with a year of club control left.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but f it.
I can't blame him for breaking his self-ban tonight. This shit is dumb as hell.

There's no sane way to call this deal a success for the Angels.
1. Lindsey will probably be nothing more than a league average 2B. That's it, but he's under control for 6 more years.
2. Alvarez is going to be a closer in 2 years. The Angels needed a closer now apparently, even though Smith has been untouchable.
3. Rondon is going to be much better than most people realize. I feel safe comparing him to Alcides Escobar. That's a good freaking SS.
4. Elliot Morris has beautiful mechanics and the stuff to compete in a major league rotation. In 2 years, he'll be a workhorse back end starter.
This was literally, the stupidest trade for a RP that I can remember. Unless Street ensures the Angels don't have to chance it in a one game playoff, the Angels may have just given away 4 of their top 15 prospects for little reason at all. Even if you don't like the uncertainty of prospects and want the Angels to win-now, there's a pretty good chance the Angels bullpen was already equipped to carry them as far as they need to go in the playoffs, as evidenced by tonight's 16 inning victory.
Even the few Padres fans out there are in shock over how much they got for Huston Street. For that price, the Angels should've got Tyson Ross or Ian Kennedy is return as well.
That's as bad as it gets as far as RP trades go.

Garrett Wilson â€@Garrett_MWAH
You can keep quoting Angels prospects that became a bust all you want. That's not the point. The issue is the value at the time of the trade

I wouldn't have dealt Jose Rondon for two months (plus an option) of Huston Street straight-up.

whoa. quite the bounty for a relief pitcher. Albeit a very good relief pitcher.
It's not that I am overly convinced that any of the guys we gave up are sure fire major league contributors, but I think the mistake people make in evaluating a trade is just looking at how the traded players perform in the future. You have to look at system depth, redundancy, and current market value.
That's a fair share of organizational value and redundancy you just gave up. Value that could have been used in other areas if need be.
This is a very high risk trade. One that I am not overly fond of because the short term gain could be minimal even if the player acquired does well. To me, anything less than a deep playoff run this year and the trade wasn't worth it.
I sure as hell hope it works.

I dislike this trade as much as anyone, but I'm not going to call Street a postseason gas can and insist he not pitch in the playoffs based on 9 innings

So this first: Glad our MLB bullpen is improved, it will help.
Secondly: We really screwed the pooch in this trade.

So I'm not one to wish an injury on any player, but if Street were to tragically f up his elbow right now...

For the rest of this season. This bullpen is going to need to be rebuilt AGAIN this offseason and there's now less to do that with.
