  1. Which of the following is grammatically correct, and why?

    - Tom is faster than me.

    - Tom is faster than I.

The answer is the 2nd one because the word "than" is a marker for a new independent clause, and "I" is the subject of the new independent clause.

But it's rare to see anybody write "Tom is faster than I" because it looks and sounds stupid.  I never correct myself when writing or saying it even though I know the rules of subject and object pronouns.

It's even worse when you use plural pronouns.

    - Tom is faster than them.

    - Tom is faster than they.

Yep, the 2nd one is correct grammatically, but nobody says or writes it because it looks and sounds so stupid because it's so normal to hear and see it written or spoken incorrectly.

And yeah, breaking kids of their incorrect apostrophe usage is pretty hard.  You use an apostrophe to show possession, omission, or a contraction.  The only exception to the rule is its/it's.  But publications to this day differ over how they use an apostrophe in a sentence like this:

The progressive tax has been around in the United States since the 1860's/1860s.

I've seen major publication use 1860's, and others use 1860s.  1860 possesses nothing in the above sentence, and it's not a contraction.  So why use the apostrophe there?

Same thing with shortening something like 1960s to  '60s.  The apostrophe rule works with that because the apostrophe is replacing omitted numbers, but I've seen major publications type that as 60's.

I love grammar and usage discussions about English because it's such a weird language.

Delete out Finn and Rose which was probably 1/3 of the movie, and Last Jedi isn't that bad.  Of course it's tough to block out that much of a movie when watching it.  Even at home.

dude.  exactly what i've said since it came out.  get rid of all of that, and it's not a terrible movie if you do a bunch of rewriting.  needed a little more legitimate training for Rey, but i can understand why Johnson didn't want to be accused of cookie cutting from Empire.

    Rise of Skywalker spoilers below:

anybody see that Rise of Skywalker rumors say that Palpatine cloned himself because he knew Vader would betray him, and that he has been biding his time with Snoke as his surrogate until Rey and Ren confront him?  i've been watching rebels lately, and i'm really worried that Abrams will say that  palpatine somehow got access to the world between worlds and saw what happened in Return of the Jedi. if hundreds of Palpatine's star destroyers somehow come out of nowhere, it will be the worst fan fiction possible brought to the screen.  if leia and hux join to fight palpatine, then just wow.

Picard facepalm aside, agreed on Mangold.  He’s a consistent and underrated director.

    thanks.

i'm pretty cynical, but i do really love hanks and rhys.  the rogers movie was saccharine. i don't expect a mafia movie regarding the guy, but i do expect at least a little nuance.  but then again, i'm not 14 years old anymore.

and yeah, i'm a huge mangold fan.  3:10 to Yuma has maybe Russell Crowe's and and Bales' best performances to date.  Mangold brought that out of with Witherspoon and Phoenix in Walk the Line. Matt Damon was incredibly smart to do one of his movies at this point in his career. Dude showed he can actually actfor the 2nd time (the first was The Martian...or maybe his faux Loki in Thor: Ragnarok) since The Talented Mr Ripley. I'll watch anything Mangold directs because he also surrounds himself with the best talent in Hollywood for every aspect of the movies he chooses to make from costumes, to cinematography, to everything.

Cheer up. The Mariners won the first three weeks of April. The Angels didn't win any three-week stretch all season.

Also, never forget 1995 and 2001 in which the M's accomplished....nothing at all really.  But 1995 and 2001 bobbleheads and tshirt giveaways will get M's "fans" to pay for tickets for this dogshit team.

    It's all so Facking hysterical.

  5. i'd probably check out a place like that if i were going with somebody.

looks like it'll be a solo trip this time.  staying on a comp at NYNY for a couple of days, and then switching over to cosmo.

btw, blackstone/cosmo just bought Bellagio from MGM on a leaseback deal. circus circus was sold to the Treasure Island people.

  6. i haven't been on here in a long time, lol

trump will win a 2nd term.  i accept it.  he can literally say and do whatever he wants, and never risk losing the electoral college. the gop is better and smarter than the dnc right now, period.

the emails i get from the dnc begging for money are patently absurd.  "end citizen's united!" and such, which will never ever ever ever ever happen.  they have no legitimate agenda or platform other than "we hate trump".

i like castro, but he won't come close to making the top of the ticket.
