I fully believe that the Angels are very interested in Cole. Let’s hope it’s not just window shopping.

If they had offered that regrettable no trade clause he would be Marlin.

He was ok at first but quickly got lit up as time went on. He pretty much bailed out on us in his last season. He also got rocked in his only postseason appearance and he stuck up for Josh Hamilton instead of the organization during his relapse. I think his relationship with the organization went south after that.

I like their farm. It’s come along way.

Injuries and the sudden death were unplanned. They waited out the injuries to GRich, Shoemaker, Heaney, Trop, Wilson, Ohtani and even Skaggs. These injuries have derailed opportunities to sign other big arms. This bad luck can only be fixed by spending big money. People are mentioning the $208M threshold like it’s their money to spend but it’s Arte’s and he may not want to spend more than his normal $165Mish budget.

There’s some very important decisions to be made for sure. Eppler’s winter has to productive with selective spending and smart trades. Another thing Jeff, we have to try to look at things through Arte’s eyes. He’s seeing the Rays playing very competitive baseball for $60M (entire team) and he sees the A’s doing the same for $90M. We have the best player in baseball and some of the highest paid players in baseball but we can’t catch a second wild card and we’re asking Arte to fork out another $200M (for one guy). He’s probably privately freaking out at the cost of not winning.

It’s crazy money. If the Angels were on the cusp of being a serious championship contender then you make that deal. But they’re not and Arte has been burned by GMJ, Wells, Pujols, Hamilton, Wilson and it looks like Upton might be headed down that path also. We’re not just “one player” away from being an elite team. If Heaney, Canning and Ohtani and Skaggs RIP were all pitching competitively healthy this season and they needed that one guy to anchor them then I could see an all in deal. The problem isn’t Cole, it’s the question marks with the rest of the rotation.

Only when he’s pitching?

I’ll be blunt. He would play for Marlins if they offered him over the top ridiculous money. He’s going to sign the final contract of his life so he’s going to get what he can get. If someone offers him something stupid like 6/210, I could see Arte saying no thank you.

I’m pretty confident that Cole would love to play for the Angels. It’s all going to be on Arte if it’s going to happen.

I think anything that promotes the game is a good thing. The London series was sold out. They get nice ratings during the postseason but there are a lot of empty seats throughout the league from mostly non-contending teams after the break. They’re trying to create new ways to keep up the level of interest for baseball. Baseball already has a lot of competition with cfb, nfl and soccer. I think it’s good for the game.
