  1. Quoting from the article: "Just four players hit 500 home runs by 1965, but in the last 15 years, 10 new members joined the 500 club." This dilution is probably the reason AP's upcoming mark is getting less attention - at least at the moment. As for Card's offer - they offered what they could fully knowing if he accepted it would be a big hit to a small/mid-size market team. I believe Mozeliak also knew they'd be potentially hurting the franchise while paying for a declining player - clearly a great declining player - but still declining. Moreno had no such qualms and bought AP, all his future milestones, and his LAA Cap in the HOF. AP got a boatload of money. I guess it worked out for all. I think the interesting aspect is how it will be noted in STL.
  2. The problem with AP in this very small sample size is that he's not even moving guys over. Last year he did. Again, small sample size right now. People need to remember that AP was brought in by the Owner and called a partner (for 20 years) - so for those who can't understand MS reluctance to anger AP then imagine the Owner at your workplace bringing a guy in and calling him partner ... you'd take a chance on pissing him off? The only thing MS can do and possibly get away with it is swap JH and AP and say it's because JH is hot. It might also put back that old AP "chip on the shoulder" and a disrespected AP typically responds.
  3. Scott34 - thanks, I'm really enjoying the work and hoping to present it at a local SABR group meeting soon. Best thing I've ever done during a cold, boring offseason. The last 2 games I scored (61, 62) Aybar is no longer leading off. All I could think was; it's about time. Would love to send a .pdf of my scoring/analysis but not sure to whom. Don't want to hijack or divert the thread so I'm going back to work - game 63.
  4. Thanks for the info and engaging. This is a really good site, seems well moderated. If I have further questions/comments about the Angels as I proceed with my analysis I might pop back in now and then so I hope that's ok and will be received appropriately by the forum.
  5. Youth of Today - Sorry for the confusion. The comparison to Matt Holliday was that here in STL there's a faction of people who undervalue him and constantly want to trade him. When I finished my work for the Cardinals, Holliday turned out to be the biggest contributor (surprised myself) ... in his case due to a mix of power, and a largely unnoticed tendency to take extra bases. As a newbie to this sight, there's a clear tendency of "Trade Trumbo" ... and again - I'm only 60 games into the season - he seems to contribute a lot.
  6. New to this forum - I introduced myself in the Intro thread but quickly: I'm a Cards fan 1st, baseball fan 2nd. I've created my own analysis of the Cards entire season and am doing the same thing for Angels - have only done first 60 games (Jun 5). I am absolutely amazed by how Angels fans on this forum want to trade Trumbo. So I'd like to know: 1. According to my work he's 2nd to Trout in total offensive contribution ... Important - I'm only thru 60 games. Does he decline as 2013 goes on? 2. I'm not using any other numbers but my own (I'm experimenting with my own metrics) but the only fault I can see with him is that maybe he's slow/doesn't take extra bases? My work shows him even lower than Pujols in base running. Either he's going to start falling off precipitously as I make my way thru the Angels 2013 season or he's your version of Matt Holliday ... the guy who contributes a lot more than the standard numbers show and fanbase realizes. I'm really intrigued by this. Thanks.
  7. Hi to all. 1. I'm a Cardinal fan first but Baseball fan second. 2. My day job is financial systems/data analysis. I built a spreadsheet scoring system in early July (when the Cards were playing Angels) that I then used for the entire 2013 season/postseason for the Cards. I think the system does a great job showing "little things" like taking extra bases and advancing runners. 3. The team I decided to analyze during the offseason was the Angels and I'm really glad I did because they've been fascinating - especially in comparison to STL. I'm trying hard to find baseball people to review and critique my system. After the Freese/Bourjos trade I browsed here and it seems like a really good forum plus I'm scoring/analyzing the Angels so it made sense to create an account. I've only scored the first 54 Angels games so far and have some questions/comments. How shall I proceed to get feedback? New thread? Any/all advice is greatly appreciated.
