    Carmen Mlodzinski

    South CarolinaRHP
    Notes:

At this point our highest-ranked players on the board are high schoolers. I could have my pick of the best of the class, whether I wanted to go with an arm (Jared Kelley) or a big bat (Austin Hendrick). Still, I heard great things about Mlodzinski in his first start and I think the top 10 is going to be very college heavy. Just one prep player among the first ten picks seems crazy, but I wouldn’t be shocked at all if it turned out that way.

    BA MLB Mock Draft

    Updated on: 1/13/2020

    10

    Ed Howard

    Mount Carmel (Ill.) HS SS
    Notes:

It’s a weak middle infield class for prep players. There are no shortstops of the caliber of Bobby Witt Jr. or CJ Abrams, but Howard is the cream of the crop and is a standout defender with an uber projectable frame and athleticism most teams love. He’s not the most polished bat, but is mechanically sound and has shown enough flashes for teams to dream on his offensive ability in the future. This could be the first year without multiple high school shortstops selected in the first round since 2006, when none were taken.

Here's my best guess, bearing in mind that it comes eight months in advance of the Draft and much will change between now and June:

    1) Tigers: Spencer Torkelson, 1B, Arizona State
    2) Orioles: Emerson Hancock, RHP, Georgia
    3) Marlins: Austin Martin, 3B, Vanderbilt
    4) Royals: Nick Gonzales, 2B, New Mexico State
    5) Blue Jays: Asa Lacy, LHP, Texas A&M
    6) Mariners: Garrett Mitchell, OF, UCLA
    7) Pirates: Mick Abel, RHP, Jesuit HS (Portland, Ore.)
? Padres: Jared Kelley, RHP, Refugio (Texas) HS
    9) Rockies: Reid Detmers, LHP, Louisville
    10) Angels: Casey Martin, SS, Arkansas

For more on this topic, check out the video at the top of this Inbox. And for some thumbnail scouting reports on the players above, see our top 15 college and high school prospect lists from August.

"Martin has the best power/speed combination in the college ranks, slamming 28 homers in his first two seasons with the Razorbacks while displaying quickness that earns top-of-the-scale grades from some evaluators. His right-handed swing can get too uphill at times when he gets too focused on home runs, and there's a chance he winds up in center field rather than sticking at shortstop."

  4. 10. Angels — Austin Hendrick, OF, West Allegheny HS, Imperial, Pa.

The last time the Angels picked in the top 10, they took Ballard High product Jo Adell with the No. 10 overall pick in 2017. Despite serious swing-and-miss concerns, that selection has looked pretty good for Los Angeles, as Adell now ranks as the No. 2 prospect in baseball. Hendrick isn’t the athlete that Adell—or 2018 first-round pick Jordyn Adams—is, but he has a high ceiling with some of the loudest raw power in the prep class, elite bat speed and plus arm strength. There are some swing-and-miss concerns here, but grabbing the No. 2 prep player in the class and the top-ranked high school bat could wind up being a steal if he hits.
