    Good stuff, @CartiHalos

I've been around baseball long enough to know that anything can happen in this great game. I'm pretty sure the Orioles and D-Backs going into last season were projected to win around 75-82 games, and alas, but of them were playoff teams.

For sure, there's a lot of unrealized talent on this roster so with a couple big jumps we could be right in the thick of things.

I think the most relevant info in that article is:

“The Giants, Red Sox, Cubs and Angels have been tabbed by sources as the finalists for Imanaga”

But Murray said the Angels aren’t really in on Imanaga.

Murray did indeed break the Plesac signing so maybe he has a good source inside the org, but I really just think nobody knows what the Angels are actually up to.

I think if we are expecting Duvall to give us 80-90 games then we are fine and hes a solid depth piece id be happy with but if we are expecting Duvall to play 120-150 games then we are f*cked.

I think ideally if we get him it's because we're spending big on pitching, and he's somewhat in a hybrid platoon where Duvall starts against lefties and some against righties, and Mickey gets his ABs against righties.

    No thank you

Sub .300 career OBP, not many XBHs the past 2 seasons, meh defense, age 35 RHH

No better than a 4th OF at this point

OBP yeah I guess, his career OPS is fine though, he had nearly 50 XBHs in 92 games last year (14 more than Trout did AND Duvall had less PA), average defense is more than some other FA candidates can say, and don't really mind he's 35 if it's a 1 year deal.

You don’t think a team with an adequate offense and a rotation of:

Snell, Burnes, Detmers, Sandoval, Canning, with depth of Anderson and Silseth

    can be a contend-for-the-postseason team?

They can, but this counting on us getting Snell and appropriately filling the holes in our offense that wasn't anything special before we lost our best hitter.  It's possible, but I don't think I would bet on it.

The Angels absolutely do not want to trade away any good young players.

Would anyone be interested in improving the team for 2024 by trading for Burnes by taking in the Yelich contract?

Yelich has five years and $120m remaining ($23.9m per year), and was a 4.1 WAR player last year.

We could all speculate how the details would be worked out but it at least appears that marrying Burnes to Yelich would facilitate someone acquiring Burnes.

Burnes is projected to get about $15m in arbitration.  If he was a free agent, what would the Angels pay him on a one-year contract?  $25m?

If the Angels acquire a pitcher that has $10m in value for 2024, that effectively makes the cost for Yelich 5 years $110m, or $22m per year.  While that isn’t a steal by any stretch, it’s digestible.

The points of criticism for this kind of transaction are surely money related.  But the Angels don’t have many options to improve by other means.

Further, if you had Yelich, that frees up someone like Ward to move in a deal elsewhere to improve the team some other way.

Anyway, it is at least notable that taking the Yelich contract matches up with acquiring Burnes. . . and there isn’t much else to talk about.

In theory I don't hate it, but I think we're not in a position to make the playoffs next year anyway so more than likely Burnes ends up leaving in free agency and we're stuck with 4 more years of overpaying Yelich. It would be nice to just not be overpaying anyone for a change.

I really don't think we signed Luis Garcia for 4 M to not make some significant moves.

    This can't be the plan.

I mean... it could be the plan if there's a potential sale coming.

Reminds me of the 2019-20 Mets maybe. The 2018-19 offseason they were pretty active, with the Diaz trade and some other bigger moves. After 2019, lost Wheeler and only signed a few relievers and back end starters coming off a 3rd place finish. Then, September 2020, sold to Steve Cohen.

    Probably wishful thinking... but......

Giving a guy four years because of good peripherals over 50 innings is the sort of mistake the Angels need to avoid.

If you want to look at his performance over two sets of 3 year (plus covid) samples this is what you get

    19-22 (10 IP Covid)
    178 IP, 1.220 WHIP, 8.0 H/9, 1.6 HR/9, 3.0 BB/9 10.1 K/9, 4.30 FIP
    20-23 (10 IP Covid)
    166 IP, 1.184 WHIP, 7.9 H/9, 1.7 HR/9, 2.8 BB/9 10.7 K/9, 4.22 FIP

    The difference is noise.

He's going to get paid because of the 38 innings he put up in TB last year where he completely outperformed every established level of performance he had.  The question moving forward is whether or not adding the cutter is what finally unlocked him and his performance is repeatable or if it was a hot streak with a new pitch that may not carry over.  That's basically the difference -- he leaned on the cutter and MLB hitters had never seen him throw it before.

Dude was great, but the old adage about RP being volatile is very much in play here.

Very fair assessment. Ideally I wouldn't give him 4 years but that's what the rules I set has him at.  My only fear is having to rely on Garcia or Kolarek in high leverage situations.

Would someone please look at what Stroman did in the second half of last season before we make a mistake?  An ERA of nearly 9 in the second half, when he could pitch at all.  Spend to get Snell for the rotation, and Bellinger for the offense.  Then, if Ward is dealt for another SP, I’d be alright with it.

Still put up a Sub 4 ERA and a 3.5 FIP.  Not sure why half a season would label him as a mistake, especially when he's been, pretty consistently, well above average since 2018 including in 2023.

That would be a great trade for Angels but Red Sox have a surplus of OF right now. Maybe Ward can bring back a starter from Marlins.

Remembered seeing the headline that "Red Sox exploring trades involving outfielders" and didn't realize they were trying to trade THEIR outfielders, haha. Definitely wouldn't work.  Could see Marlins, especially if they're trying to move on from Sanchez.

I hate idea of 4 years on RP who has one good year. Angels tried 2 years deals on Loup and Tepera and that was a disaster. Sign Matt Moore or Chapman on 1 year deals.

I can get behind that, I'm just big on Stephenson because his peripherals make him look built to have a pretty solid stretch. I'm good for just about any form of bullpen that isn't the one we currently have.

I'd also add that Matt Moore essentially only had one good year as a reliever when we signed him, but he was outstanding last year and you're willing to sign him again.  I think Loup and Tepera were the problems, less their contracts.

AJSS and Grissom didn’t do anything at the major league level last season and Grissom is clearly blocked in Atlanta.  Sale still put up a 3.80 FIP in 20 starts last year

Agree Grissom was blocked, I'm just not very big on Kelenic's ability to produce long-term.  Sale was good last year, but still only pitched like 100 innings and he's still aging. I guess it's just a collection of players I'm big on (AJSS, Grissom) and players I'm not (Sale, Kelenic), but I'm not an exec so I might just be letting my biases show.
