  1. If Cohen signs him next year for $600m/13yrs by the time year 10-13 comes around he will be paying Ohtani less than what he’s paying Verlander/Scherzer today in present value. 13 years ago the $43M he’s paying Scherzer, Verlander would be worth $31M in 2010. Agreeing to pay Ohtani $46M for the backend of his career would be the equivalent to something like $33.5M today. I think Ohtani will just be pitching the last five years of his deal but an equivalent contract even for just the last five years or so would be in line with what Cole/Degrom are getting today. ~$35M/yr and that’s the just backend of the deal.
  2. Machado only needs to beat $150m/5y. He got a $20m signing bonus his first year which is amortized over the life of the contract for accounting purposes. He’s the same age as Bogaerts and the better player so I can’t see him signing for less than him. He prob saw Judge at the same age get a rumored $400m from the padres so he thought as the franchise player he should get as much. He will prob get a ~$325m offer from someone though if he waits.
  3. Arte was always known as one of the most passionate owners who wanted to win, it always struck me as odd that he wanted to sell. I think the emotional letdown of another failed season he reacted in the moment like a fan and once time went by realized he didn’t actually want to leave behind baseball. Yea it sucks we might not get a Steve Cohen type but as long as Arte increases payroll and stops forcing Pujols/Rendon types on his GM I’m gonna just shrug and continue on.
  4. They’d need a 3B if they did that. So we would have to throw in Rendon too…
  5. Rengifo is worth 0.5 according to mlb trade values. We aren’t getting Houck for him. We’re better off keeping him relative to what he’d fetch us anyways.
  6. Nevin knows Sanchez so if he wants him then let's roll. Perry has basically put all the underachievers on notice from last year. Rendon, Fletcher, Walsh, Stassi, Adell, Moniak, Velazquez, etc and brought depth/competition for all of them. The free ride Angels' veterans had in the past where they would be penciled in regardless of performance are over.
  7. that DR team is stacked but I still think the USA is better
  8. Ohtani is an elite pitcher like Degrom, Verlander, Scherzer. Even if his hitting becomes replacement level by 36-37 then he becomes just an ace, and those guys get paid $$ even if they’re barely pitching/injured for a bunch of years which is worst case scenario for Shohei. Aces get paid into their 40s. Also take into account inflation. If Verlander and Scherzer are getting $43M in 2023 by the time 2032 comes around and Ohtani is only a pitcher, $55M in ten years time will be less than what Scherzer is getting now in present value. I think Ohtani gets $600M+ over 12 years from the Mets. He will have multiple $500M+ deals from the Giants, Mariners, Angels and maybe the Dodgers.
  9. I remember Upton being DFA’d paving the way for Adell to being an opening day starter. I also saw him throwing a ball down the first base line instead of home, missing a fly ball at the warning track, and striking out every plate appearance. He definitely didn’t help us win games if anything he hurt us. If he really doesn’t get how bad he’s looked in the majors and that if he was even average he would be in there everyday based on prospect reputation alone then he needs to be told the cold hard facts by management that he’s been horrific when he’s been out there.
  10. Elite defense, petco park murders him. Look at the splits for his away stats plus his defense and there’s potential there. I think the same of cronenworth when I look at his home/away splits. So many hitters have gone there and done poorly. Sign Bauer and I’d do Suarez+Walsh for Kim.
  11. exactly, anyways Bauer has always been disliked by teammates all the back to HS at Hart but it never mattered to much until this incident occurred OFF the field. Clubhouse dynamics are always overrated just like intangibles and leadership were in the past. The dodgers definitely care about PR and image of their brand and having a guy like Bauer would damage that, but for us we are in an ownership transition so the new group won't take any heat. Perry is a dead man walking if he doesn't win this year.
  12. I saw a lot of Padres games and Drury isn't a good defender at 3B/2B, he's worse than Duffy there. Stone hands, no agility. I think he plays a lot of 1B.
  13. platoon and role players are getting 3-4x that amount, no one is signing for $2-$3m that is better than those guys you mentioned
  14. I think we'd be getting the best version of himself... at least on the field. Given what we know of him I think we'd see an extremely motivated, hungry, even angry version of Bauer eager to prove the Dodgers and the rest of MLB wrong. For potentially the league minimum there is no faster way of improving this team to bona vide WS contenders. It's a no brainer if we want to give ourselves the best chance to win the world series in a franchise defining year in many respects. We should also be near the top of his list to play. Same city, can stick it to the Dodgers right up the freeway, fan of Trout/Ohtani. One of the main storylines of MLB is when are we going to see Trout and Ohtani win in the playoffs, it seems like Bauer's style to think of himself as the guy that can make that happen. He's playing for the league min where ever he goes and is gone in a year so I think this is actually perfect if Perry/Nevin can make it happen clubhouse wise and PR wise.
  15. Cohen has FU money if he wants Ohtani he won’t be outbid and it will be up to Shohei. I think he winds up a Met it will be similar to the Cole saga a few years ago. The dodgers and angels will be way behind. The dark horse could be Seattle, they have very little payroll compared to prior years. No state income tax so there offer could be competitive vis a vis the LA/NY teams. If they went Texas Arod 2001 then that’s the only other team I could see in the running.
  16. I wouldn’t hit Rengifo lead off, even when he went on a relative heater power wise in the 2nd half his OBP was below .300. As of right now hit him 6th or 7th and Ward lead off.
  17. Perry has done amazing this offseason given the limited resources we thought we had. The FA contracts have been good value compared to the market too. The trades didn't cost us anything. Let's be honest we can't count on Rendon, whatever he gives us we will take but we need to build a position player squad 13 deep and we have. Ward Trout Ohtani Rendon Renfroe Rengifo Drury O'Hoppe Fletcher Bench: Stassi - C Walsh - 1B/LF Urshela - IF Moniak - OF
  18. I’m gonna sound like a hater but I don’t think Ned Coletti and the staff before Friedman get the credit they deserve. They were the ones that drafted Kershaw, Seager, Joc, bellinger, signed puig, Urias, jansen, JT, and created the top farm system. Friedman inherited all those players and got most of the credit. He’s done well but they were on the up and up even before he showed up.
  19. The market for high end SP is inelastic, doesn't even matter if they barely pitch teams will pay for the upside. Verlander didn't pitch for two years and still got $25M. Even if Ohtani got injured and didn't pitch for a year if he was a FA that offseason some team would still pay $30M for the potential reward next year. Another thing to consider is teams like the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees are gonna be in the post season where players are basically playing for free. Those extra starts and relief appearances need to be factored in to the discussion. How much are those innings worth in the playoffs? Probably a lot more than any other position especially if you can throw a healthy Degrom, Ohtani, Verlander, Scherzer, Cole out there 2-3 times a series and maybe some relief innings too. That's a lot of potential surplus value that people rarely factor into these contracts when teams aren't paying these player's regular season salaries in the post season.
  20. Seems weird though that judge could have ended up getting only $18M more than trea if he accepted the sd offer even with his historic season.
  21. Judge predicted to put up 35.5 WAR by fangraphs over the next decade. Works out to $10M/WAR, the exact same amount $/WAR Betts, Lindor, Turner got too. Seems to be the going rate for the elite position players.
  22. Lol put down the pipe. If we give the Dodgers Ohtani, Rendon, Detmers, Ward, and Bachman for nothing it would be fair value according to mlb trade values.
