Players with back injuries rarely get back to 100%, unless the injury is muscle related. From what I understand, Donaldson’s injury was not muscle related. Anyone who has had something like a disc problem can tell you how debilitating it is. Save the money and move on. We don’t have any room on our DL.

Yea, if it's a disc issue...PASS!  Trust me, you do not want someone like me out there with herniated discs!!!  I'll be sitting more than Pujols!

Guy is practically guaranteed to come to the Angels with his fuc*ked back and bat like .230 with 15 homers.  This kind of shit is written in the stars for the Angels.  How many times do we need to see it happen ? They have a cheap decent prospect that they can and should give a shot.  Crazy.

That was with the old manager era!  This is a new beginning!  No more TJ or stupid injuries!!!

Some of the deals people were big on or upset the Angels didn't make and the return on investment so far

    2018

    Jake Arrieta -- 3 years, 75 mil -- 10-11, 3.96 (105 ERA+) 3.1 bWAR
    J.D. Martinez -- 5 years 110 mil -- 1.031 OPS (173 OPS+) 6.4 bWAR Can opt out next year
    Carlos Santana -- 3 years, 60 mil -- .776 OPS (105 OPS+) 1.7 bWAR
    Yu Darvish -- 6 years, 126 mil -- 1-3, 4.95 (87 ERA+)  -0.2 bWAR
    Eric Hosmer -- 8 years, 144 mil -- .720 OPS (99 OPS+) 1.4 bWAR
    Wade Davis -- 4 years 52 mil -- 3-6, 46 saves 4.13  (114 ERA+) 1.1 bWAR
    Lorenzo Cain -- 5 years, 80 mil -- 813 OPS (119 OPS+) 6.9 bWAR
    Alex Cobb -- 4 years, 57 mil -- 5-15, 4.95 (85 ERA+) 1.1 bWAR
    Gregg Holland -- 1 year, 14 mil -- 2-2. 4.66, 3 saves (80 ERA+) -0.2 bWAR  -- dude was released by the team that signed him.
    Jay Bruce -- 3 years 39 mil -- .680 OPS (92 OPS+) -0.4 bWAR
    Tyler Chatwood -- 3 years 38 mil -- 4-6, 5.30 (81 ERA+) 0.0 bWAR
    Lance Lynn -- 1 year, 12 mil -- 10-10 4.77 (92 ERA+) 0.8 bWAR
    Brandon Morrow -- 2 years, 21 mil -- 0-0, 1.47, 22 saves (295 ERA+)1.4 bWAR -- Dude was lights out but only for 30 IP.
    Addison Reed -- 2 years, 16.75 mil -- 1-6, 0 saves, 4.50 (97 ERA+), 0.1 -- wasn't used as closer

These were the bigger names last year -- other than Martinez and Cain (great value), there isn't a lot to cry over -- Arrieta wasn't bad.   If people want to look up individual players and check on who struck gold with cheap deals here's a link to last years MLBrumors' FA tracker https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018-mlb-free-agent-tracker/sort_column-amount__sort_direction-0

Let's hope the Angels avoid the landmines and find some value.

My problem with this type of post is that each player would have very different stats/bWAR if they were on a different team.  You can't guarantee that J.D Martinez would have been the same with a different team or that Darvish would have been hurt if he pitched for a different team.

    I’ll take 3-4.

And 1-2 from average to best/worst.

95 percent of the stuff you guys complain about a) doesn’t matter or b) is the same with all managers.

I hate to break it to you.

I completely disagree with you Jeff.  A manager has the ability to completely motivate or demotivate a team.  He can be the difference between a 20 game win streak or 20 game losing streak.  If you have a manager that doesn't relate to the players or players who are just tired of the same old manager.  That will be a huge difference.  I would say 10+.  I know you have more experience...but I'm right. Whenever I change managers in MLB The Show, it easily affects my team.

Ohtani has accumulated 2.3 WAR as a hitter in his 279 plate appearances.  Assuming he would get approximately 700 plate appearances over the course of a full season, that would amount to about 5.8 WAR as a hitter.  And that's as a DH.  Playing somewhere in the field would likely tack on at least another win which would make him a near 7 win player.

As a pitcher, he accumulated 1.0 WAR over 10 starts in 51.2 ip.  Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I would assume the most he'd pitch in a season would be about 150 innings.  Where he would accumulate about 3.0 WAR.  Importantly, he'd probably end up about where he is now in terms of plate appearances with about 300 and about 2.5 WAR.

So, for the sake of argument, let's call it even.

I'm gonna guess that Ohtani will get the surgery and I am also going to speculate that he will be ready to hit come spring training about six months from now.

Most (including myself) thought that Shohei's arm was well beyond his bat in terms of potential contribution at the major league level but we've seen both to be pretty special.

So at this point, if Ohtani the two way player were healthy, that probably doesn't translate into additional wins above Ohtani the position player.  Certainly, it brings interest to the franchise and what he's capable of is incredible.

But let's be clear.  If Ohtani's bat can be in the lineup next year, there is no downside to the team on the field and the only true negative is to the player as well as perhaps some degree of media value.

As an aside, another important thing to mention is this:  He's 24.  just turned actually.  Making him the second youngest position player on the team behind Mike Hermosillo.  You know what 24 year old players do with more experience?  They get better.

So don't fret Angel fans.  While the two way player novelty of Shohei won't be realized in 2019, it will have almost no impact to the win column and as some have mentioned, provides clarity in terms of off season direction.

I would also like to point out that Eppler slightly cracked open the door of Ohtani playing the field.

How can Ohtani play the field if we won't be able to throw?

There are a lot of youngsters on AW that have not lived through the real pain of being an Angels fan.

Thanks for compliment "Youngsters".  But I'm 40 years young.  I must have blocked those years out.  Been a fan since 86.?

  7. On the bright side, all this losing with definitely give Eppler a reason to let Sosh walk.  There is just no way you resign a manager with 500 record over an 18 year span and 1 championship.

Lots will be changing for 2019.  Everyone just stop complaining about this years team and have some patience.  It can't get any worse...can it?
