Looks like Trout isn't the TE on the Angel's football team anymore.

Killer draft pick by the Angels IMO

If Maitan hits like the Angels think he will, he could end up moving over to 1B and it wouldn't hurt his value.
But I don't think we've seen the best of Maitan yet. Here in the next couple years, something is going to click and he'll be a monster at the plate and in the field.

I know everyone else already gave their takes, so I'll just briefly offer mine as they probably don't offer anything we don't already know.
Jordyn Adams - Obviously a superior athlete. The swing itself looks loose and fitted to drive pitches to all fields, but I don't see the power in it. I don't like that we loaded up on another outfielder when the systems seems full of those already, but he never focused on baseball before. Maybe the experts are right, maybe this is a great pick. He's likely to get a lot better and judging by the dunk and the football highlight videos, he has more upside than pretty much everyone in the draft.
As soon as the Angels switch sports, they'll have the best football team by far with Adams, Hunter Jr., and Marsh at wide receiver and Hermosillo at RB. We'll put Trout at TE. Need a QB.
Jeremiah Jackson - I don't know a lot about him, only briefly read his name pre-draft. But there are two things he has in that video that you can't fake, size and power.
If the experts say they did good, then I'll buy it.

I know one scout that's excited about that Cuban kid we signed for a couple hundred thousand, I think his name is Orlando Martinez or something. He's an OF that has one the best bat to ball skills of anyone coming off the island in his age group.
    Draws Leonys Martin comps.
So put him in the mix with the others and we can see Eppler has really built himself quite the farm system, particularly at the lower levels.

Again, I want to honor Calhoun as a clubhouse favorite, great defender and formerly underrated player.
That's why I don't think we should cut him or even demote him.
Put him on the DL. Give him a month to clear his head, relax, fix the swing, make adjustments and then come back.
Having said all of that, I've been saying for like 8 months now that Michael Hermosillo could replace Calhoun. He's not as good of a defender, but is still good. He gets on base more, steals more bases and hits for around the same power as Calhoun.
I think Hermosillo is the better overall player, and he's younger and less expensive.

    1. You want Suarez to leapfrog Barria in the rotation, which is hilarious, but not in a good way.
    2. You want to start the clock on Suarez and Canning and thus lose a year of team control.
    3. You want Barria to pitch in relief, something he's never done, something his arsenal isn't well--suited for
I'm also pretty sure you mentioned something about trading Richards at the deadline and trading Kinsler immediately.
    This isn't fantasy baseball.
Those are all up there as some of the worst ideas I've heard pitched.  And this is angelswin....this site has been around for a very long time which means we've read a ton of bad ideas over the years.

He signed as a minor league free agent. So I think that unless he's called up to the big league roster, the contract he's on is only good for one year.
And given his age, you know the Angels aren't worried about starting his service clock.
It's honestly astounding he hasn't been promoted yet. Bordering on the ridiculous actually. I understand not promoting him to play 2B because Kinsler wasn't far off breaking out like he is right now. But with Cozart ailing, and Valbuena going through long stretches of nothingness and Marte taking up roster space while neither hitting the ball or playing acceptable defense, JMF should've been on this roster three weeks ago.
Fernandez isn't the answer to all the Angels problems, but he's definitely an improvement for the offense and they need that in a big way.

The guys I'll be keeping an eye on (at least in the box score) from the DSL are...
    1. Raider Uceta - Mammoth BP power as I understand. Absolutely Built with a capital B for a 16/17 year old child. Plays corner OF but a move to 1B is definitely in the table in the future.
    2. Rainier Rivas - 6'3" 200 lbs at age 16. Power hitter with natural loft.
    3. Jose Reyes - Projectable frame. Advanced hitter.
    All of them outfielders.
Of note, an important development here is that three prospects in particular appear as if they'll be skipping the DSL.
    1. OF Trent Deveaux - Given the glowing reports, that's expected.
    2. OF D'Shawn Knowles - Another major international signing from last year.
    3. OF Orlando Martinez - Signed out of Cuba, the second best hitter from their 18U team behind Luis Robert. Now 20 years old, supposedly has a plus bat with moderate pop and speed.
Gosh....we have a lot of outfield prospects.

Not convincing Kole to go to the minors, that isn't the way it works. He goes on the DL, heads back to AZ to figure out what the issue is and correct it, that should take probably 2-3 weeks. Then you send him to Salt Lake on rehab to implement those adjustments. If his swing is indeed fixed at that point, I'd say he only needs a few games.
So I'd say three to four weeks.

As I've said before, I think he should leech starts from a number of guys, making him a super-utility player. One start a week at 3B, one at 2B, one at 1B and one at DH.
Putting Fernandez's bat atop our lineup does move the proverbial needle, I feel.

Yunel's problem was throwing. Plus, I'm not advocating we make Fernandez the permanent starter there. But as a fill in, or starting there once or twice a week is fine.

Also, for all those wondering, Fernandez's defense is just fine. This isn't Grant Green we're talking about here, where he was so atrociously bad at every position that it didn't matter how good his bat was.
At third base his reaction time seems average or a tick below. His glove is average or a tick above, his arm is average but his release is very quick and accurate. His footwork could use some work, but generally speaking, he's fine over there. It isn't great defense, it might not be average, but it isn't terrible. I'd say like Yunel Escobar but with a more accurate arm. Better than Marte.
Second base is his natural spot. Good reactions, good footwork, good arm. Terrible range going up the middle but ok range going to his left. A good glove and good instincts. He won't win any Gold Gloves but he's a little better than Giavotella was and he played a full year and a half for the Angels.
At first base he's actually looking pretty good. He's smaller like Valbuena is but that doesn't seem to bother the Angels. He's better there than Marte.
Jose Miguel Fernandez is a fine defender and a very good hitter.
