this feels like a game that Jose Suarez winds up pitching in.
hopefully it's with a big lead, and not a deficit.

Teams that have a pen full of guys with options would not need 2 guys, because they can bring guys up & down regularly to rest them.
In which case, it’s Perry fault for building an inflexible pen that necessitates two long men and ends up costing them games when long relievers are forced into leverage roles.

Looks like the Angels passed on Soto this time.
(I think they had priority over CIN?)

I’m late to this thread, but this is what I put on Twitter Monday:
During yesterday’s game, Erica Weston said that Schanuel said the key to his success Wednesday was going back to who he is.
It seems like he was trying to be someone he wasn’t, and now he’s going back to the approach he took last year.
It’ll be interesting to see how the next two to three weeks look, assuming he sticks with his old approach.

I would keep Fulmer over Suarez. Suarez has shown himself to have no value. He has no roster flexability for the team or any other team at this point. Fulmer provides roster flexibility and has pitched much better. Should be an easy call.
And Fulmer has shown a willingness to take the ball even with limited rest.

Hard to keep coaches when other teams will pay better. Once again, this is an Arte problem. At one point the Angels had one of the larger analytics departments under Eppler after not having had one at all. But, when things didn't go the way Arte wanted he wasn't allow to grow it and it's been one of the smaller units since.
well, Eppler could've kept Bailey and Ecker by offering them the promotions they were getting in other orgs, but he decided to stick with Callaway/Wise as pitching coach and Reed as hitting coach.
Though, yes, Arte's lack of investment in PD is a factor.

I’ve mentioned it already a few times in this thread. Amir Garrett continues to mow down AAA batters (as he should) idk if he’ll return to his old self once he’s back in the bigs and stink but he’s definitely earned a call up whenever the opportunity arises
he should be up in the majors, with one of Fulmer/Suarez being DFAd.
The team shouldn't be carrying 2 long relievers.

Yea read what I wrote. I said it’s fairly common AND the FIRST one I remember was the Lackey contract.
The way you phrased it below is better, but my point still stands that it's not that common.
4 hours ago, Stradling said:I guess I better phrase would have been it isn’t unheard of to include options like this. Either way it isn’t anything new or it isn’t in the contract because he was damaged goods. Common sense tells you that you aren’t giving $33 million to a guy who you think has an elbow injury.
Common sense tells you the player isn't giving you that contract stipulation unless there is some reason to warrant the clause.

As for the opinion that “the team must have known” or “he was damaged goods” since they added that clause in his contract. It’s fairly common to have these types of stipulations in contracts these days. First contract I remember having an option like that was Lackey’s Boston deal which they also exercised. Actually I think St Louis exercised it after he was traded? I could be mistaken.
You say it’s fairly common, but then go on to cite a nearly 15 year old contract as the example.
I don’t think it’s that common, and the inclusion of the option is a pretty good indicator they knew his health wasn’t 100%.

Placencia starting in Single-A is weird, and I still don’t know why he was demoted.
That can’t be a good sign for his standing in the org.

Looking back 2015 turned out to be a nice little draft!
Yeah, but the credit for that goes to Eppler’s player development staff.
Dipoto was out the door by the time those guys made legitimate changes.
One of the frustrating parts of Eppler’s tenure was he identified good coaches, but couldn’t keep them.
Andrew Bailey and Donnie Ecker are the most prominent.

Washington said Drury would not start at Tropicana Field because of the turf, returning to the lineup on Friday in Cincinnati. Washington said Drury was available to hit, and he would be removed for a pinch-runner if he reached base. …
If a middle infielder got injured, what would be the plan?
Would they just play Drury or would they move Rendon to 2B with Sanó at 3B?

I’m still okay with drafting at #8 someone slotted to go around #15-18,
I’m not. If they want to save some money for a HS pitcher later, as you suggested, then do it with the 2nd round and comp picks.
IMO, there’s a clear cut off in talent after 8-10. So lock in one of those top talents, then you can start playing around with your bonus pool.

Using Estévez there was the right call. He was already getting ready anyway, he hadn’t pitched in a few days, and the other options (Strickland, Cisnero) aren’t the most trustworthy.
If they were in a similar situation tonight, maybe you don’t use him because then he’d be unavailable tomorrow. But you use him then.

I’m sure the MLBPA would love that.

Someone actually did the work, lol:
I wonder how that compares to the league average in those situations.
EDIT: I tried to search, but am unsure what specific criteria were used to look at these situations.
I looked up Trout's stats in the 8th/9th/extras where the tying or winning run was either on-base or Trout himself. My search came up with 399 such PAs.
In those situations, he has an .896 OPS.
Since 2008, the league average OPS in those situations is .690.

This is pretty incredible
Good stuff from VinRBI to compile all that, though I’m not sure I want to watch 24 mins of video presumably filled with plenty of frustration.

I don’t necessarily believe this, but I’m just gonna throw it out there and see what other people think...
Do Canning and Sandoval have mentality problems on the mound? And if so, might that have to do with where they grew up?
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest people in OC have different personalities than, say, people from New York or Boston.
Whenever these two pitch, there doesn’t seem to be a bulldog, fight through it mentality that other pitchers have.
Sandoval leading MLB in unearned runs last year suggests there’s something there.
Is there something here?

I'm gonna read through everything later, but a quick question based upon first glance: why is 45+ FV behind 45 FV and 40+ FV behind 40 FV?

The only thing I can think of is that Washington is on orders from the front office to play Hicks and Sano on the regular in hopes that they're productive and can be flipped at the deadline, at which point they'll have Adell and Moniak in the lineup everyday. I'm not saying it's the best idea, but it could at least be justified if the Angels are entering a rebuild and just inflating value so they could be traded alongside Drury and maybe even Ward.
I think it's the opposite: Washington is under no orders from the front office.
So, as is said below, Washington is playing the "vets" until/unless the youngsters earn his trust.
On 4/7/2024 at 9:27 PM, ThisismineScios said:Ron is managing in reverse--my vets can be trusted, my young guys need to earn playing time. That's what playoff contenders do, hoping to get a spark or catch lightning with a young guy.

considering Baltimore has claimed Soto twice now, it makes you wonder if/what they see in him that they can unlock.

“I’m trying to get them at-bats so they can get going,” Washington said. “The toughest is Adell. He has to come off the bench and pinch hit. He’s doing well with it. That’s a very good learning process for Adell, being able to come off the bench and being able to go out there when you get an opportunity and produce and all it’s going to do is help him as the season progresses.”
noteworthy for the people who are mad about Adell not starting.
Metrics for Success first 20 games

9-11
2 leads blown (and games subsequently lost) in the 7th or latter: 4/5 vs. BOS and 4/16 vs. TB.
6 games where two runs or less are scored.
Stephenson and Silseth hurt, but otherwise OK.
The amount of games where the offense no shows is a problem.
