  1. A couple pitchers have really come up big and the bullpen turnaround - huge. But offensively - and despite having what people think is an "off" year - by my numbers it's: 1. Trout 2. Strong 2nd place to Pujols 3. Under the radar guy is Freese who has consistently risen in contribution despite being pulled virtually every game in the 7th or later. I've just updated my site with my 4Score components chart for LAA and other than Hamiton, you have a full team effort - and those are the teams that win championships: https://www.4basescore.com/?page_id=609 Regards, Cycled
  2. Gameday back up now ... I think they have trouble keeping up during the blowout innings ... happened during the other 2 blowouts too.
  3. The rest of MLB is playing baseball - Angels are bringing beer league softball to every stadium. I swear as soon as I saw 1 - 0 Angels in the first I knew this was a win. My Gameday just had a long delay and says Kevin Jepsen is the DH ?????
  4. Seriously - I knew this game was an Angelss win in the 5th and now I'm scoring a blowout ... so much work scoring a blowout with expanded rosters.
  5. Not sure if I should start a new thread but I've uploaded tonight's LAA & STL games. Great win tonight and Top Contributors are: Pujols, Kendrick, and a nod to Freese. Angels are here: https://www.4basescore.com/?page_id=1336
  6. Chuck & InsidePitch - Thanks guys, means a lot. I'm certainly committed to finishing 2014 season & postseason. 2015 will depend on if I can find revenue/human resource help for this. One request to anyone: During my seeking feedback phase, from experts inside the game, I never was able to interact with a currently active player so if anyone has the ability to email my website link to a current Angel or Cardinal it would be huge for me: https://www.4basescore.com/ What I heard from the retired MLB player and a current MLB coach who reviewed my work is that there are players who " ... give themselves up for the team time and time again with nothing to show for it ... " I believe an active player would like to see that someone is accounting for their advancing runners and taking extra bases, etc. Current counts: Games scored 622+ Data line items (LAA & STL): 23,832 +
  7. Here's what I wrote on my site: 09-05-14 – Calhoun is Top Contributor and Aybar is Under the Radar guy in LAA 7-6 win in 10 at MIN: View full Game 140 PDF: https://www.4basescore.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Game-140-09-05-14-LAA-7-MIN-6.pdf https://www.4basescore.com/?page_id=1336
  8. LAA 7-6 win over MIN is posted: https://www.4basescore.com/?page_id=1336
  9. Tonight's STL loss to Milwaukee is uploaded: https://www.4basescore.com/?page_id=1297 Hope to have Angels game uploaded soon.
  10. can someone tell me if the ball Calhoun hit in the 4th which Gameday says "fielding error by right fielder" was fly ball, liner, or ground ball? thanks.
  11. Good points and I have to write fast b/c I'm scoring both LAA & STL live right now. Defense - as much as I would've liked to factor it in - was just impossible for me to do given available time and tools at my disposal so my view is that let's just say we did this for Trout and Carbrera and they were tied in my system, the defense that Trout provides would make him the clear winner. I accepted that I couldn't do defense and since it's such a hot metric that entities much larger than me are working on I saw it as an overlay or tie-breaker type of thing. I only put errors in there (and sometimes wish I hadn't) as a nod to people who want to see the "Runs/Hits/Errors" standard box and because if 2 guys are battling for a position, one is good glove, the other good bat, I wanted to factor in the cost of an error by "good bat" (specifically 2013 Descalso good bat vs 2013 Kozma good glove). I debated internally and among others about weighting and what I call free rides (i.e. a guy on 1st gets a "free ride" base running base for advancing on the batters' walk) but he should get that. What you maybe don't see in the final game scoring is the ups and downs of the players through the course of the game ... it's pretty cool and quite the horse race. I want to give you one quick example about the benefit of hitting in front of or behind whomever - speedster, slugger, whatever ==> you still have to produce. This year Matheny put Kolton Wong in the 2-hole practically every game (don't have time to pull the numbers) so you'd expect him to be an extreme beneficiary of Matt Carpenters ability to get on base in front of him ... but here's the thing - because Wong didn't do enough to produce he is way down on my Aggregate table despite getting the "benefit" of batting behind Carpenter. Conversely Jon Jay who for almost the entire season has been buried down in the 6th, 7th or 8th spot is one of the top contributors and believe me he had very little to work with down where Matheny had him. Finally over the last few games Matheny has adjusted the order. The bottom line is I always pictured someone keeping their manual symbol scorecard and if they showed the action with a "notch" on their card I tally it with a "1". RBIs - or what I call credit for the run (a guy on 3rd scores on a PB) - is essentially a bonus point and should be. Much longer reply than I intended ... I'm probably 2 innings behind on each game. Gotta run. Appreciate the discussion, will check back later.
  12. Hi to all you Angels fans, This is to introduce my scoring project which I began almost 15 months ago, just playing around with an idea, using STL Cardinals and LA Angels (2013 & 2014) as test teams. If you want to dive in and not read all below here's my website where I'm storing all my work: http://*on my website see: Game 075 – 06-21-14 – PHI 1 – STL 4 – Matt Adams example)
  13. thanks. i like gameday but you just have to take an educated guess alot on errors. infield is easy - outfield tougher
  14. I'm watching gameday - it says "Albert Pujols reaches on fielding error by center fielder ... ". Can someone tell me if that was ground ball, fly ball, line drive? I track that info and gameday doesn't say. Thanks!
  15. By my measure - at this point in time - Freese is a higher contributor than Bourjos. Avg Pct Offensive Contribution: Freese: 9.2% - Bourjos: 8.2% Player's Total Pct Offensive Contribution to LAA: Freese = 6.8% (6th highest LAA contributor) Player Total Pct Offensive Contribution to STL: Bourjos = 4.8% (9th highest STL contributor)
  16. I only track the offensive side of the game. Main reason is I'm a one person operation and there was no way I'd have a life if I included defense in my metric. I factor in errors - in a small way - but I really only did that as a nod to traditional box scores / scorecards. Thanks for the link - I browsed the win shares article, and I'll read it again when I have more time but I can tell you at a glance that my approach is much, much simpler. Could be that's bad but again - it was just me doing the work. I'm preparing for a meeting Tuesday to get advice on best way to move forward so I'll pop back in after that.
  17. Here's Player Avg In-Game Pct Contribution over 2013 (players with > 500 Plate Appearances). I have the straight up aggregate numbers too of course. (I'm trying copy and paste again but I expect to lose the nice formatting after hitting "Post") Trout 16.1% Pujols 12.9% Calhoun 12.9% Trumbo 11.9% Hamilton 11.5% Kendrick 10.8% Iannetta 9.9% Nelson 9.8% Shuck 9.8% Bourjos 9.6% Aybar 9.1% Conger 8.9% Callaspo 8.6% Cowgill 8.5% Green 8.5%
  18. AngelsJunky - Thanks for reply - I'm super busy too so I understand. The committment to this effort (2 teams - LAA & STL) eats up a ton of my time which is why I'm seeking feedback (while being careful about what I'm showing publicly) ... I need to decide if my committment is warranted. I have a variety of aggregate reports all of last year and all of this year and the aggregate roll-ups are exactly where I'm looking for the most feedback. My in-game "scorecards" (nothing at all like the standard traditional scorecard - but influenced by it) do exactly what I set out to do - show to what extent each player contributed to that day's game in a clear and concise table view. Aggregate info gets interesting so I'm still trying to figure out the best view(s). Unfortunately I'm heading out now and will be mostly unavailable all day but if you want to private message me we can discuss more when we both have more time. My request for feedback is sincere - it's time for me to decide if I continue this work or let it go.
  19. The copy and paste didn't include any of my nice formatting work. Can anyone give me a quick lesson on inserting a picture/table/chart ??
  20. Summary of Angel contributors from last night's game - using my scoring system: Player Player % Contribution Freese 26.1% Cron 19.6% + Kendrick 19.6% Aybar 10.9% Trout 8.7% Iannetta 6.5% Pujols 4.3% Cowgill 4.3% Hamilton 0.0% Total 100.0%
  21. I can't share the whole thing publicly - too much hard work and a good sum of money on legal expense to protect the idea - hence the non-disclosure agreement. I can tell you what motivated me to build: Around this time last year there was heated debate in STL about whether Holliday should be batting 3rd. I didn't know about this AngelsWin forum at that time but I suspected there was similar Pujols debate as well (as there is now). Also - I had heard several top tier players say in some form that "at the end of the season my numbers will be there" and while mathematically true it rang empty to me as a fan b/c I thought: well good for you - if you have a decent August and great September but what if you actually hurt the team from April - July? My system is built from a fan perspective: Which players on my team contributed the most to that day’s game? And I did that for every single game - STL & LAA. At the end of last year and throughout this season to date - the aggregate numbers have been fascinating. Sometime I wonder if I had time to do this for every team the league MVPs would be beyond dispute.
  22. I've spent a year doing prototype/proof of concept work on my own scoring and analysis system which I began because I couldn't find any existing (and easy to use) metrics that showed what I wanted to see. The work has been seen by a couple (low-level) baseball media members, an assistant level MLB coach, and a systems analyst with another MLB team. Feedback has been positive from a baseball merit perspective. I'm posting here because the Angels were one of my two prototype teams. My Angels dataset is for all 2013 and 2014 LAA plate appearances - in my format. I'm now looking for volunteers to do fan level review and provide constructive critique/feedback. Private message me if interested. You'll have to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
  23. All joking aside ... Seems to me that if any gland, anywhere in the body, was swollen to the size of a golf ball some minimal follow up medical testing should be done, right? Was there any medical follow up?
  24. I like this forum so don't want to come off as a troll but In my opinion: - 500 club is a bit undervalued due to PED era but also - This 500 mark is so overwhlemingly as a Cardinal (445) that it feels like this milestone/attention was bought by Moreno. When he hits 600 - and he will - it will be a truer LAA milestone.
  25. Trout shouldn't have to steal as much this year with a healthy Pujols behind him. Trout stealing 2nd just opens up 1st for an IBB or pitch around of Albert - he's hot right now so why take the bat out of his hands. Who cares what Trout's SB number is, do what makes sense to win games.
