Bill Stoneman won in spite of Disney.  The Angels would be a vastly better team today had he simply stayed on as GM for a couple more years or if more of the old guard survived the Dipoto purge.

I'm not mad at Arte.  I just don't like the way he runs the franchise.  He's actually pretty predictable and nothing much has changed since he started.  A little bit of window dressing here and there but really, it's all been part of the same MO.  Feed the major league team.  Put a reasonably marketable team on the field with a blend of some star power and hint of decency.
And to the comment earlier of him riding the coattails of the previous regime.  Sort of true.  What he really did was to ride the vision of Bill Stoneman.  Arte seemed a lot more passive in those days where he let Bill do his thing and Bill kept him under control.  I think that 2009 series loss to the Yanks really changed him.  And Reagins fumbling about sort of facilitated him getting more involved.
Arte wants to win and has shown his support in the way he sees best by spending a certain amount.  His efforts have been misguided for a long time and while there is that passion for winning, it's never really been ahead of his passion for making money.  Except last year.  That was really quite the disaster.  Raise payroll.  Put a big dent in the farm.  Barely win 70 games and soon to follow you lose your golden goose to your biggest rival down the street.
And the reason I just shake my head at the way he runs things is that he was willing to throw 9 figures at yet another player who is probably on the downside of his prime if not already past it.
We joke about the definition of insanity.  But I guess it's not insane considering that he's probably pocketing millions on a yearly and could easily get a more than 10 fold return on his original investment.
I always gotten the sense from him when he does interviews that he's got this sort of 'if you don't like it then oh well' sort of attitude.
We talk a lot about what he should do differently.  Why should he?  As far as he's concerned, it ain't broken.  The only thing that broken was last year when he spent an extra 50 million dollars for no reason.

In the end I’m glad they didn’t get Snell with an opt out. Even thought I’m the first to say pick 45 rarely hits, until that guy doesn’t hit he’s likely a top 10 team prospect. Which just helps you make moves at the very least.
I hope they do something. Having an offer out to Snell or at least being willing to hear offers is a molecule of positivity. Lorenzen and Clevinger at least provide a better #4-5 option. Martinez Pham or Belt help the lineup. I truly hope we are not trying to get excited about Sano or Soto.
I am also starting to feel that Adell gets traded in the next 10 days. Hicks and Moniak are clearly ahead of him, and you don’t keep him as a DH.

Now that this is all over what I was told is that there were multiple offers that Boras presented to the Perry, Perry took each of them to Arte and Arte declined them all and told Perry to keep negotiating.  I imagine that the offers presented had early opt outs.

I would prefer him to Snell but unless he changes his mind on location that isn’t happening.

Didn’t want Snell on that type of deal and the fact that it’s the Giants and not the Yanks or Astros makes it even better.

There's an opt out after this season. That would have been a bad move

This has always been the case from my standpoint but my concern was that the Angels would do something that doesn't best suit them.
Someone will give him 1yr with an opt out and it shouldn't be us.

They should sign Snell, Montgomery, and JD Martinez and finish with 83 wins.

I don't think that's the best idea, because if he's pitching at a 4.50 ERA or he's only pitched 10 games at the deadline, you're out a pick and stuck with him on what could be a "rebuilding" one year season. I think they have to get 2 years guaranteed, bare minimum. You can trade him this deadline, this offseason, or next deadline. That's 3 chances. Or, if he has a good season and the team finishes around .500, it's attractive to FAs to see a team on the rise with Snell coming back.

Im not giving Snell this contract just for him to opt out after year 1 with no playoffs leaving us without a second rounder. All for people to be happy we signed someone who is obviously better suited for a legit contender on that contract.

Teams really had to see Snell pitch a sim game to pique their interest? Being a Cy Young winner ain't what it used to be.

I am trying to visualize his staff meetings...
Arte: "John what are they saying on AW?"
Carpino: "BTH thinks Perry is throwing a Hail Mary."

    Hmmm.

There’s a few reasons I find Rosenthal’s report hard to believe.
Something like that could’ve only come from Perry, Arte, or Boras. The Angels clearly don’t tolerate leaks from others, hence everything always being a surprise. It doesn’t benefit Perry to leak it at all. It greatly benefits Boras if he’s try to get Arte to agree to something or “prove” something. And why would Heyman, Olney, Murray, and Nightengale all suggest there is dialogue happening if Arte has been a flat no all offseason? Why would Snell/Boras leak to several guys that Snell wants to play in Anaheim? I think it’s more likely their offers are being rejected, and so that leak in addition to Houston is pursuing in addition to “He pitched today, the Giants and Astros watched and he looked good” is an effort to scare Arte because Anaheim is probably his first choice. Why didnt Feinsand and Heyman say the Angels were there? They got their info from Boras most likely. Rosenthal’s leak fits in with something Boras would want to share more than just sources reporting from someone in the Angels.
One other point, Arte flat refused to even consider Snell or JDM, but when Perry called about Stephenson he said “Heck yeah give that reliever 3/33!!”

It could be the Angels were working on a deal with Snell, Boras and co weren’t sold on the offer and wanted to wait a few more days and now the Astros are jumping in. Making it a little more complicated.

these types of things move fast, especially with injuries. I don’t think stradling ever said Snell was 100% going to be an Angel. He mentioned it could get done and they were working on a deal. The angels have missed out on Carl Crawford, Mark Texiera, and Adrian Beltre off the top of my head when we all thought we had deals done with those guys.

Nothing is official until they sign their name on the contract

Olney’s report was that Snell preferred to go the Angels and there had back and forth between them and the team.
Rosenthal’s report was that Minasian has been pushing Arte to sign him, but Arte has resisted.
Where’s the contradiction? The way I see it, Snell wants the Angels, Perry wants Snell, and Arte doesn’t.
