  1. Funny some of the comments. If we made a swap of 2 marginal players (one of whom may be a reasonable bullpen piece) and received Fletcher and Stassi, who both increase the payroll, this thread would be white hot nuclear. Not unusual, most fans overvalue their own team’s players, especially those that are likeable.
  2. Seems to me this position could be partly used to teach, highlight and implement situational hitting principles and base running strategy. It seems to me that the last couple of years we have left a lot of runs on the table.
  3. Thanks for the Will Wilson callback.
  4. A couple more thoughts on the Eppler/Minasian comparison… 1. It’s still early, but it seems like some of the international prospects that Perry brought on have shown some promise. I feel like Epper whiffed on international guys. I’m sure he won’t be signing players from the Bahamas anymore. 2. If Eppler was still GM, would Marsh have been traded for O’Hoppe? Billy seemed pretty attached to his higher level draftees. And the 1st rounder (I can’t remember his name) that they traded to the Giants was ridiculous. Especially since pitching was a much bigger need than an infielder. Now, Minasian may become enamored with his draftees as well but he seems more calculating than Eppler was.
  5. I always thought Salmon was a guy who did his business. Not the type to display a lot of emotion. It wasn’t until the 2002 WS that I saw he could show some emotion.
  6. And Hunter played for two great coaches. Tom Kelly and Mike Sciocsia. Both were big on fundamentals, playing smart baseball, and holding players accountable. Would definitely choose him and take a chance rather than hiring a retread.
  7. There was a video clip of his last or one of his last times pitching this year. His biggest problem is his delivery which is on the violent side. He (or the Angels) didn’t seem to change anything this year.
  8. Not sure why you are against this. The only criteria that some rely on is former Angels player. A fired 3B coach or former college manager, who both would never be considered by another team, are prime Angel Manager candidates.
  9. Not sure you can say there was no fault on Wise’s part. Sandoval, Dietmers, and Barria regressed, the bullpen decisions didn’t often make sense, and there was little development that I noticed. I mean, did anyone think that Wise earned another year?
  10. The more I think about it, Showalter makes the most sense. He should be a good influence on the younger players and I would assume that he’s got good connections to better hitting and pitching coaches than we’ve had in years past. However, given his age and propensity to get fired, it would also be good to have a younger coach who he can develop to eventually manage the team. I would think he’s mature enough to realize the value of that. If nothing else, he is still very much respected in the game and has shown he can work with younger talent. (I almost typed that he would “groom” a younger coach but in this day and age that would hold an entirely different meaning).
  11. God Bless Turner and the family.
  12. If someone put out the name of a random former head coach of a college team as a viable candidate that person would be shredded on this board. Former Angel should never be a qualifying factor.
  13. Funny, but Minasian is tied with Andrew Friedman at 22nd place. Easy to look in hindsight, but I remember the board was pretty satisfied with the offseason moves. I have to tell you that when I first read your post I thought Minasian was a serial sexual harasser or liked to kick dogs.
  14. Reagins, DiPoto, Eppler, Minasian. All first time GM’s and paid on the cheap. Yes, history has shown that he will definitely go for Epstein and give him an ownership stake.
  15. I was told that Bobby V is very close to Minasian. It actually would have made sense to give him the job for 2023 because, 1) it’s hard to see him being worse than Nevin, and 2) Bobby V is a legend in Japan and, if the Angels were competitive, could have helped to sway Ohtani to staying.
  16. I am very much in the “keep Minasian” camp. It seems to me that Minasian has more influence with Arte than DiPoto or Eppler did. Maybe he’s more aggressive (Eppler always seemed to be a “go along to get along guy). He’s put together a good young core of players to build around. Would like to see him keep that going while going into another draft and waiting for some of the young international players to come up through the system.
  17. There is no winner here. The Angels should have announced some type of diagnosis and prognosis assuming he had a fracture. If Rendon had a fracture, why be a dick and not tell some of the writers. Seems to me he saw that he was getting crap talked by everyone and realized maybe that he had to take some of the pressure off. I can’t see them bringing him back as it seems the Angels and him have relationship issues.
  18. At one time, wasn’t the waiver process a bit more secretive? Didn’t teams put players on waivers all the time just to gauge trade interest and then pull them off if somebody made a claim? Obviously this isn’t what is happening here…
  19. Rendon is the Angels problem. Non Angels players are not affected by it. Astros cheating was everyone’s problem.
  20. That’s fair. It used to be that reporters spent a number of years with the same team. Now they turn over much more frequently so there may not be the level of trust. I would think that Jeff Fletcher has some great relationships with certain players. Sam Blum not so much.
  21. Believe what you want. This wasn’t a stranger by any means.
  22. Yeah, not sure this is going to happen. Major leaguers are like a group of Yentas. They talk among themselves but try to keep it within the circle. Besides, what is the upside of telling?
