Wondering if the IRS will have something to say about deferring 68m of his $70 m. After all it is payroll. Before i retired the most i could defer into a retirement account was 15%.

I am liking the possibilities now that Ohtani is gone. The team is more flexible at dh to rest guys, yet keep their bat in the lineup. The available payroll should be able to sign a couple of starters and a closer. Much needed. Trust me that agents will notice the available payroll surplus. Wash and Goins ability to tighten the defense. Shanuel will be project #1. Which is why i like the White deal. gives us a late inning defensive replacement at first. We will have that 2nd round compensation pick in July. We should still have ample payroll to add at the trade deadline if needed. Go gettum Perry.

At this point, it looks like White will be an expensive defensive replacement for Shanuel at first, and for Adell in the OF late in games.

Really would like to have Lee hitting leadoff. He would supply on base skills and better baserunning. Also think he will be better defensively than Ward in LF. Really like Hicks too. Think he is going to get way over payed by someone. I also think Iminaga is someone who could fit in good. If he doesn't crack the rotation right away, he could be a good piggyback option with another starter. At this point, i am not a fan of signing a dh. That spot should be kept flexible for guys being rotated thru that spot. Like when O'Hoppe isn't catching, he could dh to keep his bat in the lineup. Trout, Rendon,Drury,Adell, Rengifo and Shanuel could also be rotated there. To me, it just gives the team more flexibility to rest guys and keep their bats in the lineup. Not to mention the savings of one less contract.

I am on the record being against paying the kind of money being rumored to Ohtani. That said, the longer the negotiations go, the more i think the Angels re-sign him. I hope i am wrong.
