7-8 innings is now considered a stretch. I remember the days when using 2-3 pitchers was how it was done. A starter, a setup man and a closer. Maybe that concept wouldn’t survive today’s hitting but I miss those days. Guys like Ryan, Valenzuela, Sutton, Messersmith that would always get you to the 8th inning were a true treasure to watch. I get the longevity and injury issues but I think the game has taken a step back in terms of historical value. No hitters by starting pitchers may soon be a thing of the past.

I think a lot of today’s pitching stats are convoluted because of this new opener approach. I personally don’t really know if it’s actually working or not. It’s still a pilot program in my opinion. I’m not opposed to change but I’m concerned about losing traditional things like 20 game winners, no hitters, perfect games, strikeout records, Cy Young’s. But yes, your post does paint a different picture about the Dodgers staff. I’m just a fan of Starters, relievers and closers.
