  1. His ERA is almost 4.00, which is about where it was last year (non-small sample size).....you don't pay $75 million for a #4 or 5 starter....
  2. His 5.64 ERA isn't much better than Blanton's....
  3. 3.5 million guaranteed.....the rest is roster, performance incentives.... http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/11/angels-to-sign-ryan-madson.html
  4. My thought exactly....maybe not a great player but his numbers last year don't add up to a waiver claim either......
  5. Not sure where our bigger need is right now....last fall, when the trade was made, it was probably in the rotation...now, we're goshawful in both the pen and the rotation....on the whole, I'd probably still rather have Hanson than Walden but it's pretty much a push....although both were big time prospects, neither is anything to get excited about right now....I guess you have to give Hanson a pass until he gets back in the saddle....
  6. Since we're slipping deeper into the abyss, Downs would be somebody you dump at the trade deadline....veteran guy you're probably not going to re-sign....would like to see Madsen get back and show something....he'd be a good trade chip also....
  7. Desperate time usually make for bad trades....I'm not sure we shouldn't ride this out and start the long, slow road back the right way---no more crazy FA signings or rental deals...that said, if a potential trade makes some sense, now or whenever, you do it....
  8. Sometimes the young guys pan out, sometimes they don't....Haren trade, they have....Kazmir, not so much....Kazmir was a waste of money but the players haven't come back to haunt us...Greinke, we don't know yet but Segura looks very good so far....
  9. Good question and impossible to answer, of course....but, beyond Stoneman, I've thought a lot lately about losing Adenhart in 09 and Kendrys' injury in 10 and how those totally tragic and freakish things altered this franchise....losing Adenhart resulted in a very bad trade for Kazmir and maybe altered the rotation to an extent even today...we'll never know how good Adenhart would have been, obviously, but you had the feeling that he was about to blossom into at least a middle of the rotation guy....and then Kendrys in 2010, when he gets hurt, is an absolute middle of the order monster....not sure he'll ever be close to that again and I'm not sure we've totally gotten past the effect of that injury....do we sign Pujols if Kendrys is healthy and mashing in 2011 the way he was in 09 and through his injury in 10? Maybe not....all food for thought...
  10. Getting Weaver back will help, maybe Madsen and Jepsen too....but heck, the starting staff, outside of Weaver, has been about what you'd expect and we're still terrible.....Blanton wasn't bad last night and, after a couple of clunkers early, has been his usual mediocre self....same with Hanson and Vargas....CJ has been a wild and inconsistent 6 inning guy but that's probably who he is at this point....bullpen has been awful but do Madsen and Jepsen straighten that out? Maybe, but enough to get us back in the playoff hunt? Wouldn't bet on that.....
  11. Obviously you don't remember Disney and Jackie Autry....complaining about overspending? Wow, what goes around comes around...
  12. I recall that Salmon was good to go in spring training when he had off season surgery....so I would guess 3/4 months, maybe less...
  13. Not sure rest is the answer at this point, since this appears to be a reoccuring problem....he was struggling in spring training after an offseason of rest so I wonder if it wouldn't be better to have the surgery now, get him healthy for 2014, and not have it come up again....give Conger an extended look at DH (it's pretty obvious he can't catch), Trumbo at 1b....
  14. Summer sale is a little premature, it's not even June yet....but you always start with potential free agents....Vargas, Madsen (if he gets healthy)....we have 2 unmovable contracts (Albert, Hamilton) and I wouldn't think we consider moving Weaver...maybe CJ, but he looks like a back of the rotation guy right now, you'd have to eat a ton of money....Downs maybe, but he stays hurt and is ineffective... Aybar or Howie would start a real remaking of the team...let's see where we are in June....
  15. You didn't include the speculation part (from another poster)...but that's ok....carry on....
  16. I don't know either but I did speculate, which is what this thread appeared to be all about until you jumped in....
  17. Methinks he is butthurt on a Monday....and no, you didn't offer any insight...stating that Scioscia was calling out underperforming pitchers is like the captain of the Titantic saying we're sinking because we hit an iceberg.....I believe we all know, Scioscia included, that the pitchers are underperforming...the question was why is he suddenly using descriptive words like "terrible' and "absolutely awful"....that's new....any criticism of Napoli was a mild nudge compared to that....
  18. Scioscia doesn't call out players, at least those not named Jose Guillen....the subject of the thread was why now? Lots of interesting speculation in this thread, given our present circumstances...however, your post didn't offer any insight, which isn't unusual, and I wanted to make sure you realized that....
  19. Your post had no particular context with this thread....Scioscia just doesn't throw people under the bus, period....your post was a side bar that had no particular relevance to that point....
  20. And when exactly has he ever done that before? He's always been a "Protect your players" manager and that's ok....it's not his MO to call anybody out.....
  21. Ding, ding, ding...we have a winner....that's what I took from it too....it is so unScioscia like that it's hard not to read something under the surface from it....
