Hearing #Angels owner Arte Moreno really waffling on whether to take payroll past $189-million luxury tax threshold.
Mike DiGiovanna â€@MikeDiGiovanna 13m
The $40 million or so #Angels still owe Josh Hamilton gnawing at Arte Moreno, who would need to incur tax to sign big FA OF.
-
He's mad about having to pay Hamilton. What a joke, how can Eppler do his job if doesn't know what the budget is.
-
I would offer CJ for Panda and the Red Sox pay 8 million every year except this year since they are taking on CJ. His defense stinks but we have a great SS.
-
So the Cardinals sign Leake as reported than who signs Cueto? Skanks or Tigers? I hope not the Angels.
I would do Cueto if his value drops and he's still unsigned in Feb. why not?
-
Dipoto just lost his #2 SP to the Doyers. Nice job Jerry.lol
-
If he was on time, the Angels might be paying Crawford. Be careful what you wish for.Hopefully, be on time.

My CF and RF Primer will be out any moment now (Chuck? ) but here:
They will make every effort possible to sign Jason Heyward and the number will surprise everyone, maybe even me. Talking 10 years, $250MM with an out clause at 5 year mark to align with Trout's controllable seasons.
There is reason to believe in my mind that the Angels line up reasonably well with at least two teams that have a young, frontline starting pitcher where we exchange at least 2-3 Major League players and/or 1-2 Major League-ready prospects (think Kubitza/Cowart) for said frontline starter. I'm speaking in terms of high quantity for one quality player. Some smaller market teams need to fill multiple holes and we do have pieces that could help them.
Feel strongly, as I noted in the Primer, that they will sign Freese to a 3 year contract with 1-2 team options to lower the AAV to help a touch with payroll (it's not much but it is money the Angels need to manage).
It is very possible they sign Chase Utley to man 2B. His defense, even at 37 is above average and I think he still has some gas left in the tank. It is also very possible the Angels acquire Starlin Castro because essentially he has no surplus value with his current contract and the Angels could send a starter or something else to acquire him. I don't think he'll cost as much as some think.
The Hanley Ramirez rumors may not be total smoke. I think there is a remote possibility (maybe 20%) that the Red Sox eat a lot of money and send him our way. Cron might very well be trade bait in that scenario for the frontline starting pitching scenario I spoke about above.
If the Angels sit on their hands I'll be supremely disappointed. It is Arte's money but he's never struck me as someone who holds back when he can improve the team and he'll get it done too. The only logical path is to spend big to improve the team.
Only way Angels can trade for a frontline starter is to sign 2 OFers and trade Kole. The Indians being the team. Won't happen.

Woops, those numbers are apparently wrong.

Sources: Greinke deal is six years, $206M. Deferrals expected.
No state income tax!

Right or wrong, getting outbid for Greinke by small market team is embarrassing. Yikes.

Half of LA can't get the Dodger games on TV because org made bad deal to get most cable money to sign superstars like Greinke. Welp.

It will be interesting to see how much more the Dbacks gave Greinke. It just goes to show you that even the Dodgers have limits as to what they will spend.
I think it goes to show you that there is a LOT of money in MLB, record profits, Tv deals, where even the D-Backs can spend big.

Sources: Greinke in agreement with #DBacks, pending physical.
Wow. Out of nowhere. Lol at the Dodgers
Thats Awesome!
-
"Sources: #Dodgers reaching out today to a number of fallback starters (Cueto, Samardzija, Kazmir) in the event they fail to land Greinke." from Ken Rosenthal
I hope Greinke leaves the Doyers and they sign Kazmir to replace him.
-
Dodgers had two #1s.
Yup, and no bullpen. The Giants had one #1 and a good bullpen and won. KC had a great bullpen and won. Greinke has pitched good in the playoffs, Kershaw hasn't gotten it done.
-
Good, please no $34MM AAV contracts for 32 yo pitchers.
I would bet the Greinke contract will work out better then the Hamilton or the Albert contract. Pitching wins. The Angels either need to get a better bullpen like KC or get a true #1 like the Giants to win and win in Oct.
-
I disagree, the Angels TV deal kicks in this year, the Angels have the money, it's a matter if Arte wants to spend. Lots of big money contracts coming off the books after 2016 and 2017.Greinke pitches once every 4-5 days...the Halos have holes in LF, 3b, and 2b to fill. That 30 million per year for Greinke can be better spent.
-
Why?
Arte hates Grienke.
It was never going to happen.
I don't have that inside info, so I wouldn't know.😜
-
We were never getting Greinke. He's not going to leave the NL.
He will take the best offer, the AL/ NL was over blown. That's why he wanted a answer from the Red Sox and last time the Rangers were in it.
-
I was hoping it was the Angels. That's why he he hasn't signed yet. I guess it's time to lower expectations.
-
The Cards have money from there TV deal, my guess he stays with with them.
- ABC and Second Base

Even if they are "in" they will get out bid. The Doyers, Giants or even the D-Backs will drive up the price for a #3 maybe a #4 stater. Pass.
-
The agent works for the player, Boras was just doing his job.
-
Definitely. He hasn't been any better with the bat than Freese has, but he's a lot younger and better defensively.
Not sure what it would take but he's worth a look.
He's a bad in the clubhouse, theres a reason the A's are dumping him. AA also talked about how great the Jays clubhouse got after that trade, Angels should stay away from him.
Just wondering, was Brent a problem in the club house?

@buck342 As team officials have said and as I mentioned again in the story, the clubhouse in general did not mesh.
-
Brett Lawrie likely to be traded, any interest?
He's a clubhouse cancer, the Angels should stay far away from him.
Interesting SI article on Heyward
