I’ve wondered a lot this year how much not having O’hoppe and Stassi all year affected the pitching side… I’ve heard pitchers love the way that O’hoppe handles the game, pitch calling, all the little things could have made a huge difference in the whole year. I’ve questioned the pitch calling quite a bit all year… I don’t know shit but clearly it hasn’t been good.

It’s honestly great to see a GM that is a fan and cares about his team. 7 game losing streak ends and he’s high fiving guys on the way out of the suite.

The Angels Dared to Dream...(Fangraphs)
TroutField replied to Angelsjunky's topic in LA Angels | MLB Daily
It’s generally accurate but fails to mention the angels have some solid young players ready to contribute at the major league team. It’s not the Orioles young core but Neto, O’hoppe, Adell, Moniak, Thaiss, with Schaunel seeming to be close to major league ready in the position player side is nothing to scoff at. They have Drury, Trout, Rengifo, Ward, Rendon (LOL), any FA signing to compliment them on the position player side. Kyren Paris is having a solid season and seems to be the future 2B in a couple years. pitching side we did develop Canning, Sandoval, Detmers, Ohtani, Silseth all while having the worst farm system in baseball. There are some random good prospects sprinkled in to each level right now, aside from AAA. Nothing that jumps out at you, but still something to look forward to at least. -
Not sure he was underrated but Torii Hunter was underappreciated, at least by Arte Moreno… should have finished his career in Anaheim. Darren Oliver, that man was amazing. Talk about shut down reliever, never had amazing stuff but just got the job done. A 20 year MLB career for a reliever is insane.

Gameday Thread: Giants @ Angels (August 7th, 2023)
TroutField replied to Chuck's topic in LA Angels | MLB Daily
Last little vent for the season from me and I’ll stop. How the hell is Aaron Loup going to survive the entire year? Someone should go back and see how many losses can be attributed to him. He’s so bad it’s crazy, and we just keep on trying and trying for him to be successful. Perry let down every Angels fan by failing so badly at building a bullpen. -

They not only fall out of the playoff race but go on one of their patented extended losing streaks that makes it seem like they will never win a game again. All you can do is laugh at this point. -
Jacob Webb claimed off waivers by the Orioles

My mistake, I didn’t watch the whole game. I thought it was Moore but he pitched the 7th -

I know the rules… I said if a reliever is struggling for the first 2-3 batters he can then make a decision to pull them. I didnt say to pull them after the second batter but he better get somebody up and warming if a pitcher just doesn’t have it that day, he then can have someone ready to come into the game before it all unravels. The manager should have a feel for the game and not be worried about hurting feelings if someone can’t get the job done that day. I know Estevez has been almost perfect this year but Thursday he clearly didn’t have it, forcing him to get out of that mess when he’s struggling with control wasn’t the ideal situation for the team overall. Lopez was down there and has showed some nice stuff so far with the Angels. Anyways, we lose and it changed the entire outlook of the rest of the series. -

I agree 100%… whether it’s Tamin’s bullpen metric or Nevin’s poor in game handling of the bullpen, it’s been one of the main reasons the Angels couldn’t stay in the race. I’m not blaming them for the past 10 games, but overall this year it’s been absolute shit. I knew coming in they neglected it and needed 1-2 more dependable arms, they tried to fix the depth of the offense and neglected the pen. Also, if Nevin sees after 2-3 batters a reliever just doesn’t have it that day, why doesn’t he pull them out of the game before it’s ruined? Estevez had no control in game 1 of the mariners series, that’s fine get the next best arm available to limit the damage. He just leaves his guys out there to sink, and then pulls them 1 batter too late. -
Groundhog’s day just never ends. im sorry if I sound overly negative but I’m just burnt out by this approach, it just relying on too much to break right to win. I really thought the team this year was strong enough to make the playoffs and make a run at the division, but I guess I don’t know shit lol. I don’t get all the Arte Moreno hate that I’ve seen either, the man did everything he could this year to get Ohtani to the playoffs and keep him, it’s not his fault the entire lineup forgot how to swing a baseball bat once anyone gets onto second or 3rd… at some point the players needs to do their damn job. If they hit even average with runners in scoring position they are probably more like 5-5 or 6-4 over their last 10…. I was really looking forward to bringing my kids to a playoff game this year and this stupid team just can’t make that memory happen for me. Fuckers… The last time the angels were in a playoff game my daughter was 1 and I was a broke ass teenager that couldn’t even afford a playoff ticket. I guess I can find solace in the fact that College Football is right around the corner!

The man was really, really poor with inherited runners. Not even looking at stats but just based on memory… probably an okay #5-#6 option in the pen. We were trying to use him as a high leverage reliever and it just wasn’t working. -
I wasn’t really condoning trading him, my only thinking is we have very little trade capital available for a rebuild, we don’t have an Ohtani or a cost controlled Trout to get us prospect capital back. IF and notice I said IF, because Moreno wouldn’t go for it but a full rebuild might require losing a young player we don’t want to in hopes of getting a couple good prospects that might contribute in 4-5 years IF the angels get their shit together. Admittedly it almost certainly won’t happen but just a thought.
-
I think it’s going to take a LONG rebuild. That includes trading Sandoval, Detmers, Canning, Drury, hell even O’hoppe and Moniak. Plan on competing again in 2027-2028. This shit is broken and there is nobody that’s going to impact the major league roster to the point of us being competitive in our minor league system.
-
Yeah I couldn’t remember who it was, you said that was worst case scenario because they would sell off prospects and then still miss the playoffs. Unfortunately you were right, although my brain probably agreed with you, my heart on the other hand still wanted to believe in this group of losers. Right when we needed everyone to step up they didn’t, RISP hitting tanks, bullpen can’t get the big outs we need, Detmers says “he’s going through a mechanical thing” and his velo drops and gets bombed, canning “hurts a little bit when he pushes off”, ohtani cramping and blister issues in the most inopportune times, Giolito struggles with homers and his control, Moniak completely forgets how to hit, I mean the list goes on and on. At some point you have to turn to the coaches and say why can NOBODY perform as expected?
-
Not like they were ever going to come up with a hit with runner in scoring position anyways. tying the game and sending it to extras was just to make the series hurt even more by giving us false hope. Baseball gods have their magnifying glasses out just laughing their asses off watching the angels burn to the ground.
