  1. Advanced metrics are important but if your players aren't executing, you can't fix that with a calculator. Between the contract situation and state of the farm, we have to make what we have perform better. SABRE metrics and data analytics are appropriate for player acquisition and retention. It also plays into in game management. What it does not do is make talented players live up to their potential and the line of players who perform better when they leave the Angels is a sign Sosh is wasting talent.
  2. Saw a mention in MLBTR that Cal Ripken is starting to become interested in managing. The Nationals would be an obvious fit for him considering the location but Arte needs to at least make a call if Sosh is relieved of his duties.
  3. 1. Yes, 2. Yes but that should be part of the house cleaning. Dipoto, Sosh, and all the coaches should be sent packing. Two years ago, I thought Dipoto was the answer but I was wrong. Arte needs to start fresh and promise to stop requiring the big names. Cashman was able to pull Steinbrenner back from that ledge and win some rings in the 90's. The next GM needs to do the same for Arte. 3. Trade Howie only if you think Green is ready and you can get a 2-3 SP that is controlable for 3 or more years. Might be asking too much for HK though, especially when they know we are desperate. Petey will have to be traded and we will live with Shuck, Calhoun, and possibly Cowgill as the bottom 3 OF. 4. Yep. Pretty his price will be reasonable wanting to stay in OC and the fact that he was injured. 2 years max, including options. 5. Trout needs to be an Angel for life. To relieve some pressure on the team, put Hamilton on revocable waivers now and let him go on the claim. We don't get a player back but we clear an "untradable" contract.
  4. Not saying he is qualified or not, I just have a gut feeling that Dipoto may name him manager if given the opportunity. Mike Matheny served only as a special assistant to the GM before becoming manager in St. Louis. I don't believe Ventura had managed or coached prior to taking on the ChiSox.
  5. I suspect that if Dipoto picks the next manager, it will be Omar Vizquel
  6. If you want to remove Sosh from the dugout, move Sosh out of the dugout. He can remain an employee of the Angels in another capacity, probably sitting where Tony Reagins sat. If he wants to manage, he can request another arraingment that does not include collecting $25M from the Angels over the next five seasons.
  7. and Dipoto only has one more year left of his contract. Sosh would have to retire or exercise his opt out after the 2015 season.
  8. I wouldn't read too much into that Chuck. Lucho and Rodriguez are both on the 7 day DL in SLC. Matt Long played 2B and Green played 3B. My guess is the Marte signing was to fill the hole at 3B that Nelson was filling. Chance Ross (haven't seen him on the prospect list) was brought up from IE to fill in for Rodriguez.
  9. They will wait until after the MRI
  10. Test him for PEDs because that guys is raging.
  11. CI is signed through the 2015 season per Cot's Baseball Contracts
  12. Have a conversation with Downs, tell him you need to trade him to help restock the farm but that you want to resign him in the offseason. If and when the Angels are eliminated, put Albert on the DL and get the foot fixed. His hitting improves when he can use the lower half. Otherwise stand pat until the end of the season. Keep Aybar and Howie through 2014 when you have a better idea where Yarbrough, Lindsey, and Stammets are in their development When Albert goes on the DL for the foot bring Calhoun up to see if his bat plays in the bigs. If he is for real, go with Shuck, Calhoun, and Cowgill as your 3-4-5 in the OF and trade Bourjos in the offseason. Keep Hanson. I am not sure that we have seen his best. The two bereavement stints screwed up his season and probably lead to his time on the DL. Resign Vargas. 2 years $22M with options max. Look for a number 3 but be prepared for Vargas, Hanson, Richards/Roth/Fill in the blank -not Blanton
  13. Talked to the Salt Lake Bees batboy this morning. He said Bill Hall was on the move. He wasn't sure if he was hurt again or heading up to the big club.
  14. Had this happen at a Univ of AZ baseball game this season. The umpire called the pitcher back to the mound to pitch to one batter. PAC-12 umps are horrible but they got that one right.
  15. The Dogs haven't signed Mattingly to an extension. Send then Sosh for an arm and get a new voice in the clubhouse to get this team going.
  16. On second thought, our next manager should be Tanner Boyle. Last seen with the North Valley Athletics Association Bears. Chico's Bail Bonds can sponsor the team.
  17. Its a shame anything Alomar did or will do in his career will be negated by that one stupid incident. The guy has a brilliant baseball mind but he spat on an umpire once so we'll exclude him.
  18. I like Baylor but he is employed with the Diamondbacks. Vizquel is intriguing as manager but the name that comes to my mind is Robbie Alomar. Hersheiser as his pitching coach, Vizquel as 1B/INF coach.
  19. Emiliano Fruto is available. He pitched BP to my son's 13U team last Wednesday.
  20. Fly ball pitcher in a band box ballpark. It is a bad mix. JeDi was thinking more about the 81 games in Angel Stadium than the one game in Great America.
  21. I suspect that the pension will be frozen and replaced with a 401k. MLB is actually behind the curve compared to most large businesses. Pensions are long term financial commitments. 401k costs, if there is any employer matching, are one time costs with minimal overhead to run. They are no better or worse than most employers.
