If Calhoun struggles, it's a $14m black hole on the bench with Adell then playing RF. Adell is contingency.
If Calhoun isn't here, and Adell struggles...what's the contingency? That's the difference.

So again, this all comes down to money - the argument isn't really about production, long-term or short-term.

That's why I keep coming back to thinking there is a chance Calhoun stays - because I really do think the Angels could fill their needs this offseason with the non-Calhoun $36m and the handful of prospects they're comfortable dealing from.

The last few years we've been ruined by the lack of depth, the lack of or inflexibility to deal with unexpected circumstances, and we've fortunately been able to survive these a little better each year because the contingencies are getting better.
There are more layers of depth. More options to turn to. It's saved our infield this year. It just doesn't sit well with me that we want to knowingly thin out some contingency just because Adell's gonna be great and another $14m would be cool. Especially when spending money isn't really Eppler's thing.

It's not ideal...but if we let Calhoun go and Adell struggles...for short time, you can move Fletch to RF, with and let La Stella, Simmons and Rengifo play in the IF.

Again, not an ideal situation, but a decent back up plan...to go along with someone like Goodwin or Herm.

This guy called Wilson one of the worst picks in the draft because the Angels need pitching....   So he believes drafting for need is a thing in MLB.

Can someone with more knowledge of the minors and draft answer me this:

Wilson, was picked at #15, MLB had him ranked as the #21 prospect in the draft...

I know pitching is a need, but how is this one of the worst picks in the draft??  Bleacher report is the only place I have seen that Wilson was not a good pick.

    Will Wilson | Rank: 21

School: North Carolina StateYear: JuniorPosition: SSAge: 20 DOB: 07/21/1998Bats: R Throws: RHeight: 5'11" Weight: 175 lb.Previously drafted: Never

    Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

For the second time in five years, North Carolina State could have a shortstop selected in the first round. Wilson isn't as tooled up as Trea Turner or the other top shortstops in a deep college crop, but he has a high floor as a steady up-the-middle defender with surprising power. He was one of four players to hit 10 or more homers in Atlantic Coast Conference games in 2018, joining Giants No. 2 overall pick Joey Bart, Astros first-rounder Seth Beer and Blue Jays second-rounder Griffin Conine.

Though he's not physically imposing, Wilson has quick hands and deceptive strength that give him at least above-average raw power. A right-handed hitter, he has a knack for putting the barrel on the ball. He shows the ability to hit for average and power, and he has done a better job of drawing walks this spring despite his aggressive approach.

The biggest knock on Wilson is his below-average speed. Most big league shortstops run better than that, though some scouts think he can stay at the position because he has quick actions and hands. Others believe his speed and average arm will land him at second base, where he played as a freshman and still would profile well offensively.

I am going to remind you guys that hitting the other way and bunting are two different things.

First, bunting. With no strikes, the 3B is normally playing is his standard position, with the other 3 infielders on the other side. Bunting is hard now because it’s got to be a very good bunt. With a strike, the 3B might move more toward SS because now if you bunt, you risk it going foul and putting yourself in a 2-strike hole. Obviously, after there are 2 strikes they worry even less about it. When Calhoun bunted against the Twins the other day, it was because the 3B was shifted with no strikes. All of Calhoun’s bunt hits have come with no strikes. La Stella had a bunt hit with one strike, but obviously he’s a way better 2-strike hitter than Calhoun so he wasn’t as worried about it going foul.

As for hitting the other way, that’s very tough. The reason most guys face shifts is because most guys can’t do it. It’s not just hitting the ball the other way, but hitting it on the ground the other way, which goes counter to two things you’re normally trying to do. Most balls hit the other way are not hit hard, and if those are in the air they are still outs.

If you don’t like shifts, you need to fill your roster with David Fletchers instead of Kole Calhouns, rather than trying to make Kole Calhoun hit like David Fletcher.

Of course, Calhoun has a higher OPS than Fletcher right now (797 to 787) because Calhoun hits for more power, which is because he tries to drive the ball instead of just poking it anywhere.

For me, it boils down to hitting the ball where its pitched.

If you get a pitch on the inner half...hit it hard...it you get a pitch on the outside half of the plate...drive it the other way.  To many players take that outside pitch, and roll it over for an easy ground ball out.

As much as we all wanted him gone, the one thing Hatcher preached was driving the ball to the biggest part of the field...that is a lost art form.

Just my guess, but I think Pujols retires after next year, or there's some sort of a buy-out that occurs where he's still paid in full amount, but he transitions to a front office role,

2019: LF Upton, CF Trout, RF Calhoun, 1B Pujols/Walsh platoon.  DH Ohtani.  3B La Stella/Fletcher.  Jo Adell and Brandon Marsh are in AA, Matt Thaiss is in AAA.  Jordyn Adams and Kevin Maitan in A Ball.

2020: LF Upton, CF Trout, RF Adell, 1B platoon of Thaiss and Ward.  3B La Stella/Fletcher, DH platoon of Ohtani and Pujols.  This is Pujols' swan song.  We use AAA as a holding tank for MLB ready talent that's not getting PT in the majors, like Brandon Marsh and Jahmai Jones.  Jordyn Adams and Kevin Maitan in Advanced A Ball.

2021: LF Adell, CF Trout, RF Marsh, 1B Justin Upton/Matt Thaiss.  3B Matt Thaiss/Fletcher.  DH Ohtani/Upton.  Jordyn Adams and Kevin Maitan in AA.  Jahmai Jones is traded.

2022: LF Adell, CF Trout, RF Marsh, 1B Upton/Thaiss, 3B Thaiss/Fletcher, DH Ohtani/Upton.  Jordyn Adams and Kevin Maitan in AAA, also embarking into the majors.

    2023: LF Trout, CF Adams, RF Adell, 1B Marsh/Thaiss, 3B Maitan/Thaiss, DH Ohtani/Maitan.

Do you  think AP continues after 2019 with the reduced playing time.

He has gotten 38 AB;s over the last fifteen days. (I'm not arguing with that), just wondering if he can handle a bench/part time role.

Anyone know why the Angels went with Stratton over Barria to begin with? I know his peripherals last year were limp, but it is rather unusual that a 22 year old who produced a 3.41 ERA in 26 starts the previous year starts the season in the minors. His 4.58 FIP speaks more of a #4-5 starter, but I have a feeling Barria is going to out-pitch his peripherals and be at least a good #4, if not borderline #3. At the least he should be better than Stratton.

Anyone know why we dumped Shoe, just to trade for Stratton?

  6. One of the doubles was against the Cincinnati Reds, a team Adell cheered for while growing up nearby in Louisville, Ky. As Adell pulled into second, Reds star first baseman Joey Votto, trailing him to the bag, patted him on the behind and said: “Attaboy, Jo-Jo.”

“I thought it was the coolest thing ever,” Adell recalled. “I grew up watching this guy play. Just that slight bit of encouragement was really cool. In the moment, I didn’t really think about it, then later I got on the bus and thought, ‘Joey Votto thought it was a good hit.’ That experience was pretty awesome.”

This is pretty cool...both by Votto and Adell's reaction.  Playing against your childhood team, and their star player is giving you some love.
