This is what distresses me the most. Which, I'm sure has been mentioned already, but...given Minasian's staff of supposed "top men" (that Eppler never had) is it not odd that there appears to be no obvious benefit from it this season? I mean, from the Angels current record (and likely finish) one might well think that Eppler was still in charge & find it rather shocking that Perry & his brain-trust have failed to ID/produce better starting/relief free agents/minor league signings given their combined knowledge/experience.

Otherwise known as the Eppler recipe that is rather ironic given his eye for talent at other positions. So, if Minasian doesn't want to get sacked as well...he would be well-served IMO to adopt a Costanza-like "opposite strategy" next season & sign a solid #2 & a #3 to give this team the best chance to succeed/compete/win next season. Not to mention it would help to break their perennial .500 cycle (that has/continues to plague this team) & would certainly/hopefully be a plus when the bats (sadly...more times than not) are at a minus.

25-year old Janson Junk was drafted by the Yankees in the 22nd round of the 2017 MLB draft and has done well so far in his career through his time in the Yankees’ minor league system. Since 2017 he is 16-15 combined in the minor leagues with a 3.72 ERA, one save, and 230 strikeouts over the course of 254.1 innings pitched. Junk spent the 2021 season with Double-A Somerset where he has a 1.78 ERA and 4-1 record over the course of 14 games played and 65.2 innings pitched. He has recorded 68 strikeouts this season with Somerset. He was the No. 27 prospect on New York’s Top 30 prospects list before being traded to the Angels. Pinstriped Prospects’ own Matt Kardos recently did an exclusive interview with Junk in which they discussed how Junk was an “under-the-radar” prospect coming into the 2021 season. That mantra seemed to change this season as Junk was named the Double-A Northeast League’s pitcher of the Month in June. I would love to tell you that answer, but, the person's whose job it is to provide it is the same individual who has made some absolutely boneheaded calls with regards to the pitching all season. Of which, tonight, was just another example of, given that each is a known liability that points to a odd lack of post-season planning as well!

It's just a sad yet further indictment on Maddon & his mind-set. As, seemingly, it's more important to him that his faith be rewarded (regarding 2 players who won't even be on the roster next season) even if it costs whatever chance they have/had at the post-season...

Of the above options...it's sad that next year is all we have to look forward to at this point...

Astros claimed INF Robel Garcia off waivers from the Angels. Garcia was designated for assignment last week. The 27-year-old infielder can hold his own at several defensive positions and could offer some value in a super-utility role moving forward. Feb 27, 2021, 5:09 PM ET

Yes...his flexibility is/will be definitely a plus. Which, again...kudos to Minasian for his research. As with a few more of these type of signings (including Schebler as well), he may well escape the comparisons to Eppler. Who, himself...did have some success with this strategy &, likely, would have been better served following as opposed to the high-priced hope he pinned on the likes of Harvey, Cahill & Teheran...

It is strange but it's even more odd that the Diamondback didn't feel he fit into "their long-range plans". But...kudos to Minasian for doing his homework. As these types of stories/situations are out there (like Carl Edwards Jr. who just signed with the Braves) that make terrific sense to sign to minor league deals.

You are correct sir...he did misspeak. But, none-the-less...the signing is intriguing... Angels signed RHP Junior Guerra to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. The 35-year-old right-hander was released by the Diamondbacks in November after posting a 3.04 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 21/15 K/BB ratio over 23 2/3 innings during the 2020 season. Since moving to the bullpen in 2019, he has compiled a 3.44 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 107 1/3 innings in 97 appearances.
