This is absolutely true. Today the Dodgers only have to plug holes here and there with expensive contracts. I was thinking more along the lines when the current ownership took over. They spent big bucks to remain relevant while the farm developed.

In a way having Trout handcuffed the club. You can’t tear it down to the foundations like the Astros did when you have the best player in baseball. But you aren’t willing to spend like the Dodgers for a complete roster so you fiddle around the edges and never get anywhere. Probably best to let Ohtani go and wait for a bunch of players we haven’t even drafted yet to lead us to the promised land, unless he want to bet on himself with a mega Sherzer type deal.

Teams like the Braves or Rays either lock up their young stars or let em leave in free agency. The big veteran contracts just seem to be franchise killers.
