  1. "Butcher is no Dave Duncan, but who is." Dave Reghetti Leo Mazzone ( if you want to reach back a year or two) Mike Maddox is knocking on that door. Curt Young does a HELL of a job in Oakland, he may be the best in the Bigs today. That is just off the top of my head. There ARE good pitching coaches out there other than Duncan.
  2. Here is a question... If you are like this guy on Italy, who can pitch with both arms, are you allowed to switch around to face different batters with different arms? Go from left to right during an AB? Seems like it would be within the rules..but anyone know for sure?
  3. Reagins, Stoneman, and Butchy put together a nice string high priced of clunkers. Rodney Kazmir Speier How much money burnt, and how many games lost, can be accredited to that trio? It was a team effort GM, VP-Pitching advisor, Pitching coach. Butcher is the only one not held accountable, yet.
  4. Reagins was advised (read: led) by Stoneman when it came to pitching. You don't think the pitching coach was in on the discussion when they talked about signing him? If Butcher wasn't part of the decision re Rodney, then two things spring to mind...they don't value his opinion, or his opinion was wrong. Either way, especially considering last season and Rodney suddenly emerging as an All-Star.. I don't see how Butcher gets a pass.
  5. Scioscia has a habit of being loyal to his friends, and putting that consideration above results. Stoneman and Reagins deferred to Scioscia on those decisions. Dipoto will not.
  6. Most of the Cactus league games will be wet, so maybe this will be a busier thread than yesterday.
  7. If this team struggles it will be because of pitching. The pieces are all there, but they still need to be correctly handled to be effective. If the Angels hover around .500 in April-May, "Butchy" should be the first to go. I lost confidence in Butcher years ago. I hope, and suspect, Dipoto has him on as short of a leash as he had "Hatchy" on last season.
  8. Apocalypse Now Saving Private Ryan Mini Series was "The Pacific" on HBO. Spielberg and Tom Hanks homage to the Marines who didn't get a lot of fanfare and credit when they got home, since the war fever had wound down, and people were getting back to their lives by the time they came home. Anyone who has driven to San Diego has seen Basilone Road. How many know ((I didn't) who John Basilone was? Well done series and highly recommended.
  9. Still don't know why Mexico put Agonz brother out in LF as a "defensive" replacement. He lost that game.
  10. Lots of players in the WBC looking to get back to the Bigs. Cantu had a big game, and could have been the walk off hero with the bases juiced yesterday.
  11. If USA wins Mexico would be as good as done, si?
  12. Not positive on that so might want to check into it.
  13. They said yesterday that the USA-MEX game was moved to Chase Field...which is a dome isn't it?
  14. The question shouldn't be "Who should hit second" it should be "Who will Scioscia decide to start the season with, batting second?" My educated guess, from watching Scioscia for over a decade now, says Howie will get first dibs. Especially after the spring he is having. I hope he rakes there, and think he will....and everyone should pray that he does, because otherwise it will be another April- May of lineup roulette.
  15. Didn't get real into it the first 2 times, but yesterday's games might convert me into a fan of this tourney. Cactus league could be rained out today, so more people will be watching WBC. What's the schedule, Wallerrr???
  16. Split-pea soup, and tuna melt with avo tonight.
  17. Nice! I am up in the mountains, but when we go down to the Valley (Merced) to do our big shopping, there is a huge Mexican chain store Rancho San Miguel, that carries the mesh bags of 2 doz Washington oysters for 14.99. We have tried many different recipes now, some close to yours. I always preferred raw myself, but there are so many ways to do oysters...especially the large ostiones.. Building a real smokehouse right now. Can't wait to smoke some this summer.
  18. Italy goes ahead in the top of the 9th. Why does Mexico send an infielder out to play LF??? Guy misplays two fly balls. Romo blows the save...should say errors blow the lead.
  19. Doc Martin (UK) Funny. Great writing and characters. Beautiful setting on the Cornish Coast. Recommended for anyone into binge viewing. Available on Hulu.
  20. Real good game. Nice to have baseball (that counts) to watch. Guys are having fun yet playing hard. Jorge Cantu with the big hit for Mexico so far. Still 5-4 Mexico in the 7th
  21. What are his career #'s hitting after Trout and before Pujols-Hamilton? This debate has raged since Torii left and Hamilton was signed. I have no desire to get back into it. I just believe Howie will see plenty of pitches he can hit in that spot. I am sure he will get a chance to prove me wrong.
  22. Which is why he is my choice for hitting in the 2 spot. I know I am one of few who would like to see that, but since it goes against most everybody's thinking...I have confidence that Scioscia will have him there. I think Howie will thrive there.
