Maybe. I have been seeing stuff like this being reported in the news on the national level for a long time. Perhaps seeing it in detail makes what goes on constantly seem that much worse. I have two family members in law enforcement, and the majority of these things are committed by drug addicts who need to break into houses in affluent areas so they can grab a bunch of valuables that can be pawned quickly for drug money. In this case, the perp probably thought the house was empty, since you hear that the woman was trying to be quiet so as to not wake up a sleeping child.
