At the time of his signing, Hamilton was coming off a great year and was a “feel good story” of someone that had overcome addictions to be a top MLB player. It wasn’t until afterwards that the fans and the organization found out of his back slide into alcohol and substance use again. It depends on the demand for the player. A top FA may get multiple offers from GMs while an agent for a lower tiered FA may have to garner interest among a handful of teams. A good agent will create demand and reach the best contract in his client’s interests.
