  1. This isn't directly tied to the trade deadline, but it's somewhat related...I've just been looking at who'll be newly eligible for the Rule 5 draft next year, meaning the Angels would need to protect them on the 40-man or risk losing them.

In terms of newly eligible Rule 5'ers, I believe it would be high schoolers from the 2020 draft and then any junior college or 4-year college draftees/non-drafted signees from 2021.  So that would be:

    David Calabrese

    Werner Blakely

    Luke Murphy

    Brett Kerry

    Jake Smith

    Ryan Costieu

    Nick Jones

    Mo Hanley

    Eric Torres

    Glenn Albanese

    Mason Erla

    Nick Mondak

If I'm the Angels, I clear out all of Estevez, Strickland, Moore, Garcia, Cimber, and Cisnero by the trade deadline, either by trading or DFA'ing them.  Bring up Joyce and Zuniga (both of whom are already on the 40-man), add Murphy, Nick Jones, and Eric Torres to the 40-man and call them up.  I'd consider Erla, too, but I still think he ultimately won't amount to much, so I wouldn't worry about losing him even if someone did claim him in the Rule 5 draft.  Torres is probably a fringe-y 40-man guy, but I don't see the harm in adding him after the trade deadline and giving him a little bit of MLB experience just to see if he can hack it.  If not, DFA him and risk losing him, just like you would in the Rule 5 draft, anyway.

Of the remaining guys, maybe they give 40-man slots in the off-season to Calabrese, just due to the utter lack of OF depth in the system, even though he hasn't hit at all since they drafted him?  Kerry and Costieu could get spots, too, I guess, depending on other moves they might make.

Trade all of them, ALL OF THEM. Get as many prospects as possible. Tank the rest of the season. That way, after Minasian is fired, the new GM will come in with a blank slate, first or second overall pick of the draft, low payroll  and a bunch of prospects on the farm.

Give it three years and you’re basically the 2024 Orioles.

    1. Not guaranteed 1st or 2nd pick even if they tank, since there's a lottery system now.

    2. Even if they trade Anderson, unless they also trade every single arb eligible person, they're still starting next year with a payroll that'll be comfortably over $100M, given that Trout and Rendon alone combine for about $76M (a little lower in terms of what counts towards luxury tax, but I'm talking actual dollars out the door in '25) and Stephenson is going to collect $11M while he recovers from TJ surgery for part of the season.

    3. The guys they have to trade likely won't get back many high-ceiling prospects, so while they'd certainly improve the overall strength of the system, it's not like they're going to be getting a couple of Jackson Hollidays back in return for Anderson, Ward, etc.

    4. There's almost zero chance that they'd look like the '24 Orioles within three years, given where the farm system is now, and the highly questionable ability of Minasian and staff to draft well.  Even if he gets the heave-ho after this year, he'll still oversee this draft, and has overseen the last few, which have done little to improve the system--and, if anything, have made the system worse.

Those four points aside...I still agree with you that they should trade more or less everyone.  Ha.  I just think it's likely to take longer than three seasons to really get back on track.

  3. From the full/updated article on Cimber:

"He was only one pitch away from getting out that inning,” Manager Ron Washington said. “And I’ve seen him many times make that pitch. Tonight he just didn’t do it. Maybe we have to go back to the drawing board and start putting him in some situations where he can get his game back together. And we might have to pull someone else out of that bullpen and see if they can step up in those situations.”

I know we're going to be in sell-mode, but I would consider looking at both Kopech and Jimmenz of the white-sox if there price is low and right.

Take a shot on Kopech and see if you can figure some stuff out either as a BP arm or try him in a starter rolee.

    Same with Jimenez as DH/

Why would you bother with either?  Kopech only has one year of control left after this year.  And Eloy Jimenez is owed either $35M over the next two years, or $6M in buyouts.  I don't see how either would help the Angels in any way.

DiChiara is back tonight. A K and a HBP so far. Now hitting .228 since his demotion to Inland Empire. Still think he'll probably get cut after this season unless he turns things around.

Update: DiChiara down to .202 since his demotion, with 33 K in 88 plate appearances (and now 229 career K in 151 minor league games).  He turns 25 in July.  Complete and total bust.

I’m right there with ya, I started suggesting that last year. Almost all those arms either were hurt last year and a bunch retired already.

Yep.  And a few of the remaining guys turn 26 (or even 27, in the case of Mason Erla) before the start of next season.  If you're going to draft college pitchers with 19 of your 20 picks, you'd probably hope more than two of them would have made the majors in the fourth season after they were drafted.  Seems like pure dumb luck would have let them find one gem in that mix.
