Ohtani and Herget to Atlanta

Travis D’Arnaud, AJ Smith Shawver, Victor Vodnik and Luke Wadell to Angels

In this scenario, the Angels get back a very solid veteran player (D’Arnaud) who can catch/DH and play some first base. Then they get the Braves top prospect in Shawvyer along with a really good relief prospect and Waddell who is profiled to be a decent fielder at 3b along with good contact skills, good obp and a very low strikeout rate. 
 

They could have gotten so much more last year but I would not be upset with a trade like this if they know Ohtani isn’t coming back.

Since the Winter Meetings start today, I thought it would be fun to post our predictions. They can be predictions for any team or just based off the Angels. 

Here are my winter meeting predictions:

Judge signs with a mystery team (Mets, Phillies, Braves, Houston)
Mets sign Verlander
Trea Turner signs with Phillies
Angels trade for Scott Barlow and make a decent trade for a shortstop (Joey Wendle)
Padres sign Syndergaard 
Houston signs Cody Bellinger 
Brandon Nimmo signs with Toronto

And the big surprise is that the Padres trade Tatis Jr to the Baltimore orioles for Gunnar Henderson, Colton Cowser and two pitching prospects. 

Astros owner Jim Crane told Mark Berman of Houston’s Fox 26 on Sunday that the team has reached out to Correa’s agent, Scott Boras, and they were “in discussions.” Those talks, however, seem to be generating little progress. While talks are fluid, and can change with one phone call, some with the Astros are pessimistic about the team’s chances of bringing Correa back.

What are your predictions for the trade deadline? Do the Angels buy, sell or maybe do both? What players do you think they target? 

My prediction is that Perry acquires Jose Berrios and Tyler Duffey from the Twins for a package centered around Marsh and William Holmes.

I have no idea. Just saying that those names from the Padres were based on the Lindor rumor.

If there Padres are offering Patino, Baez and Arias, then there's quite literally nothing the Angels can do to counter that. Patino is better than everyone in the Angels system not named Adell. And just in case the Indians were stupid and we're somehow more intrigued by Rengifo or Sandoval than Patino, adding Baez, who works either in the rotation or relief in the mid to upper-90's is a great equalizer. And Arias, is a solid prospect that will be a major leaguer. 

In order to match that, not exceed it but dimply stay in there conversation, the Angels would need to offer Canning, Sandoval and Jahmai Jones.  That's not a good trade for the Angels to make in their current situation. 

If that's truly what the Padres are offering for Kluber, then they control this market and the Angels are basically at their whim.

Those Padre prospects are for the Lindor rumor.

Joe Maddon has widely been linked to the Angels‘ job and “is set to interview with” the club, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports (subscription required).

Jerry was desperate after losing out on Ohtani last year.

If $10-12 million is really the amount available, then Grandal would be pushing it. I'd sign :

Lucroy for 5-6 million

Tulo for league minimum

Shawn Kelly and Xavier Cedeno for $3-4 million each.

Last, I would trade Bedrosian for whatever we can get.

If we had a little more money to play with than the estimated $10-$12 million:

Grandal for $12-15 million per year 

Cody Allen for $7-8 million

Tony Sipp for $4-5 million

Tulowitzki for league minimum
