  1. The team was playing confidently until the sweep by Texas this past May where, it seems, they completely lost the early season mojo/belief in themselves/their abilities that they had & were playing with. Which then lead to the 14-game losing streak & the firing of Maddon which, by the looks of things, has demoralized this team & has all but crushed their competitive spirit. So now, similar to Maddon, who was more "moonbeams & rainbows" than an intelligent manager...now Minasian wants the team to, again, embrace the healing powers of "good vibes"...is that right?

    That isn’t happening.

Just offering an opinion as if Arte were to create such a position his preference would likely (and sadly) be his pal La Russa anyway (should he & the White Sox part company that is)

Yea, I don’t think they bump him down, but they could hire someone that comes in as a POBO which in essence bumps him down without actually bumping him down.

I think that Jeff Luhnow would be an excellent choice if they go this route. Assuming he would do it of course.

  4. I picked Minasian whose firing would indeed be premature. But given the sentiments expressed by Club president John Carpino (before Minasian was hired) where he acknowledged (despite their big budgets & Trout) that the Halos are simply "not winning games" and that "something is not right in our organization as things, here, aren't working".

So with this admission, it seemed clear that whoever they hired (between Minasian & Hollander, the VP & assistant GM in Seattle who worked under Stoneman) they expected this "something" to not only be identified but corrected immediately. Especially with Carpino's belief they already possessed "the base of a strong team" & were "not that far away" from contending.

So along with managing only 77 wins in 2021 & the prospect of finishing even worse this year (plus somehow, stupidly, allowing his "urgency" in getting back to post-season play to be defined by the likes of Wade, Velazquez, Lagares, & a host of DFA'd cast-offs), I think he gets the hook once they have been officially eliminated from contention.

FWIW, way back when, he used to have a really high leg kick and he threw harder.  But the Braves basically reworked his delivery to try to get more out of his curve and the velocity cratered.  So, unless the Angels believe he can be reshaped into something different, not sure this isn't more than wishing.

Well maybe they can help him with his delivery As, if I recall, Minasian identified some changes he thought Thor could make in his delivery too. Which, you know...could be a new career for Perry once he's fired lol...

The Padres designated Kyle Tyler for assignment Sunday.

Tyler has been a fixture on the transaction wire throughout the season, as Sunday marks the sixth occasion in which he's been DFA'd dating back to spring training. He'll be exposed to waivers once again but will remain in the San Diego organization if he goes unclaimed by MLB's other 29 clubs.

Considering the roster, I think Nevin is doing OK.  If we make a move for a starter, and a SS, the season might yet turn out OK.

If not, Erstad would be a great choice for a manager.  It doesn't feel like there has been the urgency to win since Scioscia left.

LOL...except for their comments about doing all they can to reach the post-season this year to appease both Trout & Othani. As with the former already committed...Fatassian is going to have to sell the latter on whoever the next hire is to get him to resign...

The stuff with the pitching staff is cyclical. They'll bounce back eventually--but these catastrophic losses are not good for their mentality, and a big part of baseball is mental.

I hate to say it, but we need a healthy Fletcher (the one that used to hit well). Velasquez has looked sloppy recently, and his pitch recognition has regressed to that of a blind man. Rendon is always injured so he's a non-factor, so maybe they take a gamble and put Rengifo in 3B once Fletch is back. Still not promising.

IMO...the sweep by the Rangers a few weeks ago really wrecked the confidence of the Angels staff. As, prior to that series, neither Thor nor Othani had been rocked that hard which I think has/is still bothering them.

DH Trout in Game 1. Give Ohtani the game off. Play Rendon and Ward because they both just had a day off 2 days ago (Ward had 4 days off).

Trout in CF in Game 2, Ohtani DH. Play Rendon and Ward again because they had a fucking day off 2 DAYS AGO.

AHHHHH. Maddon is literally the most frustrating manager. This team is doing well in spite of him.

I think Minasian is frustrated by him/his idiot calls as well. Which is why, I believe, 1 of the FO guys took a spot on Maddon's staff to try to save him from himself.

  10. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/03/angels-sign-cesar-valdez-to-minor-league-deal.html

The Angels have announced their signing of right-handed pitcher César Valdez to a minor league contract. The deal includes an invitation to Major League Spring Training camp.

Valdez heads to camp looking to land a job with a growingly deep Angels bullpen. This comes on the heels of back-to-back seasons in Baltimore, where he served as a force in 14 plus innings during the 2020 season. That year’s sharp 1.26 ERA came with an unsustainable zero home runs allowed however, and the right-hander’s ERA ballooned up to 5.87 in 46 innings (39 appearances) last season after serving up eight home runs. Valdez’s home run prevention abilities always figured to take a step back, particularly when he’s equipped with a fastball that averages just 85mph.

Valdez, who turns 37-years-old today, was designated for assignment by the Orioles at the end of last season and ultimately elected free agency. It makes sense that LA is taking a flier on the well-traveled Valdez, however. Despite last season’s rough bottom-line numbers, Valdez’s changeup ranked as one of the best in the game. Throwing his signature changeup 75% of the time, Valdez was a pro at getting opposing batters to swing at pitches outside of the zone, ranking in the 99th percentile of the league. Further, an uncharacteristically high .380 batting average on balls in play is likely to blame for some of the pitcher’s struggles. A 3.73 SIERA is the simplest metric to suggest that Valdez has plenty left in the tank.

The Angels are surely hoping for better batted ball luck this season, as Valdez can provide some extra innings in a bullpen that’s tasked with backing up one of the more fragile rotations in the league. Injury concerns and the delicate handling of reigning-MVP Shohei Ohtani should allow Valdez to soak up plenty of innings if he’s able to make the team’s Opening Day roster. Incredibly, Valdez has just north of two years of service time, meaning he can be controlled by the Angels for about as long as they’d like if they wind up catching lightning in a bottle with today’s pact.
