  1. There is if the Angels want to improve their broadcasts. There's not if they don't.
  2. If only for a brief time, it's great to hear Daren behind the mic called white hot Halo's action again. I miss Daren's calls. It's nice to hear his voice. I still recall his stories of tooling around the Phoenix area in a Pinto sans AC. Too bad he missed out on calling 2002 by only a season. I hope this is not just a one-off situation but that the Angels can make some room for him in the broadcast booth.
  3. Tonight's "Sunday Night Classic Movie" is The Greatest Show on Earth by Cecil B Demille, starring Charlton Heston and Jimmy Stewart. While many of the young whipper-snappers might think this a lacking movie, I believe this movie may represent the apex of movie making at the time, stuck between the hocky bad acting of the first half of the century and the spectacle of the 1950's cinema. It is most definitely a classic movie in the truest sense of the word. It was a great movie made for the times. It has the great mix of pure entertainment, as well as a moderate storyline, with at least one moment of "OMG, that was totally vulgar, yet in such a subversive manner as to pass the censors of the time!" and another of "And it took how long before that issue was addressed in the court of public opinion?!?". A solid choice for viewing if you don't take ADD meds and can accept the fact that it was made so long ago that the stunts that were performed were actually performed live for the cameras. The fact that the movie was originally presented as a loving tribute to a by-gone era is only enhanced by the fact that the movie itself is now from a by-gone era.
  4. The second the LAPD gets them a new truck, the LAPD admits guilt, not that guilt isn't appearant already. The internal inquiry will find the officers justified in their actions, then the civil case will be settled out of court a year or two down the road. This family is screwed until then, which will make the LAPD lawyers happy because they'll be willing to accept a smaller settlement than they would otherwise if the family had some money set aside to weather the financial storm.
  5. It's finally dawned on him that he's getting paid a King's Ransom to be an Angels fan. He gets to go to all the games, hang out with the players, listen in on the closed door meetings, and wear Angels red the whole time without the everyday grind of actually having to perform at the highest level. Yeah, I'd say that too if I were him.
  6. Name 3 Boxing champs in any weight class from both countries.Case closed. (insert smilie face indicating "I'm having fun, don't take it too seriously" here)
  7. Canadians are probably still pretty pissed about Mexicans screwing up the immigration policies here in 'Murica.
  8. Since the topic is asking for a singular movie, not just a list of every movie about the military or war, I will stick with the original premise and name what I believe to be the single best movie about War to date. Schindler's List
  9. I tip based on the service I get, not on some set % of the bill. I've been known to tip as low as a quarter, and as high as 150% (yes, you read that right). Out here in Vegas, as a local, you can really get the run of the town if you tip well and get totally screwed if you get the rep of not tipping. But if you get the rep of tipping according to the service received, well, you'd be surprised at the "extras" you can get in this town, even above and beyond the usual 20%ers.
  10. Does anyone have the whereabouts of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse The Body Ventura today? Just sayin'.
  11. John Brennan is in the job less than a couple of weeks and this happens? What a coinky dink! Now maybe we can our hands on some of that sweet sweet Venezuelan Oil.
  12. And here I thought this thread was going to have something to do with the Kate Upton doppleganger thread. Darn. Carry on.
  13. So, did he get the girl? Wait, wait, don't tell me, I hate spoilers.
  14. Every Sunday night, I have what's called "Sunday Night Classic Movie Night". It's far from "Traditional", but from what I've found from my more famous twitter followers, it's become a bellweather for "good classic movies" (which puts a hell of a lot of added pressure on my choice). Yesterday's movie was Alfred Hitchcock's "North By Northwest" which is, quite frankly, a hard act to follow as it is possibly the best effort from one of the best directors in Hollywood history. Now that I know this thread exists, I will try to post the Sunday Night Classic Movie choice here as well. I'll warn you, though, some Sunday nights, it's not going to be very good given my affinity towards really bad 50's Sci-Fi films.
  15. "Ever so slightly concerned" is the wrong term. Resigned is the correct one. After watching the holes that the Angels had last year not being filled during the off-season, coupled with the pathetic performance the Angels have given this spring training (I'm not talking about the W/L record, but rather the performances so far of the supposed starters, coupled with the idea that it's really only the first through fourth innings that indicate the true strength of the major league squad) this team looks like it's only goal is to earn the gate by the acquisition of Josh Hamilton and the continuing admiration of one Albert Pujols. A playoff birth is not in the Angels cards except for a single game WC playoff and maybe an ALDS appearance. This team is not designed to get to the playoffs, but rather to get to the payoffs (gate receipts). The fact that the Angels have only a 3 man rotation as well as a noticeable dropoff in talent as soon as they need to call up starting pitchers from the Minor League system if need be is not just disconcerting, it's short sighted. Look, I love the Angels and really, REALLY want them to succeed, however, I do not see anything in this current roster that screams World Series contender. Believe me, more than anyone that is going to slam me for saying so, I hope that I am wrong in my assessment. I think this team is closer to a 30 to 1 shot at winning it all all than they are at their current odds.
  16. My worst job was working briefly for a Mortgage Pool Underwriting Company. You know those guys that caused the financial collapse of 2008? Yeah, that company was a major factor. There was only one other person in that entire company that wasn't a complete scumbag, and he was in IT. There was so much money dissappearing down various black holes in that place it had me baffled. My job was to take calls from underwriters at all hours day or night to make sure they were happy. One night at 3 AM I got a phonecall because an underwriter didn't have a mint on her pillow when she got back from the bar. I told her there was nothing I could do about it at that time (I had to be in the office in 3 hours anyway) and I would take care of it then. When I got into the office I then got bitched out about it. And that was a good day. The worst day on the job was putting together a database of all of our mortgage underwriters and ticking them off, one by one as they called to "check in" on where they were and that they were safe. That day was September 11, 2001, and not all of them checked in.
  17. One word, "Yiffing". P.S. - Do NOT Google that at work or on your Mom's computer.
  18. Photojournalists take awkward photos of everyone. For every "good" photo you see published, there's usually 3 to 30 bad ones. While photoshop has really cut down the ratio, it's unavoidable. As far as Nolan Ryan being ousted, if true, that's maybe the best news the Angels, and the rest of the AL West for that matter, could receive. Nolan is responsible for the Rangers recent success more than any other person. And they have been extraordinarily successful the past few years, despite their not getting the ring.
  19. I'm a bit behind the action (watching on DVR). I just watched Trumbo crush a kid's heart. Coming back from break to the top of the 7th, there was a closeup of a kid with a baseball and pen reaching out to and shouting to Trumbo to sign his ball. Trumbo just kept walking and you can precisely pinpoint the exact moment where the kid's heart breaks in much the same way Bart was able to pinpoint the exact moment Lisa broke Ralph's heart on the Simpsons. It was simultaniously sad to see as well as absolutely hillarious in that uncomfortable way.
  20. I've seen bottles of it. Are they only individually sold? Or is just for the internets?
  21. Both Taco Bell and Arby's do really bad things to my system. Explosively bad things (one in one direction, the other in the other). I will also never consume food at a strip club, ever.
