So I have to disagree with Blum here.

It's not the fact that Arte hasn't spent enough -- he has run consistently large payrolls (but of course never really stepping over the Luxury Tax in any significant manner).

Really the story, here, is HOW the money was spent. There you can point to poor investments in the Minor League system, large contracts handed out players that really, in retrospect (or heck, even at  the time they were signed!), should never have been paid that kind of money. Pujols, Rendon, et. al., the Angels have not invested well for the most part.

Artie definitely neglected the farm system. Teams invest in their farm system to build a winning organization. It takes time and the money spent isn’t as flashy as signing a big name free agent. Artie had Ohtani at a bargain price and pocketed the savings instead of investing. REN-DONE signing was an abysmal failure. The Angels had their share of bad luck with the injuries to Trout but they were never a serious contender and should have traded Ohtani at the trade deadline or even before the season to maximize his value and acquire players to replace him. Moreno and Minasain were conned into believing that they could compete. Nevin was the stooge that was too worried about keeping his job rather than tell them the truth. This team wasn’t close to contention.

  2. Nevin has been stealing a paycheck for a long time. I hope he’s hurting just like I was every time I had to watch Barria pitch. Maybe they are curled up on a couch somewhere spooning. Neither one of those clowns belong in baseball at any level. As for Minasian he should have been let go as well. He went all in with a pair of deuces at the trading deadline with Nevin as his manager. That’s the definition of insanity.

The Angels would have to eat a huge portion of his remaining deal (something like $250 million owed after the year)…..not sure it would be worth it…..

They are paying him and Ren DONE for not playing regardless. Trout doesn’t belong in the same sentence as REN DONE but irregardless he can’t stay on the field.

Some are pissed I guess, that the Angels are apparently giving up on the season.

I’m just pissed that they haven’t put Nevin on waivers yet. Oh that along with the excitement from watching Barria throw batting practice. He should get a job as full time pitcher for the home run derby. He puts it there perfectly.

They average about 3.80 walks per game.

Judging by the recent games it seems like 3.80 per inning but regardless if you’re not throwing strikes then you’re always behind in the count against the players that you’re pitching to. Look at what batting averages are when the counts are 2-0 or 3-1. Totally different story than if you’re pitching ahead in the count. Angels pitching has been terrible between all the walks and the 0-2 meatballs. They need to paint the catchers glove fluorescent orange and get vision testing for the entire staff. They’re atrocious.

  6. Perry knew that this team as constructed didn’t have enough pitching to hold a lead in their own division let alone run down teams ahead of them. Angels are what they are which is a mediocre aging team that is just a little bit better than the Kansas City’s or the A’s in the American League. We see things with our hearts as fan’s but he is getting paid big bucks to make the right moves to better the team. He failed the organization.

That’s a philosophy to get guys to throw more strikes and get ahead, not necessarily to protect against pitch tipping.

But it’s a good strategy that’s working, and any team that doesn’t adopt that is falling behind.

Definitely fits with what the Angels need. Between starting pitchers and relievers it seems like they must average 6-8 walks per game at minimum. Who needs to get hits when you get free passes to first base. Angels staff are like bad Little League pitchers. They will throw 4 balls before they throw 3 strikes. Pitching coach needs to follow the manager who is in over his head out the door.

    The bullpen is simply atrocious.

Another 2 strike pitch hit out of the park.

They can’t throw a strike when the count is 0-0 or 1-0 but they have no problem throwing 0-2 beach balls. Whoever they have as a pitching coach is getting paid for being incompetent. Half their losses are due to walks and 0-2 batting practice balls.

I think a lot of fans would agree Estevez is not a lights-out closer. I’m not simply proposing this thought over 2 blown saves. His command is shaky outing to outing with that gorilla looking delivery. His mechanics look bad. Colorado didn’t want him closing. He fell into the closer role with this team when Quijada went down. Maybe Q wasn’t the guy either. Estevez had a nice run and we got the most out of him.

This bullpen changed more than we’ve seen a bullpen change in 100 games. But Estevez has kept the closer role through it all because of a perfect saves ratio, ignoring everything else. Why? It’s caught up to him and suddenly he’s a mediocre 23/25.

I think it’s not only better for the remainder of this season, whatever it means, but also going forward into 2024 to develop a new closer.

Soriano could be an option. He’s got nasty stuff. His command is better. He’s tougher to homer off of. Just get it done.

Estevez has looked like hot garbage. Problem with Soriano is he’s never in control so I could see him pulling an Estevez and walking two or three batters to start the inning until he gets the go ahead run at the plate and then throwing a meatball on an 0-2 count. Sound familiar. Angels need a catcher that will go out to the mound and grab these clowns by the throat and tell them to quit fucking around and throw strikes. Where the heck is their pitching coach. Hiding behind the manager’s skirt. Somebody needs to start doing their job. It’s obvious that Nevin is in way over his head. He coddled Estevez when he blew the game against the Mariners . Look how well that turned out.

  10. Moose is worth 20 Rendon’s which doesn’t add up to much. He at least shows up to work everyday while Rendon is limited to paydays. Good player but nothing that you should have in a complete rebuild which is what the next manager is facing. Why not use the roster spot for someone younger because nothing is going to happen overnight. 2024 is looking like an epic battle with the Athletics to stay out of the basement of the AL West. That’s not even close to an exaggeration.

  11. The tank is empty and they play legitimate playoff teams so highly unlikely that this team has more than 74 wins. 56 win team today with 49 games to play. With the way they looked this last week a 18 - 31 close to the season seems appropriate. Rendon might awaken from his season long siesta to pick up some garbage time stats to make the worst deal in Angels history stink a little less but why play when you get paid regardless. Rendon could care less.

The best step forward is Arte to sell, the entire FO cleaned out, Nevin gone, only keep Trout and try to win when he’s an old man. Reality sucks.

I agree. I would actually try to find a home for Trout as well and give him a shot a the post season. Tired of being the red headed stepchild of LA so a new owner with the resources to build a new stadium would really go far in turning things around. Forget about Ohtani because as good as he is he can’t save this team and while a really long term Pujols contract might look good for the first part it will be an albatross once this unicorn two way player begins to age. Retool the farm system and get a young manager that’s not a retread and has the confidence and commitment to build a roster that can compete for a decade without the huge mega bucks type superstar contracts. Steal some front office personnel from models like the Astros, Rays, Blue Jays and Orioles that find a develop people Every year. This current organization doesn’t have a clue.

Holy cow, you are way over the top with this.

Think about it. Am I really? Or have you not figured things out yet? I stand by my comment confidently knowing that the Angels as constructed, Managed, Coached and owned need a major overhaul and an exorcism. They are poster child’s for poor personnel decisions, management decisions, coaching deficiencies and ineffective ownership. Hate to break the news to you but what they have isn’t working. Do you want to sit through another decade of disappointment? Maybe sometimes you have to go OVER THE TOP!

Let's have a little perspective here. We're not the A's, or the Royals, or the Rockies, or the Nats, or the Pirates, or a few other teams. We are one game under .500. Forget the playoffs and just play better baseball. Get our players back healthy and go from there.

Then after the season, fire the manager and the coaches and start to rebuild. And Arte, PLEASE sell the team and get the hell outta here!!

I can guarantee you that the Angels will finish below.500 and only escape the cellar of their division because they have a single A team preventing it. This team needs to be blown up and use the final months of the season to evaluate the young players. They mirage is over this team as constructed under performed. I wouldn’t even make an offer to Ohtani. He’s going everywhere and this team has been completely screwed in every big contract they have handed out. I know it’s sacrilegious but I’m including Trouts contract as well. Great player. HOF. WHEN He’s not HURT!

Those pitches for were sp far outside that they shpuld be balls no matter how consistent the umpire was.  The batter had no chance.

Maybe I am an ignorant ass, by I still think a healthy Angel team with robotic umps is about 23 games over .500 today.

You’re not wrong about the umpires most are old as fuck and blind but they aren’t the reason this team has relievers that come in and proceed to walk the appropriate number of batters with pitches all over the place until they bring the go ahead run to the plate and then throw a meatball down the middle on an 0-2 count. This team completely collapsed after Estevez shit his pants in the ninth inning on Friday. Phil Neven just made excuses for him in the postgame. Nevin is clueless and his team’s approach in both pitching and hitting reflects it. Stop with the retreads. Hire someone new and rebuild long term.

I guess he has to say this.

In Coach speak that translates into “ We are still getting paid whether we win or lose so fuck it” Nevin is in WAY over his head. He knows it. The rest of MLB knows it. This performance by the Angels team against the Mariners was one of the most pitiful performances that I have witnessed in my 45 years of watching and following the Angels. Good bye Ohtani. You deserve better. Please someone take Trout off their hands and give him an opportunity. I would continue to pay Rendon’s salary for him to stay the fuck away.
