Just about every team has a Suarez/Barria combo these days so focusing on the #6 pitcher in the rotation is pretty narrow vision. The Angels issue with pitching has never been the production out of the #5/6 spot in the rotation.
Where the Angels fall over is really in the #2/3 spot. This is the rental pitchers that were risk reward choices simply because the "Ace" acquisition has always been a fight to pay more than anyone else and always getting out bid. So having no #1 option their targets fell off the table quickly and to be honest, the team has been a patchwork around the diamond and outfield outside of three players, Trout, Upton and Fletcher. We are still waiting for Rendon to show up.
Now that there seems to be solutions to the fielding positions (still need a SS next season) the focus can be on a Guasman or Desclafani or one of a number of other arms through trade or free agency. Going deep financially for pitching without a team behind them would have been a waste of resources. This is where final roster building comes into play, where starting pitching becomes relevant in terms of wins.
Otherwise known as the Eppler recipe that is rather ironic given his eye for talent at other positions. So, if Minasian doesn't want to get sacked as well...he would be well-served IMO to adopt a Costanza-like "opposite strategy" next season & sign a solid #2 & a #3 to give this team the best chance to succeed/compete/win next season. Not to mention it would help to break their perennial .500 cycle (that has/continues to plague this team) & would certainly/hopefully be a plus when the bats (sadly...more times than not) are at a minus.

Final Scorecard: The Angels signed 19 of the 20 players they drafted (with the lone exception being Texas Christian RHS Marcelo Perez)

From the other tweets I've read...some are suggesting he could take a year off or go play Independent ball.

25-year old Janson Junk was drafted by the Yankees in the 22nd round of the 2017 MLB draft and has done well so far in his career through his time in the Yankees’ minor league system. Since 2017 he is 16-15 combined in the minor leagues with a 3.72 ERA, one save, and 230 strikeouts over the course of 254.1 innings pitched.
Junk spent the 2021 season with Double-A Somerset where he has a 1.78 ERA and 4-1 record over the course of 14 games played and 65.2 innings pitched. He has recorded 68 strikeouts this season with Somerset. He was the No. 27 prospect on New York’s Top 30 prospects list before being traded to the Angels.
Pinstriped Prospects’ own Matt Kardos recently did an exclusive interview with Junk in which they discussed how Junk was an “under-the-radar” prospect coming into the 2021 season. That mantra seemed to change this season as Junk was named the Double-A Northeast League’s pitcher of the Month in June. Most recently after that, in the last 11 games he has pitched for Somerset, Junk had a 1.46 ERA.
Junk was a prospect took pride in working hard and he discussed with Kardos the work he put in this offseason to prepare to be the best athlete possible in 2021. Checkout the full interview with Junk on pinstripedprospects.com.
Peguero, 24, has been with the Yankees organization since 2016. He has split the 2021 season between High-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset. Combined between High-A and Double-A, Peguero has a 4-1 record and a 2.23 ERA. He has 57 strikeouts over the course of 44.1 innings pitched.
While Peguero isn’t a prospect many hear about, the 2021 season appeared to a be a breakout season for the 24-year old. He’ll look to keep that momentum going as he transitions with Junk to the Angels’ minor league system.

Well boys...I'm just gonna call this game given that the A's have an insurmountable 1 run lead. Which this team can't possibly make up in 3 innings...

Minasian is making judgements as he should. No reason to doubt him plus he hasn’t quit yet.
Just as long as he doesn't "dipoto the bed" in doing so...

So who should have pitched?
I would love to tell you that answer, but, the person's whose job it is to provide it is the same individual who has made some absolutely boneheaded calls with regards to the pitching all season. Of which, tonight, was just another example of, given that each is a known liability that points to a odd lack of post-season planning as well!

I think we are all expecting too much. The Angels just used 2 pitchers with an era of over 6 and now a rookie with no mlb experience. Doesn’t seem like the game is that important to them.
It's just a sad yet further indictment on Maddon & his mind-set. As, seemingly, it's more important to him that his faith be rewarded (regarding 2 players who won't even be on the roster next season) even if it costs whatever chance they have/had at the post-season...

Total domination by Montas.
How many months before Trout, Rendon, and Walsh return? Next year maybe??
Of the above options...it's sad that next year is all we have to look forward to at this point...

Astros claimed INF Robel Garcia off waivers from the Angels.
Garcia was designated for assignment last week. The 27-year-old infielder can hold his own at several defensive positions and could offer some value in a super-utility role moving forward.

Yeah, and while Minasian is being criticized for his choices, he does seem to be aggressive in trying to improve the fringes of the roster. A lot of the little moves he's made - Lagares, Schebler, the relievers, etc - seem geared towards providing a layer of depth in AAA.
Some will argue that this was Eppler's approach too, and that's largely true, but in the end, it is the approach a lot of GMs take. The deciding factor in their success is how good they are at picking those players and helping them develop. The Dodgers pluck guys like Taylor, Muncy, etc off the scrap-heap and turn them into legit studs. We'll see how Minasian's choices fare. Eppler's undoing wasn't that a number of his choices were mediocre - it's that they just failed spectacularly so (Harvey, Cahill, Teheran, etc).
While I haven't been excited about some of Minasian's choices, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now and see how things turn out as the year progresses.
Not that it may prove significant...but in addition to his time at 2B, Robel Garcia also has some experience in both corners of the outfield...

A lefty reliever with possible upside...anyone?

Yeah, he's basically free. He's not coming off an injury, he's not looking to rebound. He's a guy who's been historically decent -- nothing special really, not someone to get excited about but a guy that stands a good chance to help a team. Dude is basically the best version of Noe Ramirez only he can actually start if needed.
Yes...his flexibility is/will be definitely a plus. Which, again...kudos to Minasian for his research. As with a few more of these type of signings (including Schebler as well), he may well escape the comparisons to Eppler. Who, himself...did have some success with this strategy &, likely, would have been better served following as opposed to the high-priced hope he pinned on the likes of Harvey, Cahill & Teheran...

It is strange the Angels signed a relief pitcher who, by all accounts, is pitching well.
It is strange but it's even more odd that the Diamondback didn't feel he fit into "their long-range plans". But...kudos to Minasian for doing his homework. As these types of stories/situations are out there (like Carl Edwards Jr. who just signed with the Braves) that make terrific sense to sign to minor league deals.

There are two Javy Guerras, but one of them is an IF. Wonder if he misspoke and meant Junior Guerra who is a pitcher and is a FA?
You are correct sir...he did misspeak. But, none-the-less...the signing is intriguing...
Angels signed RHP Junior Guerra to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
The 35-year-old right-hander was released by the Diamondbacks in November after posting a 3.04 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 21/15 K/BB ratio over 23 2/3 innings during the 2020 season. Since moving to the bullpen in 2019, he has compiled a 3.44 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 107 1/3 innings in 97 appearances. He should have a decent shot at landing a middle relief role in the club's Opening Day bullpen. 10:37 am (EST)

Apparently he & Callaway are not fans of one another. Now...if you'll excuse me (in keeping with the cheapness of this organization) I'm going to go & put my head into an Easy Bake oven...

This is what distresses me the most. Which, I'm sure has been mentioned already, but...given Minasian's staff of supposed "top men" (that Eppler never had) is it not odd that there appears to be no obvious benefit from it this season? I mean, from the Angels current record (and likely finish) one might well think that Eppler was still in charge & find it rather shocking that Perry & his brain-trust have failed to ID/produce better starting/relief free agents/minor league signings given their combined knowledge/experience.
